millions of people across the country are on the move during the busiest travel period of the year. on the 405 in los angeles it was the mother of all traffic jams tuesday night -- miles and miles of gridlock for drivers who had hoped to beat the rush. on the capital beltway outside washington d-c, traffic was backed up for nearly 10 miles after a crash. most people will drive to their thanksgiving destination: more than 43- million, according to triple aaa. the best way to avoid the worst gridlock: drive on thanksgiving day and head home any day but sunday; saturday or monday are much lig a record number of flyers. 27-million passengers are expected to take to the skies. "for them, it'll be all snow."inside delta airline's command center this week ... the operations team monitors the weather... and every flight in the air. of hope thanksgiving dinner in cedar rapids. it will be served from 11 this morning to two this afternoon. the house is at 17-44 2nd avenue southeast. another large thanksgiving meal in cedar rapids is at first church of the open bible. that at 19-11 "e" avenue northwest. the church says it plans to feed around 200 people from 11 this morning to one this afternoon. organizers ask that you call 319-363-3117 to sign up. runners and walkers are going to burn off calories ahead of their thanksgiving feast today during the annual turkey trot. the five k starts at nine this morning. runners will start in downtown cedar rapids and run along the cedar river. everyone hitting the trail today gets a fleece hoodie and cinnamon roll. some area malls are getting a jump start on black friday shopping today. lindale mall in cedar rapids opens at 6 this evening until one a-m. stores will then reopen at six in the morning tomorrow

is open starting at six tonight until midnight. their black friday hours are also 6 in the morning until nine tomorrow night. kennedy mall in dubuque is opening its doors at 6 tonight until one a-m. customers can come back at six in the morning on black friday and shop until 10. crossroads mall in waterloo will open select stores at six this evening. the mall is open from 6 to 9 tomorrow. two youth groups from different religions are sharing a meal they made together today. muslim youth group wanted to find a way to give back. so they decided to make lunches for people who have to work today. last night, the kids made turkey sandwiches and cut up vegetables. the teens plan to pass out the lunches between 10:30 and one today. they say the best part of the activity was making new friends and understanding other religions. the teens say they hope their new friendships will be a model for adults in the future. hundreds of people celebrated a thanksgiving feast at the salvation army in cedar rapids. volunteers served more than 400 people at yesterday's annual event. many who attended also depend on the salvation army for meal programs and other services during the week. one woman told us she appreciates the extra attention to details at this type of event. " oh the holiday meal, they have come us come and sit down and people wait on the salvation army in johnson county also hosted a holiday meal yesterday evening. nearly a year ago, a hit and run accident in ames killed an iowa state student from eastern iowa. now the city has fired the bus driver who hit the woman and didn't report it. benjamin clague was on paid administrative leave

more than 28 thousand dollars during that time. clague also served 30 days in jail after pleading guilty to failure to report an accident. he was driving a cyride bus that hit emmalee jacobs in the morning of december 14th last year. she later died from her injuries. jacobs was 18 and from urbana. ames says cyride drivers are city employees. the city says it kept clague on the payroll during the period of time when he had a right to appeal. dubuque officials say a new hampshire man is at the clinics after a truck hit him. authorities say 44-year- old jeremey maus was walking through a cross walk at 17th and white street tuesday evening. that's when 22-year-old uriah van ostrand hit him with his truck. he faces charges this morning. officials say maus was seriously hurt, but didn't give us an update on his condition. des moines police say they've brought in mental health professionals and chaplains after a gunman killed two officers earlier this month.

moines police sergeant tony beminio died three weeks ago. the des moines police chief says he's still processing what happened that day. he says the department's offering the resources because many officers are grieving, yet still doing their regular jobs each day. "we also had a large group of people who didn't have a choice - that we sent to meet with our staff psychologist because this isn't normal. normal people don't see these things. and these people had very intricate roles in this tragedy, were looking out for their needs as well. " des moines police will send two officers to san antonio for the funeral of another police officer who was recently killed there. they say it may seem like a small gesture. but it's one they'll never take for granted after the support they've received over the past few weeks. president-elect donald trump says he hopes the thanksgiving holiday will help the country move forward. this comes as he selects the
