steady rain will be with us this evening as a warm front lifts north through eastern iowa. after midnight, the rain will turn more to scattered showers. winds will be gusty through tonight at 20- 30 mph. with the strong southerly flow, we will stay mild tonight, only dropping into the 40s for overnight lows. similar conditions will continue for monday, another mild day is on tap. there will be a chance for a few showers as well as the cold front sweeps i over for the rest of the week, however, the system that brought us this rain will stall out to our north, keeping us in a very cloudy pattern. temperatures will fall back to near normal levels for wednesday through next weekend. tonight: rain likely and windy. winds: s 20-35 mph low: 46 alo: 46 dbq: 43 iow: 46 43 to 49

have begun in cuba to honor the death of fidel castro. the 90-year-old leader ruled his country with an iron hand for sixty years. the cuban flag flies at half-staff in havana. students attending the university of havana, where their education is free, held a candle light vigil this evening, chanting "long live fidel!" one student saying he owes the revolutionary leader everything. that's when the squad car was hit from behind by another vehicle. authorities pronounced the two people in that vehicle dead at the scene. police blocked southbound traffic for several hours. the landscape around the muscatine county courthouse will change when nine large ash trees are removed because of damage caused by the emerald ash borer. the muscatine journal reports county officials decided to remove the trees after they were inspected by an expert because they could be a safety hazard. county budget worse than officials realized. the canadian pacific holiday train is making four stops in northeast iowa this week. the train will stop in bellevue and dubuque on saturday... and in guttenberg and marquette on sunday. performers include musicians kelly prescott and colin james. the train follows a different schedule every year. visitors are encouraged to bring a donation to their local food banks.

sanctuary will be sticking around. the czech musicians. last night, some of them returned the favor with a benefit concert. final totals aren't for sure yet-- but officials think they raised between 600 and one thousand dollars. that'll help keep the facility open in the coming months. it had been struggling with high overhead costs. add to that the flood, which forced the sanctuary to remove its recording studio. none of the equipment was damaged but the group lost money while closed. officials said the future looked bleak.
