meals delivered to homebound seniors. it also offers meals at dining sites across the seven-county region heritage serves. last year, that totaled more than 320-thousand meals for seniors in need. statewide, about 72,000 seniors don't know when or where they'll get their next meal. 67% of those getting a meal from heritage are at or below the federal poverty level. it's donations and telethons like this that fight the the program's funding comes from donations. but over the last ten years, those donations have dropped more than 237,000 dollars. federal funding has also been inconsistent. here is how you can help today. call our phone bank here. 319-399-6000. a volunteer can take your donation over the phone. you can also donate online. head to kcrg.com and you'll find a link right on the home page to donate online. you can also sign-up to

you can contact heritage agency at 319- 398-5559 this morning, some people in grundy and butler counties are picking up after tornadoes caused minor damage. tornadoes are rare this time of the year, but not unheard of. in the coming days, the national weather service will be on the ground surveying the damage. they'll look into this reported tornado, which someone spotted near grundy center just before four o'clock yesterday afternoon. as kcrg t-v nine's jordee kalk learned, there w parkersburg. cleanup in parkersburg is expected to continue later today. most of the damage is where i am here on the northeast side of town. the city says the home that had the most damage is along orchid drive. i spoke to the homeowner there and she says she's missing a few shingles off the roof of her home but nothing too severe. she just tells me she's glad both she and her husband are safe she also says this storm is less severe than the storm in 2008. again there were no injuries in this storm.

a knoxville man is facing felony charges this morning after he threatened to shoot police ofce charged with threats of terrorism. knoxville police say briggs made the threats when officers were booking him into the marion county jail friday. that's after he punched an officer who tried to arrest him for traffic violations. court documents show briggs said he was going to shoot officers similarly to the attack 4 weeks ago that killed two des moines area police officers. "you make that statement to a police officer in iowa right now, they are going to take you seriously, and you are going to end up in jail. there is no questions about it. we have had

" briggs is in the marion county jail today. knoxville police say they have informed nearby law enforcement agencies about his threats. the first of 3 finalists for university of northern iowa president is coming to cedar falls today. he left his last university abruptly... neil theobald will visit the u-n-i campus today to meet with faculty, staff, studet at temple university planned to dismiss theobald as the school's president after a "no" confidence vote. he resigned a few days later. people can attend a public forum for him today from 2:30 to 3:45 at u-n-i's maucker union. the state regents plan to choose a finalist from the three candidates next week. some students have a knack for telling creative stories. ryan adams, a senior from independence, has lots of stories to tell based on his long list of activities. but

stories with video. here is our kcrg-tv9 student of the month, presented by hills bank and trust. nats assembling the camera 18-year-old ryan adams knows how to do a little bit of everything. "i wasn't familiar with the cameras at all until last year..." he takes the initiative to learn new things, which is why ryan does so much. "there's so many great people in every department and activity i'm involved in. but music is something i've really become passionate about." ryan is a leader on his school's drumline. he's also a singer, active in musical theatre and plays local gigs with his own rock band. "music has been able to give me emotion that words can't. and that's something really powerful." in addition to the arts, he's a decorated athlete - qualifying for state in track and cross country.

got his eye on the future, focusing on film making projects. "right now, i'm working with the basketball team, with the wrestling team on making videos for their pre-season hype up." talking with coach "for him to come in as an intership student and kind of hone his skills and see how he can put technology into athletics is kind of a nice challenge for him." i'll have you look right here "i really believe that there is so much to learn out there. and that motivates me to want to come into class and be abl "he's about as far as most college students would be in terms of working on the job and doing things that most adults are able to do at a high school level. " whether it's running for a medal or putting together a video project - ryan will continue to set high goals for his future. you can also sign-up to volunteer. you'll also find a link for that on kcrg dot-com. we'll be back with more on how you can fill the plate. stay with tv9. it's ---. food insecurity and the need for good nutrition programs for an aging population is a concern anywhere in eastern iowa. but those who serve rural populations often face extra hurdles. kcrg tv nine's dave franzman looks at what it takes to run a meals program in north english. this small kitchen at the north english community center fills a big need both here and in the nearby communities of south english, millersburg, parnell and williamsburg. sot/nat just three full time workers produce more than 10-thousand meals a year for an aging population. in this part of iowa and keokuk counties, there are few public transportation options and not much of a safety net of other services for seniors. so a program like this in a small community is often call on to do more. " they can go from being well fed to not doing well at all in

the small staff and a handful of volunteers often take time to visit and get to know the homebound or shut-in clients. almost 90 percent receiving the meals live alone. if those doing deliveries see something that doesn't look right, they'll say something. "so we know to call their family...to say they're not looking right, not acting right you might want to consider calling or stopping by to check on them and it's something we enjoy doing we're glad to do it easing the burdens of the family and the client" jeri pierce isg as delivering daily meals. after two strokes, at age 59, she's basically homebound and has no family nearby. "they call me every day. call me at 8:00 o'clock in the morning. " " in a small rural community like this, a food crisis can come up very suddenly perhaps in unexpected ways. for instance, the only grocery store in north english closed for six months earlier this year before reopening with new owners. so if you're an elderly person

many clients unable to drive, the north english center prepared extra meals for months to make sure clients had access to food for both breakfast and lunch. even with that crisis over now, staff and volunteers still drive clients to appointments like doctor's visits or shopping trips. in a small rural area like north english, a meals program
