the mayor of gatlinburg says officials are discussing the possibility of re-opening the town on friday. officials say they believe a person caused the fire. they say seven people have died. the fire has destroyed or damaged more than 700 buildings. thousands have been evacuated since monday. many say their family members are still missing. "i've called the other shelters here, they said she isn't there...just hoping for a miracle." " better weather yesterday allowed search and rescue crews to go to homes, looking for those who may still be trapped. president obama is offering support for the people the wildfires has affected. in a statement yesterday, the white house says fema approved a grant earlier this week to help mobilize emergency resources. friends and family are raising money for the man a cedar rapids police officer shot earlier this month. they held a benefit for jerime mitchell.

over mitchell for a traffic stop near coe college. police say the two men got into some kind of altercation. officer jones fired his gun, seriously wounding mitchell, who was still inside his car. those close to mitchell say the shooting paralyzed him. a grand jury will determine whether officer jones will face charges. mitchell says he's incredibly thankful for the support he's received in a video call, he praised the nearly 300 people who showed up to the fundraiser. the group was so large, it pushed the capacity limits for the event space. mitchell's loved ones up. money raised at the benefit will help to pay them. organizers collected donations and held a silent auction for those who showed up. mitchell's brother says the evening all about support. "00:02-14"we never wanted it to ever be about black vs white or anything like that. really, it's just about people being good people and supporting each other. if you look around, it's everybody in that room. it's all walks of life."" a go fund me page created after

dollars. this morning, police in cedar rapids are encouraging people to come out an meet with them... over coffee. during coffee with a cop, everyone is invited to come and talk about issues and build relationships in a neutral space. police say the goal is to have people ask questions, offer their concerns, and get to know police officers. the coffee with a cop event will be at hy-vee, 1843 johnson avenue nw it will be from 10 this morning to noon. the funeral for a university officer killed the service for wayne state university officer collin rose will be at st. joan of arc catholic church in detroit this morning. a visitation was held last night, drawing officers from across michigan and elsewhere. rose was shot last week as he tried to arrest deangelo davis. davis faces murder and gun charges. a officer that worked with rose says he wonderful to work with. "i was a mediator with collin.. at 36th district court and he kinda of really touched my life.

president says a $25,000 endowed scholarship is being created in rose's name. amid the city of cedar rapids' need for a quick response over the flooding of september, city leaders will talk about what did go right leading up to the flood. the city and the economic alliance will talk about ways they have adapted and improved flood preparation and recovery efforts. it's the first of a series exploring disaster preparation. this morning's session is from 8:30 to 10. everyone is welcome to o street se. boarded up windows are giving customers of a cedar rapids restaurant the wrong idea. the owner of little bohemia in the newbo district says the plywood boards over a front door and main windows have given people the impression he closed. he's actually installing period glass and doors to restore the original look of the building. he planned to do it during the down time while cleaning up after basement flood damage.

flag out front, the sign out front but we can't put any lights out because...we have no windows." melsha says he's open afternoons and evenings tuesday through saturday. he'll reopen with lunch hours as soon as the glass and door are finished and that could happen in a day or two. nearly 50 shops in oelwein are working together this holiday season to bring more shoppers downtown. last year, the oelwein chamber started a marketing campaign called "shop oelwein" to highlight the shops that make up this downtown in fayette county chamber said she expected about 10 shops to join in. instead, 49 businesses decided to pool their money together for the marketing campaign. 8 this friday night. you can see a full list of these events under this story on kcrg.com a doctor lost his license for running a cash-only pill mill and prescribing addictive pain killers in 11 states, including iowa. the state of illinois took away dr. paul madison's license yesterday. according to documents from illinois, he prescribed one-point-six million doses of controlled substances from last year to this year. michigan barred him from practicing refusing to fill madison's prescriptions because the amount was so high. he is illinois' top prescriber of a fentanyl spray called subsys . the associated press reached out to madison for comment, but he has not responded. biotechology companies in eastern iowa are hoping to show off all the progress they've made in recent years. and they plan to do that with tours of different companies. the first one of those events was yesterday. dozens of people stopped at places like cargill and dupont in cedar

spotlight tour also went to the state hygenics lab in coralville. there, experts talked about advancements in biotech industries. the iowa biotechnolog y association says the tour does more than just help people learn. "we want some relationships ya know. we host this as a networking form to a degree and if people cn do some business with one another then that's a good takeaway we want people to have as well." the biotech association plans to have more events like this in the future. winter equipment is sitting on store shelves in eastern iowa longer than normal. retailers are among the people hoping for some significant snowfall. but britley, it doesn't look like that will be in the next few days? welcome to the first day of

are still waiting for snow. only five percent of the state has recorded measurable snow so far. so businesses that sell snowblowers, shovels, and other winter items haven't seen a lot of sales activity yet. retailers say many people may not buy equipment at all this winter if we go through december without a significant snowfall. at the sled shed in cedar rapids, owners ordered the about same amount of merchandise as last year. and people are dipping into some of that stock pile, b to pick them up until the snow starts to fall. " we've got a lot of people kicking tires...a lot of them set up they aren't even picking them up yet. what they do is call us and tell us they want them, they want their preseason promo price, yet they're not going to pick them up for a couple of weeks. " sled shed said one difference this year was how long fall lasted. until a week or so ago, the repair shop was still fixing lawnmowers and leaf blowers. now that's changed, with about 200 snowblowers in now for preseason

animal health officials in sweden report culling two hundred thousand laying hens.. some nations like hong kong and the ukraine have launched bans on poultry and its products from some of the affected nations. ---- there might still be life in the trans-pacific partnership trade deal.. despite president- elect donald trump's intent to withdraw.. american farm bureau trade adviser dave salmonsen.. says the 12 nation deal could be resurrected if trump eases up.. because there's a precident for saving flawed trade deals.. he say than bilateral deals.. and the bigger question is if t-p-p partners like japan wil even renegotiate.. "do you walk away from the whole exercise, which took place over these many years? or will these countries, knowing now the potential is to not move ahead at all in the u-s be more willing to revisit certain areas?" officials from japan are still determined to save the trans pacific partnership.. they hope trump can still be persuaded to back off from his opposition.. they are

trade protectionism. . ---- there's a rebound in the livestock markets.. but that's not carrying into the grains.. market analyst john heinberg with stewart-peterson has more.. "we've had a pretty volatile week here as we get to the end of the month, i think that's some of it, we've had some position squaring, bean market obviously, we've had a strong push in that bean market." "just seeing some pullback here in that regard. typically this time of year, we've seen a little bit of a maybe walk back, especially since we've had a bit of a run. just kind of working ourselves sideways. st today, pretty rough day yesterday, did hold trend line support this morning as well so corn futures kind of hanging in there." "i'm cautious here historically we see a little bit of a walk back in the first part of december wouldn't surprise me if we see as this market's kind of overbought i think that's some of the reason why we're not really stretching today. but on top of that too though, retail values have firmed up again this week, we're a little more positive at midday today as well, so that gives the packers a little bit more money

together today for a candlelight vigil. 21-year-old martrell watson and his passenger, 22-year-old kaitlyn hall, died in the crash this past weekend. tonight's vigil is for watson and his family. it will start at 7 at 1119 3rd street sw in cedar rapids. watson leaves behind a 5-year-old daughter. kaitlyn hall's mother says watson and hall were also expecting a child together. cedar rapids police say the watson was driving an s- u-vwh rail on the s curve early saturday morning. the vehicle then rammed into the back of a police s- u-v. watson's family says they'll decide on his funeral services at a later date. an urbandale christmas tree has special meaning for police officers. the tree inside the urbandale police department honors the five iowa officers killed in the line of duty over the past year. blue, black and silver ornaments are next to badge numbers. tara mcfarling, the

a child. prosecutors say 46-year- old king received and distributed a sexually explicit image of a 15 year old in 2014. two people face charges this morning for a pipeline protest in des moines. the des moines register says jessica reznicek and travis o'brennan face a trespassing charge. police say they refused to leave the iowa utility board building yesterday morning. that board gave dakota access permission to build the bakken oil pipeline through iowa. the protesters demanded a meeting with board members to possible violations of construction permits. "none of us want to do this but this is apparently what we have to go through just to have a meeting with publicly appointed officials. " the spokesperson for the board says they're in the middle of a lawsuit over the pipeline. he says that's why they won't address the protesters face to face. "the board issued their final decision and order on this case back in march and that's being litigated, so we can't

quesions by the end of the day, but protesters still want a face-to-face meeting. both of the protesters arrested were fasting and holding signs in front of the i-u-b offices for the last ten days. today people around the country and in eastern iowa will mark the 28th annual world aids day. the goal is to make people more aware about preventing h-i-v and aids, as well as the advancements in treatment options. health officials say more than 2,000 iowans are infected with h-i-v. today, university of iowa students will read aloud name o this is video from a past reading of the names event. the johnson county public health department is also offering free h-i-v testing today. that's from 8:30 a-m to 3:30 p-m at the iowa city public library. tonight, a dubuque school committee will talk about using a controversial book in future curriculum. some parents have an issue with the book "the perks of being a wallflower". it's required reading for students at hempstead high school. the parents say the book's "graphic sex scenes" and depictions of drugs and alcohol

them. since the last meeting, the committee has read the book to better judge its educational value. tonight's open discussion starts at 5:30 at the forum. that's on 23-hundred chaney road. a program that provides high-school students with real-world experiences wants to double its reach with a new school in marion. iowa big made that announcement last night at its open house in cedar rapids. the new location will be in partnership with linn-mar schools. and it's made possible, in part, because of a $1 million dollar grant. that grant came the x-q- the super school different type of learning. school leaders are now working to find a location for the new school. interim u-n-i president james wohlpart and former temple university president neil theobald. the iowa regents plan to select one of them for the job next week. eastern iowa is seeing a growth in urgent care centers. that's part of a national trend according to the american academy of urgent care medicine. a new urgent care center opened in cedar falls yesterday. and another will start serving patients next week in dubuque. they are part of the 50 to 100 urgent care clinics that open each year in the u-s. u-s since 2008. the center say the goal is to give more people an alternative to going to the emergency room. but they say that - even after opening the first urgent care clinic earlier this year - the same number of patients are still going to the e-r. the hospital says more patients want urgent care because it's faster. when unity point finley opened this urgent care clinic back in august, they did not see a drop in the number of patients visiting the e-r. "what we believe is happening is patients who've had to go outside our local community to

companies and banks were not enough to make up for losses in the broader market. after a mandatory review, the e-p-a has decided automakers can meet the fuel economy and emissions standards established in 2012. the auto industry launched a major lobbying effort to try and relax those standards. new cars are required to average 54-point-5

since buying habits have changed. when the standards were set, gas was three dollars and sixty cents a gallon and small cars and hybrids were popular. now gas is averaging two dollars a gallon and three of every five vehicles sold in the u-s are trucks and s-u-vs. gas prices could soon start going up. opec has agreed to cut its oil output for the first time since 2008. the reduction puts opec's barrels. non-open countries are expected to cut an additional 600,000 barrels a day. the cuts will result in higher oil prices in the short term. payroll processor a- d-p reports u-s companies added 216-thousand jobs in november. that's the most since june. the increases all happened in service sectors like retail, hotels, and restaurants construction firms added two-thousand jobs while manufacturing lost ten- thousand. netflix subscribers will now be
