then, at an event, like tonight's, the group hands over the keys catching the recipient totally by surprise. nat stunned silence. that's how this single parent of two reacted when he found out the car behind him was now his. "what was the first thing that went through your head when they said your name?""thank god. this is something you definitely need. going without it has been a struggl that struggle for two years, ever since thieves stole his truck and insurance wouldn't cover a replacement. he and his family have had to make do, relying heavily on public transit. not ideal. "you simply cannot get to all the places you want to get to in a day. it takes an hour to go this way. two hours to go that way." millions of low-income americans face the same challenge. according to 2012 u-s labor data, transportatio n is the

costs. two years later, a report found those in poverty were three times as likely to use public transit as those with higher income. "a while back, we thought this program up in a matter of about three weeks." troy benham with marion tire thought up the car giveaway one night while lying in bed. a half decade later, miles of smiles has helped as many families in as many years get on the road in their own vehicle. it's completely free. registration, taxes, evn been taken care of. plus, there's a trunk full of food, to boot. "there's no words. to be able to get around the way we're going to be able to get around compared to what we have been going through you can't measure it." another thing you can't measure? andrew's appreciation. again this couldn't have happened without the salvation army and all of the donors who helped purchase and fix the car up. miles of smiles will return again next year. bruce?

pick-up crashed through the front doors of the walmart in pella. and the state patrol believes it was an accident. the truck smashed through some displays inside the store. two of the three people who died worked there. the crash also hospitalized the driver and one other person. the state patrol has not released any of the victims' names. after the crash, police employee, who was not working at the time, described the scene. "i just heard a loud crash, you know, and a loud banging noise, i knew something was amiss, i looked up and i saw several people running in that direction." " a pickup running through a walmart. i know they're all designed differently, but there's a lot of stuff up front.

reformed church in pella held a prayer service for the dead and the injured from that the crash. the linn county attorney says a county supervisor has chosen to, in his words, "politicize our legal process of justice." jerry vander sanden made those comments after supervisor stacey walker called for a special prosecutor to handle a grand jury review of a police shooting that seriously wounded a man. statement today that said one of his duties is to attend the grand jury and give it legal advice. his satement said, "i fully intend to discharge this responsibility in a professional, conscientious and ethical manner." the seven member grand jury is reviewing the november first shooting of jerime mitchell. cedar rapids police officer lucas jones wounded him during an altercation after a traffic stop near coe college. the shooting paralyzed

he's currently in rehab. it looks like iowa city's new police chief will be coming from altoona. the city manager has recommended that the city council approve jody matherly to head the police department. he's been the altoona police chief since 2012. he was previously the chief in grinnell. he's also worked for police departments in michigan. after a discussion lasting nearly three hours, a dubuque school committee decided to take no action on a book that some people want the district to ban. being a wallflower" will continue to be assigned reading for a literature class at hempstead high school. more than a hundred people packed the room where the committee held a lengthy discussion about the book tonight. some parents had complained about the book containing sex scenes and depictions of drug and alcohol use. tonight, the committee heard from some of those parents. but most speakers supported the book. force the highland school district to close an elementary school in washington county. right now, ainsworth elementary has about 70 students from pre- kindergarten through fifth grade. it's part of the highland district, which serves the ainsworth and riverside communities. but kcrg t-v nine's jordee kalk reports the future of the ainsworth school is uncertain. there are fewer elementary aged students in this small town, and that has the district ainsworth's lone school. mark thompson/par ent 26:41, "pretty unfortunate if they have to close... we don't want that at all."the district says nothing is finalized. school leaders have to determine the cost per student... and how closing a school may save money for the district. for many ainsworth parents the process can be frustrating. mark: 26:45, 'it would be nice to see everyone get along.. this school year, the district says it was forced to cut $500,000 from its annual budget, because of a lack of state funding. in 2015, the district asked
