fast moving flames reached her home lyle wood/ mother was killed in wildfire: "things went from the winds picking up to the last phone call she made to my brother was the fact that she was really scared and frantic because the house was actually on fire at that point. rescue crews have been working around the clock, putting out brush fires and searching for survivors, some even refusing to sleep at home. a photo posted on facebook by the johnson city professional firefighters association shows five firefighters asleep on the sidewalk after return 700 buildings are destroyed or damaged, and 14,000 people were evacuated monday. many with just the clothes on their backs. as residents return to the burned areas, many will find they have nothing to come back to. country superstar dolly parton, who grew up in the area, plans on doing something about that. dolly parton, entertainer: "we want to provide a hand up to all those families that have lost everything in the fires. and to recover, we want to make sure that the dollywood foundation provides a thousand dollars a month to all those families who have lost their homes in the fires until they get back up on their feet. i'm dianne gallagher,

despite dropping temperatures and snow in north dakota, protesters against the dakota access pipeline refuse to leave their camp. earlier this week, the state's governor ordered an evacuation of the protest camp. many thought the state would force demonstrator s out. but the governor yesterday said that's something he doesn't plan to do. protesters say the order is a way to block that's not true either, and he's mainly concerned with safety. "we may not be able to help you in an emergency situation. your health and safety may very well be at risk. " "the governor issued his with threats of cutting off our food supplies. we responded by saying that is an act of war " area law enforcement think some people have left the camp. but they don't have an estimate on how many

ballots in wisconsin this morning. green party candidate jill stein requested the recount. she's also paying for the $3.5 million dollar tab. county election officials across wisconsin have hired temporary workers and expanded hours to recount nearly 3 million ballots. "well, we've got the recount underway and we've got different stations set up. actually right now they're all physically counting the ballots. we've reconciled poll lists for municipalities and we have reconciled absentees for all the five we have on the docket today " stein is suing for a recount in michigan and pennsylvania as well president-elect donald trump has filed an objection to the vote recount in michigan. michigan's elections board will consider his request to block a hand recount this morning. trump says the recount should be stopped because as a 4th-place finisher in the state, any alleged fraud or mistake didn't "aggrieve" jill stein. stein responded calling

ninety thousand dollars for six new homes. that's the major donation for cedar valley habitat for humanity today. wells fargo is donating the money as part of a six million dollar effort. the dedication ceremony is at four this afternoon. anyone is welcome to attend at 12-58 20th avenue southwest in cedar rapids. the company says it's to help stabilize communities. earlier this year, cedar valley habitat for humanity partnered with habitat and home builders. together, they built three homes in five days. as shopping malls across the country look for ways to keep people coming in, a dubuque mall offers a new and different option. the vertical jump park opened yesterday at dubuque's kennedy mall. it's filling space after several stores called it quits and left behind empty room. parents say they love the convenience of being able to drop off the kids while they shop. "i still want stores here. it is the mall. but it's something to do. while i shop, he could play. "

mall last year, after sears moved out. transportation is the second highest household expense for americans. that's according to 2012 u-s labor data. and - a lot of times - buying a car isn't feasible for families. that's why andrew schmidt now has a new car without it costing him a dime. last night, the salvation army and several other sponsors presented a chrysler van to him as part of a program called "miles for smiles". schmidt says someone stole his truck and insurance wouldn't cover a replace they've had to rely on public transportatio n for a while. "it means everything to me, you have no idea what it is like to try to do the simple things. to go get groceries to get to all of the places i've had to get to just to keep our family going on our day to day basis. " the car is completely free. the program covered costs for registration, taxes, and insurance for a year. also, miles for smiles loaded

castro's younger brother raul has served as president. 120 workers at transamerica in cedar rapids will soon be without a job. the insurance and investment company is laying off about 800 people nationwide. transamerica will also close two offices in california and one in ohio during the next year. the company says the cuts are part of a larger plan to adapt to an "increasingly competitive environment". it says it's helping the laid off workers find new jobs. the linn county attorney says a county words, "politicize our legal process of justice." jerry vander sanden made those comments after supervisor stacey walker called for a special prosecutor to handle a grand jury review of a police shooting that seriously hurt a man. vander sanden released a statement yesterday saying one of his duties is to attend the grand jury and give it legal advice. his statement said, "i fully intend to discharge this responsibility in a professional, conscientious

reviewing the november 1st shooting of jerime mitchell. cedar rapids police officer lucas jones wounded him during an altercation after a traffic stop near coe college. those close to mitchell say the shooting paralyzed him from the neck down. iowa city is considering a new police chief from altoona. the city manager has recommended the city council approve jody matherly to head the police department. he's been the altoona police chief since 2012 and was previously the chief in grinnell. matherly also worked for police departments in michigan. "short" of passing a bond issue months ago. now the district is back, asking for voters to pass it. the bond issue needs a 60% super majority to pass. last april, it came up short by just 14 votes out of more than 800 ballots. the district is offering basically the same plan to voters on tuesday. the money would pay for a new gym and elementary school classrooms. homeowners with a $100,000 dollar home would pay

until 8 p-m on tuesday for the vote. an alternative is now available for some dubuque students who don't want to read a controversial book. a dubuque school committee has decided to keep "the perks of being a wallflower" as part of the curriculum for a literature class at hempstead high school. they say the teacher can provide an alternative book if students or their parents request it. more than a hundred people packed the room where the committee held a nearly three hour discussion about the book last night. some parents had complained about the book containing sex scenes and depictions o committee heard from some of those parents. but most speakers supported the book. an annual effort to feed the hungry during the holidays is starting in johnson county. the crisis center of johnson county and the university of iowa community credit union are working to fill the food bank. each year the program collects money to buy meals for people around christmas time. the opening event is today at 9:30 at the food bank. this is video of last year's event. u-i-c-c-u is matching every donation to the food bank

rammed his truck through the front entrance of a pella walmart. officials are waiting to release his name and the names of the three people killed in the crash. they do say they think it was an two of the three people who died were walmart employees. that's according to one of their co-workers. the crash also sent the driver and one other person to the hospital. after the crash, police evacuated the store. two employees say this is something they never could have imagined. " about 150 people came out for a prayer service for those killed and hurt last night. in a tv-9 follow-up this morning.. a former cedar rapids school bus attendant will spend 11 years in federal prison. 20 year old tyler konigsmark was sentenced for enticement of minors. he admitted he had sex with an underage girl earlier this a request sexually explicit images from 3 girls. a former clarke university basketball coach now working in des moines faces an o-w-i charge this morning. 32-year-old justin einerson is now the head boys coach at lincoln high school in des moines. police pulled him over sunday morning after someone reported a reckless driver. his preliminary breath-test was a point 3- 3-2. that is four times the legal limit. "when you get up into these astronomically high numbers you obviously can't exercise

be impaired as far as operating any equipment including a vehicle and you can't do any of those things safely for yourself or someone else " einerson spent three seasons as an assistant men's basketball coach at clarke, leaving the school in 2011. the des moines school district says he is allowed to continue coaching. but einerson can't transport any students. ainsworth elementary school in washington county may have to shut down. and school district say that's largely due to a lack of funding. right now, ainsworth eleme students from pre-k through 5th grade. it's part of the highland district, which serves ainsworth and riverside. this school year, the highland school district says it was forced to cut $500,000 from its annual budget. that's because of a lack of state funding. in 2015, the district asked voters for money to build a new elementary school to replace old school buildings in ainsworth and riverside. the school district says a combined staff and a more energy - efficient building would have saved the district $250,000 a year. so the

4th and 5th graders had to combine at ainsworth elementary school.
