hi, it's a friday night here in japan, welcome to this hour's "newsline," i'm james tengan in tokyo. coming up in the few minutes will be the latest in sumo with ross mihara. first, the main news at this hour. u.s. federal bureau of investigation acts made an arrest in a high-profile cyber crime. the suspect is accused of gaining access to computers at an american subsidiary of sony corporation. investigators say he's part of an international hacking group. fbi agents arrested 23 -year-old arizona resident cody kretsinger

on thursday. kretsinger is charged with hacking into computers at sony pictures entertainment in june. the fbi says he's a member of lulz, the group which claimed involvement in the cyber attack. more than 37,000 customers of sony pictures had their private information stolen. authorities say kretsinger downloaded the data and gave it to other members of lulz. sony company faced a series of cyber attacked since april. in once case hackers stole the information of 77 million online users from the firm's playstation division. friday is a symbolic day for the palestinians. they fought for decades to have their fractured territory called a country. now their leader is going to make a request for the united nations to grant palestine statehood. president mahmoud abbas is expected to submit a formal

application for u.n. membership on friday to secretary-general ban ki-moon. he's then scheduled to make a speech before the general assembly to call for international support. israel expressed criticism of the move saying it could destroy past agreements made in middle east peace talks. u.s. president barack obama expressed opposition when he met with president abbas on wednesday in new york. he said the framework of mideast peace talks could collapse. u.s. secretary of state hillary clinton is focusing on the future. >> regardless of what happens tomorrow in the united nations, we remain focused on the day after. we will leave, know, no effort or stone unturned in our commitment to the achieving that. >> the u.s. is continuing its efforts to dissuade the palestinians from applying for u.n. membership. people around the world are

keeping their eyes on the sky in the coming hours. pieces of a u.s. satellite are expected to fall to earth sometime on friday. and just as old space hardware is returning to this planet, some new equipment is going up. the japanese government successfully launched and information gathering satellite on friday using the company's mainstay h2a rocket it took off in southwestern japan. the satellite is equipped with a high resolution camera that can detect objects on earth as small as 60 centimeters in size. its main purpose, gathering information related to national security. japan now has three information gathering satellites orbiting earth. the new satellite will replace one that is nearing the end of its life. g20 finance ministers are working today for the stability of global income markets.

they met with central bank governors releasing a statement saying they're committed to making a strong and coordinated international response to address the challenges facing the global economy. french finance minister francois baron pledge ed the world's major economies would get through the difficulties together, even though some may think it's impossible. >> the finance minister says japan is ready to consider buying more bailout bonds to help europe deal with its fiscal crisis.

day 13 of a grand sumo tournament is considering moving day, because we find out just who are the contenders and pretenders for the title. kitotaike enjoying his best basho with ten victories but gets his stiffest test against homasho. homasho wins the initial face-off. kitataiki prefers to got his best inside grip. this turns into a grappling battle. back and forth they go. no question who's controlling the flow of this match. it's whom show, he finishes off kitataiki. the lower stability of gagamaru.

has dramatically improved, along with his record. since he's in second place on the leaderboard, he gets sekiwake kisenosato as his poentd. the georgian puts his 28 kilogram weight advantage to work, but with upper rancors, he can't overcome size. sure enough, kisenosato establishes a grip, despite gagamaru's roly-poly upper body. he dispatches the heaviest man in the division with a force-out. hakuho was last seen grabbing his right elbow and losing on the previous day, which puts him in a bind, because kotoshogiku comes highly motivated. kotoshogiku has just two wins in 28 previous meetings with the yokozuna. but with his incentives, as well as hakuho's subpar condition, this is a one sided match. a force-out for kotoshogiku, he gets an important 11th victory. so he needs just one more for his milestone promotion.

so moving day has unexpectedly tightened up the race. hakuho and kotoshogiku tied. for the lead, heading into the second-to-last day. one step behind, are the trio of kisenosato, gagamaru and kitataiki. the two co-leaders will face ozeki looking to spoil the fun on day 14. hakuho steps up against baruto, and kotoshogiku takes on harumafuji it should be an exciting final weekend at the september tourney. ross mihara with the latest in sumo. up next, the extended world weather forecast.

industries corporation in aichi prefecture. it was unveiled to the media on thursday. the vehicle runs on power generated by inflating compressed air by a tank installed in the trunk. toyota industries plans to ask guinness world records to recognize the speed of 129.2 kilometers per hour recorded by the car on september 9th as a record for an air-powered vehicle. one of the designers says they do not intend to put the car into practical use but want to use their expertise in car design. >> translator: the car offers many exciting things that are different from other types of vehicles. >> personally, i think they should put that technology into practical use. that wraps up this hour's "newsline." thanks for watching.

kenkichi drives to work with his wife. his workshop is located in a quiet residential area, a way off from central kyoto. this is the only karakami shop left in japan that still adheres to traditional methods. every morning the first thing kenkichi does is to head for the room where 650 woodblocks are stored, a legacy that goes back nearly 400 years. >> translator: these woodblocks

are the most essential tools for karakami-making. each successive master inherits them and continues to use them. >> most karakami patterns are inspired by nature. edazakara, or cherry blossoms in full bloom on branchs is one of kenkichi's favorite blocks. first to prepare is powdered mica, which gives it a glittering effect. water is added to dissolve the powder. all they use in traditional karakami-making are natural ingredients.

only the three primary colors of red, yellow, and blue are used for karakami. by subtly varying the way the three colors are mixed, every single color found in nature can be recreated. because only three colors are used, every resulting hue remains crisp, he says. he never measures the ingredients, but he ends up with the same exact color every single time. call it mastery. in the end, seaweed-based starch is added. it works as a fixative, fixing the pigment on the paper.

then the pigment is spread on a cotton cloth, which is stretched over a wooden flame and applied evenly to the woodblock. then guided by the sensation on the palm of his hand, he gently transfers the pigment to the paper. checking how the color turns out, he represents the same procedure over and over.

just as his predecessors have for the last 400 years. >> translator: it's hardly visible, but it glitters at certain angles. this ambiguity and modesty appeal to the aesthetics of the japanese people. >> at first glance, it seems as though nothing were painted on the paper. however, once light falls on it at a certain angle, numerous cherry blossoms emerge. it never looks the same twice -- typical kenkichi style. one example of how kenkichi's karakami is used can be seen here.

transferred to paper using the palm of your hand gently in a straight forward manner. i would like people to experience how comfortable it is to be in a room surrounded by the curvy shapes and warm colors of karakami. two coffees and one egg on toast, please. >> for the last four decades, kenkichi has been a regular customer at this cafe. this is a rare moment when he forgets about his work and relaxes.

>> yogen-in temple in the center of the city is a historic temple, closely associated with the shogunate. here one of the most famous artists in the edo era has been preserved on the fusuma, or japanese sliding doors. the paper on the back side of these sliding doors is the karakami that one of kenkichi's ancestors made about 400 years ago. >> translator: shading is so crucial to karakami.

it's so modest that this karakami changes its expression ever so slightly with such subtle variation. i'm glad i'm seeing it again. i think i'm going to try something based on this. >> kenkichi and his son-in-law have visited this temple many times to repair this karakami. they're here today to see how it looks by candlelight. the pattern has faded on this karakami after 400 years. it makes you wonder how it glittered in the old days.
