5:41 pm
they are training for the return of women's keirin races next year. the 35 women in this class came from all over japan. this woman used to be an olympic speed skater. >> translator: the track is the same length as for skating, but it's going to be a brand new experience. >> this tall slim woman used to be a model. >> i used to be a mascot girl at the keirin tracks. i loved the idea that i can race on the power of my own legs. >> no, this woman here is 49 years old. she was an elementary school teacher. >> this is a once in a lifetime experience. i've lucked out twice as far as work is concerned. >> a petite young lady is coming here.

5:43 pm
classes are taught seven hours a day. students tackle many subjects from strength training to bicycle maintenance. look, it's miki, the lady who showed us a picture of her baby earlier. using a step ladder, she reaches up. a racing bicycle weighs only 7 kilograms, half the weight of a regular bicycle. right now everybody is training on the rollers where they pedal the bike on top of metal tubes. the tire is only two centimeters wide. it must be difficult to balance on it. miki has never been on an ultralight keirin racing bicycle before. is she going to be okay? she can hardly pedal, even with help. wow. look how fast this lady is pedaling. no wonder she already races in world competitions.

5:47 pm
do i have to devote every bit of myself to my family? these thoughts would pop up in my mind. >> when eiichiro was 8 months old miki snapped and confronted her husband with her feelings. >> i was tired, so i was lying down on this sofa. the tv was going on in the background. my wife was getting milk for our son. she must have been bottling up her frustrations. she threw eiichiro at me and told me to take care of him! those were difficult times for us. what helped miki was getting back on a bicycle again.
5:48 pm
the exhilaration of speed and the wind in her face. miki was able to forget her child-rearing troubles whenever she was on her bike. last year miki learned that the racing school was learning for new students. thinking she had nothing to lose, she convinced her husband to let her apply. and she was selected right away, although it would mean living away from her family, she wanted to give it her best shot. >> i'm inconveniencing my family, especially my husband and my son. i realize this was a selfish decision, so i'm all the more determined to do well, to make up for the trouble i'm causing them.

5:50 pm
she came in 24th. the gap between the best cyclists and miki is still pretty big. >> i'm more than ten seconds slower than the top cyclist. 11 seconds, to be exact. she's so fast. >> 11 seconds is the time it takes to cycle 200 meters. based on the results of the time trials, the class was divided into three groups. the top four cyclists got to wear rainbow patterned helmets. the next group or "a" class was given white helmets. the last group, the "b" class had the red helmets. unfortunately, miki was in the red helmet group.
5:51 pm
>> good morning. >> in order to improve her performance, miki started working out on her own every morning. >> i'm doing this because i don't want to waste a single minute of my time away from eiichiro. >> miki is small. she's only 151 centimeters tall. she's working hard to build up her muscles. the final dash to the finish line is all important. they train for speed using the

5:57 pm
>> it's difficult. >> miki immediately went to see a doctor at a university hospital. fortunately, it wasn't serious. but the doctor told her that she must not ride a bicycle until the pain went away. it's been two weeks since miki injured herself. she trains with exercises that don't stress her legs. it's almost the start of the school's summer holiday. miki was really looking forward to this day. >> it feels like parents day at school. only it's the other way around.
5:58 pm
>> grandma and eiichiro came to pick up miki so they can spend vacation together. >> mommy! >> these cute. where did you get it? >> that man gave it to me. >> he did? >> eiichiro had grown taller and was talking a lot more. >> did you cut your hair? >> at the barber shop. >> at the barber shop? wow. you look cool. oh, i think he's grown up. i noticed the other day when we i noticed the other day when we talked on the phone that he's
