welcome to "newsline." i'm keiko kitagawa in tokyo with the latest at this hour. u.s. president barack obama has urged european leaders to inject call into weak banks. he said they need to act quickly to solve the debt crisis. obama said leaders must make difficult decisions to steer the eurozone away from difficult crisis. >> the bottom line is the solutions to the problems are hard, but there are solutions. the decisions required are tough, but europe has the capacity to make them. >> obama said european leaders must strengthen the banking system to reassure the public just as u.s. leaders did in 2009 and 2010. >> we know that there are

specific steps they can take right now to prevent the situation there from getting worse. in the short term, they have to stabilize their financial system. and part of that is taking clear action as soon as possible to inject capital into weak banks. >> obama said a recession in europe could drag down u.s. exports. he said he would take measures to strengthen the u.s. economy against shocks from europe. obama, again, called for the opposition republican party to back the legislation including the support for small and medium-sized companies. obama also addressed leaks about u.s. security operations. the president says his government will conduct a thorough investigation. the "new york times" last week reported details of a secret u.s./israeli cyber warfare program. it said the president ordered sophisticated cyber attacks on computers at nuclear facilities in iran. obama said such reports make his

job tougher. he also said covert operatives may now be in danger and he has zero tolerance for leaks. >> we have mechanisms in place where if we can root out folks who have leaked, they will suffer consequences. in some cases, it's criminal. these are criminal acts when they release information like this. and we will conduct thorough investigations as we have in the past. >> obama denied a republican senator's accusation that his administration deliberately leaked the information to boost his chances of re-election in november. iran's foreign minister ali akbar salihid has criticized western leaders for not talking ahead of negotiations on iran's nuclear program. he says the iranians want to state their position.

>> our demand is for the other side to recognize our rights fully. because we have the right to enrichment. we have the right to the utilization of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes. >> leaders from iran and six western nations are due to talk in moscow later this month. salehi said the western leaders had agreed to hold preliminary discussions and are not responding to iranian calls to meet. u.s. and european leaders have been pressing the iranians to stop their uranium enrichment. they're threatening to impose economic sanctions that will harm iran's oil exports. iranian leaders and officials from the international atomic energy agency have failed to agree on inspections of nuclear facilities. iaea deputy director general herman nackerts held eight hours of fruitless negotiations on

friday. >> there has been no progress. and iran raised issues we have already discussed and other new ones. implementation is -- >> iaea officials suspect the iranians are refusing to allow inspections because they're trying to clean up nuclear material ahet a military site. a u.s. diplomat says north korean leaders have shown no sign of being ready to talk since u.s. officials canceled food aid. u.s. officials 240,000 tons of

food to north korea in february. in return the north koreans promised to stop enriching uranium and not test ballistic missiles. the north koreans launched what they called a rocket carrying a satellite in april. u.s. officials said the launch was actually a missile test and they canceled the food aid. robert king is the u.s. envoy on north korean human rights issues. he says north korean leaders have shown no sign of being ready to make concessions. >> at this point there is no indication the north koreans, at least we haven't seen any solid indication yet that north kor n koreans are ready to reengage. >> king also highlighted the scale of north korea's food shortage. >> average production in north korea is probably 20% below what the needs of the population are. >> king said u.s. leaders won't consider food aid again unless the north koreans show progress on the nuclear issue.

japan's scandal tainted o olympus has come up with a plan to rebuild itself. the optical equipment maker posted a net loss of more than $610 million in fiscal 2011 through march after it tried to cover up huge losses over the years. >> translator: we will cut 2,700 jobs at the end of march 2014. that's 7% of our worldwide workforce. >> olympus president said the company will strengthen its endoscope and other medical equipmt businesses to improve its profit performance. he said the goal is to increase its sales by more than 30% over the next 5 years. he added that olympus is currently talking with fuji film holdings, sony and panasonic about possible capital and other tie-ups. a nepolese man is back with

his family after 15 years in a japanese prison. he expected to spend the rest of his life behind bars. judges at the tokyo high court granted him a retrial in light of new evidence. prasad mainali was convicted of robbing and murdering a woman in an apartment in tokyo in 1997. the supreme court finalized the verdict in 2003 and gave him a life sentence. however, the high court granted him a retrial. it said a new dna test shows there's a possibility that someone other than mainali killed the woman. the 45-year-old father reunited with his wife and two daughters who were visiting swra p ining immigration facility in yokohama on friday. procedures have been started to deport him to nepal because he did not have a proper visa when he was arrested 15 years ago. his family says they're asking the nepolese embassy for help so
