sharif's league is leading, securing 125 of the 342 seats. en the party had 91 seats before the vote. sharif declared victory in front of supporters. he expressed hope ha the party will win enough seats to form a government without coalition partners. the pakistan movement for justice has secured 34 seats. the party's led by former cricket star. the pakistan people's party has won 32 seats, down from the preelection 134. the party was in power for five years. pakistan has had a long relationship with the united states. the election may change this and affect antiterror operations. sharif was a known critic of

pakistan cooperation with the united states against islamic militants. pakistan has suffered from terror attacks. but sharif is critical of the u.s. use of drones against islamic militants in northwestern pakistan. he says such attacks are a violation of his country's sovereignty. instead, sharif has been stressing the importance of die hog with the militants rather than coercion through military might. the u.s. is worried that a sharif administration might not be cooperative in operations against terrorists.

a coal mine explosion in china's inland sichuan province has killed 28 workers. the explosion rocked the mine in lieu sou. 28 were killed and others injured. rescue operations continuing into late at night with many injured being brought through a hospital. residents of sichuan province have marked the fifth anniversary of a major

earthquake. they gathered to mourn their loved ones. a magnitude 8 earthquake hit in may 2008 leaving people dead and missing. about 300 people, including local government officials in one town offered their condolences. authorities have left the area as it was after the earthquake struck. government officials say the reconstruction work is nearly complete. but some of the survivors are still living in temporary housing. they have to put up with daily invaenss. many farmers who lost their land in the quake cannot find new jobs. officials of india's government say india and china are now negotiating a mechanism to avoid clashes in disputed border areas. it was spurred by an indian claim that dozens of chinese

soldiers crossed over to the indian side of the cashmere region starting on april 15th. india's minister just returned from china. he told reporters on saturday that china proposed the plan a few weeks ago. >> chinese side had given us a border cooperation agreement some weeks ago, which essentially consolidates and brings together many of the agreements and protocols and arrangements and mechanisms that we have in place. >> a three week standoff ended on may 5th as both sides agreed to withdraw troops from the region. they recently strengthened their market ties, but the dispute over borders has overshadowed relations. chinese premier will visit later

this month. u.s. auto firm chrysler says it's recalling about 470,000 jeep suvs due to defects found in the car's electrical system. it effects model years 2005 to 2010 and jeep commanders of 2006 through 2010. the vehicles were sold both in north america and overseas. the defect can cause a vehicle to shift into neutral without warning. the auto maker says the problem has led to 26 accidents and two

injuries. more than 140,000 of the recalled vehicles were sold outside of north america. u.s. financial company bloomberg says his clients were viewing clients' log-in material. the company distributes information to market participants and corporate clients through its terminals. they have been allowing access to clients' log-in information for a number of years. but it restricted such access after a client complaint. the company maintains that its reporters viewed no sensitive information such as the stories the clients read or messages sent, but it has not disclosed what information they did look at. bloomberg's ceo apologized by saying the client had accessed limited client information but this was a mistake. u.s. media say they are

investigating what information was accessed by bloomberg reporters. analysts expect japan's gross domestic product to rise. they estimate that the figures for the first quarter's real gdp growth to be released on thursday will be in positive territory. their estimates range from 0 .6 to 0 point 8%. the companies say rising share prices improve personal confidence and boosts consumption which result in the majority of japan's gdp. the weaker jene yen pushed up exports. the first quarter gdp figures will likely be seen as an indication of the effectiveness of the government's new economic

policies. the quarter covers the period after shinzo abe came to power in december. the tokyo international conference on african development will begin june 1st in yokohama. it plans to support the continent's antiterror the measures. leaders of about 50 african countries and representatives of international organizations will attend the meeting. japanese prime minister shinzo abe also plans to take part in a meeting between african leaders and the japan business federation. japan is going to draw up plans to support antiterror measures in africa. in january, islam mililtant attacked a plant and took dozens of hostages.

>> reporter: some doctors hope that this site will lead to more medical advances. this professor of osaka university is a leading researchers in the field of corneal regeneration. he was the first surgeon any where to successfully regenerate a cornea with a culture of cells from the patient's mouth. it might eventually replace the conventional corneal graft. that is set with a host of problems. but before the new technique can be used widely, it must be tested on more patients to ensure it is effective. this means telling the patients the technique is still experimental. then they decide whether they want to proceed.

it's not really a fast moving system, moving at the speed of 12 kilometers per hour. so by the time it reaches the coastal areas it will probably be later in this week. we do really need to look at the progress, even though it looks like it will be weakening to a deep depression already bringing stormy conditions to the islands, but this is going to be dropping significant amounts of rainfall to where we've already seen persistent rain, soaked land across these areas, especially we're worried about the refugees in myanmar. they're living in tents. and with this sort of amounts of rainfall falling to that area, widespread flooding and life threatening danger is going to be in store. it looks like it will be moving towards cal cut at that for the time being. we will take a close eye at this system. now over east continental asia we have a high pressure system dominating japan for now.

but this system will be covering this area bringing stormy conditions. and we're looking at hail gusts as well as sudden bursts of showers. rain will be heavy in the okinawaen islands. dry across the korean peninsula as well as the northern areas of china. but south we're looking at another system pulling in. generally speaking it's going to be a light rain for today. but into tomorrow, the rain's going to get heavy. and due to the saturated land, any additional rainfall could trigger some mud slides, landslides as well as flooding. beijing, 20. it's warm across these areas. and tokyo looking at 25 degrees. now over towards north america we did have stormy conditions across the eastern half, finally pulling away but leaving snow in the eastern canadian areas. and as this cold front passes

through your area, temperatures will be significantly dropping. so do be prepared for that. across the west, temperatures are climbing. we'll show you the digits later on. but some areas are going to be seeing the warmest day this far. some thunderstorms are across the pacific northwest. temperatures in vancouver and seattle in the mid teens. denver, 29 degrees, oklahoma 3. and pwinnipeg 26 degrees. gusty here across the brit ierk isles. and down towards the south the central areas will see thunderstorms and the baltics and the eastern areas of europe will be battered with thunderstorms yet again with gusty conditions. temperatures in ron done on the

we'd like to remind you of our lead story this hour. turkish authorities have detained nine turkish citizens in connection with two car bombings on saturday near the country's border with syria. deputy prm told reporters that the nine detained were linked to the syrian intelligence agency. the car bombings occurred at the border town, leaving 46 people dead and over 150 injured. the town is an important shipment hub for material being sent to the syrian opposition who are fighting president bashar al-assad's forces. syrian information minister rejected the allegation saying that no one has the right to wrongly accuse the syrian government. tension is rising between the two nations with turkey
