east china seas. those are the senkaku islands which are controlled by japan. an opinion poll suggests more than half of americans have a positive view of china. the research from gallup roared the poll. 55% of respondents said they sigh china as a friend or ally of the united states. 40% said they see china as unfriendly or as an enemy. the poll shows younger americans and supporters of the democratic party are most likely to see china as a friend. 72% of responsiblents aged 18 to 29 said china is an ally. so did 65% of democrats. still poll figures on american views of china have changed little over the past ten years.

u.s. labor department officials have issued a report that paints a picture of moderate recovery in the employment situation. their figures show employers were still adding jobs last month while unemployment just inched up. employers add the 175,000 nonfarm jobs. analysts had expected 160,000. firms created jobs in retailing and auto services. other firms in the manufacturing sector cut jobs. the unemployment rate rose a tenth of a point in april to 7.6%. that's its first rise in four months. analysts are watching u.s. employment data to get an idea whether policymakers at federal reserve will continue monetary easing. fed chairman bernanke said they might scale down their monetary

easing moves if the jobs showed improvement. fed policy makers will discuss their monetary measures later this month. the jobs report pushed up u.s. stock prices. the dow jones rose more than 200 points. the dow surged and closed at 15,248. that's a rise of 1.3%. analysts say the jobs data suggest the economy is not recovering strongly enough for fed officials to scale down their monday tarry easing. investors bought a wide range of issues on the assumption they will keep up their stimulusive or thes for the time being. meanwhile, the dollar continued fluctuating against the yen. it fell to a two month low of 94.8 yen just after the release of the jobs report. it strengthened to the mid-97 yen level as share prices rose

in new york. so what do the jobs data mean for fed policy? we asked a chief u.s. economist, lewis alexander. >> i think the fed has made it pretty clear that it is likely to take the step of reducing the pace of it's set purchases, relatively soon. but i don't think that means the next meeting. i actually don't think these numbers were strong enough to support that. i think as you look out though to the end of september, i think that is more likely. frankly, we do think the economy is improving. and we do think you're going to get a better outlook for the labor market, and i think that will lead the fed to take that initial decision. the volatility we've seen over the last couple of weeks, i think, is related to what the fed is doing, and i think there is the potential for more volatility. having said that, i think the market is pretty much adjusted
