welcome to "newsline." i'm gene otani in tokyo. here's a look at some of the stories we're following this hour. protesters demanding the resignation of egypt's leader keep up the pressure and hold their ground near the presidential palace. >> foreign ministers from japan and south korea meet for the first time in nearly a year as differences over territory and history weigh on relations. >> european leaders are

demanding answers from the united states after reports american agents spied on their allies around the world. anti-government protesters in egypt are digging in their heels. they're staying in the streets to demand the resignation of their first democratically elected president mohamed morsi. the demonstrations are the largest since 2011 when public pressure forced out morsi's predecessor, hosni mubarak. about a million people poured into the streets of cairo and other cities. morsi's opponents say the economy and security situation had worsened during his term, which began a year ago on sunday. some demonstrators in the egyptian capital stormed the head office of the muslim brotherhood, the islamist president's party. morsi supporters in the building opened fire. state-run television is reporting that violence since sunday has killed at least 14 people. protesters surrounding the presidential palace say they're not going anywhere.

they're telling morsi to step down by tuesday 5:00 p.m. >> translator: we gave an official notice demanding morsi resign by tomorrow. we will continue rallies until he steps down. >> morsi supporters have been occupying a road about three kilometers from the presidential palace. they're vowing to use force if demonstrators try to storm the building. >> translator: morsi was elected. and the only way to force him to step down is through an election. we will protect the president morsi with our lives. >> government officials are calling for talks to end the turmoil. the presidential spokesperson says morsi is open to dialogue with the various political parties and national powers. brazilians are struggling with conflicting emotions. some aren't backing down in their fight to get their government to spend more on public services and less on international sporting events.

and others are taking time to celebrate the result of one of those events. brazil beat spain to win soccer's confederations cup. striker scored two goals for brazil and forward namar added another. he was selected as man of the match. this is the third time in a row the brazilian team has won the confederations cup. outside the stadium about 5,000 anti-government demonstrators held a rally. protesters have spent the past few weeks calling on the government to spend more on welfare and education and less on the 2014 world cup and the 2016 olympics. >> translator: our country is going to change. it is not the right time to enjoy soccer games. >> shortly before the confederations cup final began, police fought and officers fired teargas and rubber bullets to

disperse the crowds. the top diplomats from japan and south korea have held talks on the sidelines of an asean meeting in brunei. relations between tokyo and seoul remain strained over a territorial dispute and other issu issues. >> reporter: japan and south korea are important partners that share fundamental values. >> translator: the administration of president park geun-hye wants to work closely with japan to maintain bilateral ties. >> the 30-minute meeting was the first between foreign ministers since japanese prime minister abe and south korean president park geun-hye took place. relations soured over historical issues. japan and south korea are also

at odds over islets in the sea of japan. south korea controls them but japan claims them as part of its territory. in april foreign minister canceled his trip to tokyo after the japanese president visited the shrine. the shrine honors japan's war dead including leaders convicted of war crimes. during the meeting on monday south korean's foreign minister urged to handle pertaining to history with utmost care. his japanese counterpart showed how views the situation. he hopes south korean government will better understand japan's position. foreign ministers from southeast asia and other regional powers are gathering in brunei to discuss one of the most pressing security issues, the south china sea. countries from the association of southeast asian nations are trying to show unity in their negotiations with china. the united states is also present as it takes a bigger interest in the asia-pacific region. dhra dhirakaosal reports from brunei. >> hello from brunei.

the latest series of meetings kicked off here on saturday. the climax will be the forum that brings the foreign ministers of china and the united states together with their counterparts from southeast asia. u.s. secretary of state john kerry met with asean member nations on monday. this is kerry's first asean meeting since he took the job earlier this year. he said the united states hopes that efforts to maintain peace in the south china sea will keep moving forward. >> we very much hope to see progress soon on a substantiative code of conduct in order to help ensure stability in this vital region. >> asean has been calling on china to sign up to a legally binding code of conduct to resolve maritime disputes peacefully. on sunday before kerry arrived in the region, china tried to secure some early diplomatic victories with asean. they agreed to hold high-level

talks in september to discuss the code of conduct. but differences remain over what issues should be covered by the code. some asean members are skeptical that negotiations will drag on while china's presence in the region continues to grow. china has become more assertive in its disputes with several southeast asian neighbors over ownership of the par sol islands in the south china sea. china, the philippines, vietnam, malaysia and brunei as well as taiwan all claim sovereignty over the separapratlys and beli to have abundance of oil and natural gas. china claims sovereignty over this entire area. disrupting fishing boats and maritime traffic. nhk world's correspondent in

hanoi reports on how vietnam is responding. >> reporter: china's ships and helicopters have chased more than 20 vietnamese fishing boats since the start of the year. in march a vietnamese boat was left ablaze after receiving fire from a chinese warship near the island. the boat's captain was this man. >> translator: a chinese warship approached us and opened fire. part of the cabin was set alight. we battled the fire and extinguished it. >> reporter: some strevietnames fishermen have had enough. they are moving to waters away from the islands. >> translator: i no longer make

as much money as i used to. i can't make a living. >> reporter: the vietnamese government is responding to chinese aggression by modernizing its navy. prime minister visited russia in may and inspected submarines vietnam has agreed to purchase. he also gave encouragement to vietnamese military personnel receiving training from russia. >> translator: all of you have responsibilities that need to be fulfilled. the vietnamese people have great confidence in you. >> reporter: vietnam is purchasing six russian submarines. two of them have already been completed and will be delivered by the year end. in late may he told a regional security conference in singapore that small incidents could flare up and trigger a much wider

conflict. >> translator: a single irresponsible action or instigation of conflict could interrupt trade and lead to unforeseen consequences not only for regional economies but also the entire world. i urge you to join hands and take concrete actions to build trust and create an era of peace, cooperation and prosperity in the asia pacific region. >> reporter: china is too rich and powerful for vietnam to resist on its own. it's cooperating with other asean nations as well as large powers including russia, the united states and japan. hoping that together they can send a clear message to china. nhk world, hanoi. >> we're joined now by nhk world reporters based in southeast asia, mark ho. good evening, mark. asean and china have been discussing the code of conduct for years with little progress.

is anything different this time? >> sources close to asean stresses the group at least publicly showed a united front this time. at the foreign ministers meeting last year, delegates failed to adopt a joint statement for the first time in the group's history. the philippines and vietnam and other countries in dispute with china were at odds with cambodia which considered its strong economic ties with china. this year they avoided looking divided by differences remain. on sunday the philippines issued a statement. >> now talks on code of conduct have been scheduled for september. can we expect any progress? >> we shouldn't be overly optimistic. china is strengthening its claims apparently taking advantage of the fragile unit of asean. a number of asean members are

already down playing the so-called official talks as merely an extension of discussions that have already taken place. the parties have agreed that a group of experts will be set up to assist discussions. that's something the philippines, vietnam and others had opposed saying it only allows china to buy time. at first glance the agreement seems like a compromise, but a closer look suggests many of china's demands have been included. behind all this is the reality that fast growing asean economies have to rely on massive investments from china. asean and china have agreed in brunei have agreed so both sides can co-exist in peace and prosperity. as long as asean continues to rely on china for massive economic investment, china will have leverage to further increase its maritime activity in the south china sea. >> thank you, mark. and that was nhk world's mark

ho. and delegate discussions about the south china sea will continue at the asean regional forum on tuesday. observers will also be looking for any developments regarding another regional security issue, north korea's nuclear program. the north has started to signal it might be willing to resume stalled six-party talks on the nuclear issue. china and the united states are two of the key nations involved in that issue. and their foreign ministers are both here. we'll be looking out for any signs of a breakthrough. i'm dhra dhirakaosal reporting from brunei. china's foreign minister used the asean meeting to give his north korean counterpart another nudge. wang yi worked towards resumings sigs-party talks. the negotiations have been on hold since 2008. wang says china is continuing to

make efforts to denuclearize the peninsula. start the process of resuming negotiations. it's not known how pak responded. they are willing to accept any form of negotiations, japanese and american diplomats say they won't resume the six-party talks until authorities in pyongyang take concrete action to abandon their nuclear program. u.s. government officials are facing more tough questions about their intelligence-gathering programs. the latest reports based on revelations by former national security agency contractor edward snowden say american agents spied on embassies and missions around the world. the targets included allies such as european nations. japan and south korea.

nhk world's reports. >> reporter: the german magazine "der spiegel" reported that works at the national security agency installed listening devices in eu offices in washington and new york. they say agents eavesdropped on meetings among eu officials. they cited a leaked document by snowden. it says nsa workers also hacked into computer networks to intercept documents and e-mails. eu leaders responded with strong words. >> i am shocked in case that it is true, i feel treated as a european and a representative of an european institution like the representative of an enemy. >> reporter: the report also describes a u.s. spying program in germany. it says the operation is as comprehensive as the ones in china and iraq. u.s. agents monitored about 500 million phone calls and e-mails every month.

german prosecutors have launched an investigation. the document leaked by snowden also points to spying on other u.s. allies. a report in the british newspaper "the guardian" said the u.s. had surveillance systems in 38 embassies and diplomatic offices in washington and new york. that includes france, mexico, south korea and japan. japan's chief cabinet secretary said his government will ask the u.s. to confirm whether the report is true or not. >> translator: we are not sure about the alleged reports. we would like to seek information through diplomatic channels. >> reporter: u.s. intelligence officials released a statement saying they will respond to the complaints from eu politicians through appropriate diplomatic channels.

they say u.s. security agencies go about collecting information just like other nations do. one person who has come out in support of snowden is the founder of wikileaks. julian assange calls the whistleblower a hero. >> there is no stopping the publishing process at this stage. great care has been taken to make sure that mr. snowden can't be pressured by any state. >> reporter: snowden is believed to be in the transit area of the moscow airport. his whereabouts have not been confirmed, but his revelations are affecting diplomacy around the world. chiaki ichikawa, nhk world. a fast-moving wildfire in the u.s. state of arizona has killed some of the people who are trained to put it out. authorities say 19 firefighters are dead. the fire started on friday in

the community of yarnell. by sunday, teams have recovered the bodies of the firefighters. >> hotshot crew, people who literally go out on the fire line and attack these with tools and other implements. these are the core of firefighting, right there in the middle of the incident. >> dry, hot conditions and high winds have caused the fires to spread out of control. arizona officials say the flames have already burned their way through about 800 hectares of land. some residents are facing evacuation advisories. several hundred firefighters are still working around the clock to put out the fires. nelson mandela is in critical condition in the hospital struggling with a lounge infection and other ailments. people have packed churches across the country to pray for the 94-year-old. about 300 gathered in a church

in johannsberg where ant anti-apartheid activists would meet. the priest said gave hope for the nation. >> he's done enough for the country. he's done enough for all of us. so we wish him rest from all the pain, all the suffering. >> crowds continue to maintain a vigil outside the hospital in pretoria where doctors are treating mandela. musicians and singers have joined to keep spirits high. the secretary-general of u.n. is urging countries around the world to intensify their efforts to reduce poverty and protect the environment. ban ki-moon says progress has been made in reaching the millennium development goals, but he notes much remains to be done ahead of the 2015 deadline. u.n. staff put out an interim

report on what's been accomplished so far. they say the goal of cutting worldwide poverty in half has been reached. 22% of the global population lived in absolute poverty in 2010. in 1990, 47% got by on less than $1.25 a day. the report goes on to say targets for reducing the number of people suffering from hunger and infectious disease will likely be reached. but it notes less progress has been made on environmental protection. it says greenhouse gas emissions have grown by 46% since 1990. the secretary-general notes there are fewer than 1,000 days left before the millennium development goal's deadline. executives in japan say the future is looking bright. a key gauge of business sentiment has returned to the positive column for the first time in seven quarters. officials say the weaker yen is one of the main reasons.

the bank of japan has released its quarterly tankan survey of short-term business confidence. about 10,000 companies took part. business sentiment among major manufacturers stood at plus four points, that's up 12 points from the previous survey and marks a rise for the second straight quarter. a positive reading means a larger percentage of firms think business is good rather than bad. business is improving for a broad range of exporters including automakers and electronic appliance and industry industrial machinery makers. a weaker yen and pickup in overseas economies are giving them a boost. the outlook was equally positive among major nonmanufacturers. the sentiment index stood at plus 12 up six points from the previous survey. builders and real estate firms are enjoying solid business on a rise in public housing market growth. smaller manufactures sentiment rose for the first time in six quarters, but the reading of minus 14 remains well below that for major firms. the tankan includes a sub index

showing how managers see conditions three months from now. the reading is at plus ten points. it continues to lag for smaller makers at minus 7 points. optimism is spreading among major businesses in japan, but it's a different story in china. business sentiment at chinese manufacturers worsened in june from the previous month. that's fueling concerns over the outlook for the world's second largest economy. china's national bureau of statistics said the official purchasing managers index stood at 50.1 last month. that's just over the 50-point mark indicating growth, but the index fell 0.07 in may. tumbled 1.4 points month on month indicating slow economic activity. the declines come on the back of a sluggish global economy, export growth is also losing steam due to the yuan strength

against other major currencies. tropical storm rumbia is hovering over the south china sea. meteorologist robert speta is here with more on that. robert. >> we are continuing to watch this storm impacted the philippines over the weekend. and some grave news coming out of this area, actually a boat overturned, upwards of seven deaths, many of them children due to this tropical storm. also tornado into kaesong caused some injuries out here. just due to the system that pushed overhead. now conditions are improving behind it. you're going to see rough weather in hay non. gusting up to 126 miles per hour, actually winds gusting up to 80 miles per hour there into the hong kong area away from the center of circulation.

but really the worst of the weather and also the high waves are going to be out here about four meters high going into tuesday morning as the system starts to push ashore. it's not just winds and waves, we're seeing heavy rainfall. in some areas about 100 to 200 millimeters expected going through tuesday, but the good news is that this is going to be cut off from its moisture source. and as it does so it is really going to rapidly weaken after moving on shore. there's still going to be a risk of flash flooding through midweek. continue to keep an eye oint. farther off to the north, northeastern china, look at this low pressure area pushing through. this has been lingering still bringing heavy rainfall. about 200 millimeters expected in some areas out here, also some gusty winds really going to be bringing even some hail with it. so some damaging weather. but look at that trough extending off of this low pressure area extends towards central china. this is a site of where on sunday we saw some pretty severe weather.

show you video out of sichuan province. rose the water level about 1.5 meters within a very short time here. local firefighters were out there rescuing about 250 people. you can see a small landslide here. some pretty rough weather there in to central china. this is not tropical-related either. it's just part of these low pressure areas that push across here. the same one likely going to push off there through wednesday into japan. but for now looks like some fair weather's going to be in the forecast throughout the day on tuesday. don't be surprised to see a few afternoon thunderstorms pop up especially into the tohoku region. temperatures climbing into the high 20s. chongqing, cloudy skies, 36 expected here for you. hong kong even though that storm system is off towards the west, you're still climbing up into the 30s. take a look over towards the americas where really the rough weather is being reserved here towards the east and out in the west it is hot and dry.

let's talk about this first. that low pressure area continuing to linger along this dip in the jet stream. you see that frontal area. that's going to bring some continuous rain showers out here up to about 150 millimeters expected. risk of some flooding even down towards the south and the base of that jet stream actually into portions of cuba. we saw about 140 millimeters just due to the moisture inflow continuing to push off towards the north. that's going to be popping up these thunderstorms. into the southwest though we have these dry thunderstorms that are in place. those are igniting fires out here. and those storms that do end up having the rainfall hit the ground especially in the burnt areas, that is very prone to flash flooding. i know that's very contradictory, you have the fires but also cause flash flooding. watch out for that. and not to mention the heat. these are some incredible numbers out here. death valley into the 50s. phoenix even getting up into the mid-40s here going through the mid part of your week. that's a look at world weather. here's the extended forecast.
