welcome to this edition of "newsline." glad you could join us. it's wednesday july 28th in tokyo. i'm catherine kobayashi. foot-and-mouth disease hit miyazaki prefecture in southern japan earlier this year. now officials there say they will ask the japanese government to introduce a simpler and quicker system to identify animals stricken with the disease. miyazaki governor hideo higashikokubaru spoke to reporters on tuesday following the prefecture's lifting of its

last remaining ban on the transfer of livestock three months after the outbreak of the disease. the governor said japan must develop a simpler system for veterinarians to test livestock. he said such a system coupled with photographic analysis could improve the accuracy of foot-and-mouth diagnoses. a government report has concluded that by the time the first case of foot-and-mouth was found in miyazaki in april the disease might already have spread to more than ten other farms. the prefecture is conducting a health survey of cows and pigs at its 7,800 farms. it says it hopes to declare the outbreak over by the end of august. japan will postpone the release of its annual defense report until after the 100th anniversary of japan's colonization of the korean peninsula. it's a move to avoid escalating a territorial dispute with south korea. the report says a disputed island in the sea of japan is japan's territory. it's called takeshima in japan

and tokedo in south korea. every year south korea contests japan's claims. some officials fear south korea may lodge a stronger protest over the disputed island if japan releases its defense paper before the centenary of japan's annexation of korea on august 29th. the government won't remove the description on the island but tuesday decided to delay the approval of the annual report until september. it was due to be submitted to the cabinet on friday. china has held a large-scale military drill near the yellow sea to the west of the korean peninsula. the drill is seen as a move to check the united states and south korea, which are conducting a joint military exercise on the opposite side of the peninsula. china's central television reported on tuesday that the nanjing military region's strategic missile unit held a live ammunition drill using long-range rockets on sunday. it said the drill was held near the yellow sea.

cctv said it was the first such drill held by china. it described the drill as a comprehensive one involving unmanned reconnaissance aircraft and radars. on the eastern side of the korean peninsula, a u.s.-south korea naval drill began on sunday in the sea of japan following north korea's alleged sinking of the south's warship. north korea has denounced the move. china has expressed concern about the possibility of another u.s.-south korean military drill in the yellow sea in its vicinity, saying such a move would heighten tension. north korea has denounced japan's participation in the u.s.-south korean joint military drills. north korea's committee for the peaceful reunification of korea issued a statement on tuesday. it says the united states and south korea are trying to form a military confederation triangle by winning japan over to their side. the statement also said that war flames would spread to the whole of northeast asia ignited by the three countries. four officers from the japanese

maritime self-defense force are participating as observers in the four-day joint naval exercise from sunday near the korean peninsula. it's the first time that japanese self-defense force officers have taken part in a u.s.-south korea exercise. u.s. ambassador to japan john roos is likely to attend a ceremony for the victims of the 1945 atomic bombing of hiroshima. roos would be the first official from the country that dropped the bomb to attend the annual event. u.s. sources told nhk that final arrangements are under way for roos to visit as a representative of the u.s. government to the ceremony on august 6th, the 65th anniversary of the bombing. the ambassador reportedly wishes to attend. roos visited the peace memorial park in october last year, where the ceremony will take place. hiroshima city has been inviting all countries with nuclear weapons to the ceremony since 1998. two other nuclear weapon states,

$17,000. he started looking for work. but when he tls potential employers about his treatment, they say they have no work. >> translator: i jt wt to get back to being a part of society. i want people to understand that i can work while i receive treatme treatment. >> reporter: this business has stepped in to help cancer patients find jobs. naomi sakurai heads the company. she was forced to quit her previous job six years ago after being diagnosed with breast cancer. >> translator: when you lose some physical strength, your abilities don't change at all. it's difficult for cancer patients who have lost their jobs to be part of society. it's our mission to help reintegrate these patients.

>> reporter: sakurai set up an online network that helps cancer patients find jobs. the patients who are job searching can enter their qualifications and availability onto the site. if the information matches what a company is looking for, it offers the applicant a job. breast cancer patient michik michiko yoshima found the job through sakurai's website. when her condition stabilized, she registered with the site. she got a job working with a non-profit organization that collects data about the effects of anti-cancer medications. >> translator: i'm using what i learned from my own bout with cancer to help me in my new job. it is satisfying to go to work every day. it makes life worth living.

>> translator: because she knows what the patients are going through, she can ease their anxiety and fears. she's a great asset. >> reporter: meanwhile, some companies now allow employees to keep working if they have cancer. this big credit card company decided it was cheaper to keep experienced employees even if they became ill. the company's doctor makes sure that the office is comfortable for employees who receive hospital treatment. two years ago the company revised its regulations. employees with cancer can choose to work as few as six hours a day. >> translator: if you have any worries at all, you can talk to a doctor right away. it's a very good support system. >> translator: no one knows what the future holds, but i feel secure here. >> translator: whether people are sick or healthy should not have much effect on being

allowed to work. i think we should focus on their abilities and what kind of results they produce. hi there, welcome back to your world weather update. well, the rain coming into japan is going to help to ease the heat wave across the region. we have been dealing with extreme heat for the past week. the system to the north, though, is going to be bringing some torrential rains to hokkaido, japan and northeastern china today. but this entire region here looking at this series of systems to move on through one after another over the next few days. now, down in the south we are monitoring this tropical depression over the east china sea affecting a wide area here from japan all the way down into taiwan and southeastern china. the heavy rain is going to be pushing into western japan and parts of south korea today, and then down in taiwan still dealing with more heavy rain.

also the same goes for you in southeastern china. lots of tropical activity down in southeastern asia from the philippines through indonesia up into indo-china and even up into southwestern china as well. some of these areas picked up more than 100 millimeters of rain in the last 24 hours. flooding and landslides are not out of the question. but looking a whole lot better for central areas of china, especially along the yangtze river, where they have been dealing with ongoing flooding and landslide problems. let's take a look at your temperatures, then. very, very hot conditions in parts of china. 37 degrees in chongqing. 34 in shanghai. and reaching 36 in beijing. but tokyo's going to be 34. slightly cooler than yesterday. but many areas are going to be exceeding 30 degrees today. let's head to europe. we have a new system that's moving into the british isles. it's going to be the case of occasional rain for scotland. quite breezy near the center of the storm, as well. but much calmer with brighter spells down in england.

that system is going to take a similar path as the last system. so bringing rain to southern norway and into central areas of europe as well, into france, too. we are concerned about eastern europe. we have a low pressure system that's going to be gaining a bit more energy today and bringing heavy bouts of rain to southern poland as well as hungary. flooding is not out of the question here. the ground is quite saturated. and also the system continues to bring in a lot of hot air from the eastern mediterranean. so even though there is rain on the cards it's going to be hot again in kiev. 28 degrees. and 38 degrees in moscow as well. and many areas in western russia still dealing with heat wave conditions too. now, another hot spot is going to be the iberian peninsula. spain and portugal dealing with extreme heat. in fact, let's take a look at some footage coming out of spain. this is taken from the north of

the country and galicia you can see many people made it out to the beach enjoying the sun and swim. and this is in the south of the country in seville now. the temperature made it to 45 degrees celsius yesterday. people sought for different ways to cool down. hats and fans were out, and ice cream was selling fast as well. well, it looks like the heat is going to continue today, on wednesday.ave heat advisories ie for many of you in spain and portugal. you can see reaching 40 degrees in seville and 41 in beja as well. so heat-related illnesses are going to be a major concern. here's your extended forecast now. ♪
