megan: the salt air in new smyrna beach can really eat up bare metal, so we have to get a coat of primer on that 'cuda. skip and darren sanded down the body already, and now it's time to spray. while that dries, skip and victor are cleaning up a quarter panel. after soda blasting the '71 barracuda last week,
6:01 pm
the deck leg looked pretty rough, so i jumped at the chance to do a little cutting and welding in the shop. you are thinking about... i'm thinking about whether i want to... cut it out like so... just cut out the whole piece? and make an all new piece, lip and all, and cut that out. that's probably what we're gonna do. we're gonna go get a piece of metal first. so what we'll do is just cut a simple piece with the shear. put your fingers right there. hold? you're good. that's it. all right. that's it. wow. so now we need 29, right? twenty-nine.
6:02 pm
we want a lip on this line right there. we want it to fold? we want it to fold. that's exactly what we want it to do. see that line right there? we wanna go make a break. that's why they call this a break. we're gonna bend that. we're gonna make our own lip on that. so this lowers and pushes it down? well, this is gonna lock it now. what we're gonna do is lock it. i'll show you. on that line 'cause that's where it's gonna do the break. okay. then what we do-- we take this handle just like this-- oh, we bend that up. we bend this up, right. and of course like everything today... nothing's in place. yeah, like i could lift this. yeah, right, alan. ( grunting ) perfect. you're stronger than you think. i guess.
6:03 pm
how do you know how much of a lip you want on it? well, i know 'cause we measured the lip before. the question is-- why am i losing my bend? and what we'll do is we'll work it with a hammer after, but this way it'll give us a nice straight line to work off of, hopefully. nice. so now what we'll do is we'll go fit this on the deck plate. we'll drill holes where they're supposed to be from behind, draw this out, cut it out of there, and then weld this in. there's our plate, our bottom plate. cool. see the circle right there? see it right there? on the edge? yeah, you need to make a mark. we just wanna get those holes in it.
6:04 pm
so with that now we gotta trim the end of the deck plate. what you don't wanna do is you don't wanna force it. you just wanna-- see how it lays down now? mm-hmm. that's what you want. you don't want it to be forced in there 'cause we're gonna cut that metal out in a few minutes. so it's not gonna be there. so you need to fit it now. so why are we going through the hassle of doing all this when we can just plug up the holes? these holes. how you gonna plug them up? i don't know, i'm asking you. can't you just fill them in? with, you mean, like filler? yeah. 'cause that's what you do if you're a butcher shop.
6:05 pm
6:06 pm
perfect. that's good. got any better? ( indistinct ) it's time to move on. now what we gotta do is we gotta blow this out. we got spray it with... and take about a 20 minute break. let's just say we were gonna be like every other person in this world. we would just weld over that 'cause the customer doesn't see it, and it'd be fine for probably years. what will happen in a day or so, this will turn all into black oxidation. black oxidation doesn't spread. red oxidation spreads. they've been using this in the marine industry forever and a day. now that the cutlass body is off the frame and we have the motor, tranny, and the suspension off, we're ready to take that frame down to edgewater to get sandblasted. we took it over to the sandblaster. we had it sandblasted, even though we originally weren't going this far, but just one of those things you don't stop, and it's like everything. we weren't gonna redo the motor, but now we're putting a cam in.
6:07 pm
we're doing the heads in it. well, the same thing with the frame. one thing led to another. you know we're not gonna go crazy on the frame, but at least lets sandblast it and paint it. we sandblasted the frame 'cause soda blasting will not take off rust. it'll take off paint, bondo, and so forth. needless to say, we want to take off rust, and we don't sandblast here. we send that out, and we have the frame sandblasted. same basic process, but instead of soda they use sand. we'll go back and get the frame later. now we have some time to finish up that deck lid with megan. see how it turns all black now that we let it dry out? mm-hmm. that's what we want. by tomorrow, that'll be flaky, but we'll have this welded on already.
6:08 pm
now the next thing we're gonna have to do just like this 'cause we didn't want it to rust. if we leave this like this-- you see how it's already rusting the new metal? so what we're going to do is we're gonna clean it up a little bit, and then we're gonna spray this on there. this is primer, and it's called weld-proof primer, and what this does is we'll be able to weld this still, but what we can't see no more, it'll stop it from rusting. it'll stay prime. i happen to know roughly what gauge steel this is, so i went and we're gonna start it at two and "d." you pull the trigger for just a few seconds. like that. okay? same thing. you move it back a little. pull the trigger for a little bit. okay? all right.
6:09 pm
now it's gonna be hot, so watch your hand. okay. how do you know if it's too long or too short? you'll start to see it like here. you'll see it get lumpy on you, and if you go too short, you'll hear it. that's good. let me clean this up with the grinder, and then we'll see where we gotta go. now we're ready to finish this beautiful thing. we're basically straightening it like you straighten a dent.
6:10 pm
people are gonna come from all over to see this when we're done. look how good your weld looks now. woo! nice, solid weld. perfect. go on and clean that edge up, and then we are nice-y nice. looks solid. it is solid. looks like we got this piece all done. we'll do the other side, and we'll be all set. perfect. there's your first patch. it's all done. before we pick up the frame on the cutlass, let's the mount the body on the frame of the '56 chevy truck.
6:11 pm
yeah, okay, right. you got it? no, i don't have it, but what am i gonna do now? i know that's why you gave us the heavy end. i understand. we gotta be somewhere close, or drugs are a horrible thing. somebody fix this rubber. come here up front. ready? what kind of drugs are you on? let me see. something's not right. this is the last time we're ever gonna see the roof of this truck. you gotta be one tall person to see the roof of this truck.
6:12 pm
uh-huh. oh, 'cause that was an original. ( indistinct ) what? which bolt did you use? the new one? the cutlass frame is all sandblasted, and it looks like it's ready for paint. we did a great job. wanna take the tarp? ( indistinct ) we need to pick it up as soon as they're done so we can get a coat of epoxy on it, which we did. i bet i beat one of you.
6:13 pm
well, here it is. i see. here's the beauty. here's your chance to shine with your imagination. well, i'm ready. the reason for it-- i own this. this is not one of my customers, and i'm telling you up front, you don't have to call me every time you have an idea. if you have an idea you wanna do on this and yobe the hero. all right. it's simple. i wanna stay a lile old school. right, right. the only kind of things i wanna add into this car is (a) a stereo... okay. and (b) if we could somehow incorporate the logo back into here or something.
6:14 pm
i think that might be possible. that wouldn't hurt my feelings. okay. and just so you know, this is how you get to the gas pump. we need to change that however you wanna do it. whatever's been done here before. just so you know, i'm not gonna keep hitting my head on this. that's the second time today. i would be done with this in a week and a half, just so you know. right, right. we're not even gonna strip this. we don't wanna know what's underneath this. i understand. i'm gonna pull the fiberglass body off, i'm gonna wet sand it, i got a few little things to fix on it, and i'm gonna paint it. the body overall looks like it's in pretty decent shape. it does. the paint don't look bad. it's an old look done, but you know what? everything you see-- i'll make it so the steering wheel isn't falling out. right, right, right. i lost my brakes on the way over here. if you notice by your left foot, there's a big puddle 'cause the master cylinder let go little things like that, i'll probably fix those. well, alan, i tell you what. i'm anxious to get on this thing, and i think we're ready to get this thing looking good.
6:15 pm
first thing we're gonna do is try to take this trim piece off. gonna take the cushion out. boy, this an oldie-goldie. ( chuckles ) this thing is in major need of an overhaul. it's nice to be able to get one that looks like this, and then when you get done, just what a drastic change this car's gonna look like when i get done with it. bingo. i wanna just take this time to thank muscle car workout for giving me a chance to show what i can do and work with them on the show. hopefully, i'll make them proud.
6:16 pm
oh, there we go. okay. that was the hardest piece. ( chuckles ) alan and jim cook just took off out of here with their friend arnie for a road trip. they didn't tell me much, but i suspect they're picking up another car. ( honking ) ♪ headed about 20 miles north of atlanta and had a very, very interesting trip. we started out with a ticket-- a speeding ticket, which the cop was nice enough to ask me if i had any medical or mechanical problem, which of course i didn't. we got there and looked at the vehicle and spent about an hour getting the paperwork done. gas gauge didn't work.
6:17 pm
on top of that, they tell us, "don't worry about it." we leave and a mile and a half away, we run out of gas. about 1:30 in the morning, we decided that we needed about a three-hour break to come on in, so we stopped at a motel and got us three rooms. i go to go to bed and i pulled the covers back, and there are hundreds, if not thousands, of roaches in the bed. i'll just go stay in this big carryall i'm doing for the boy scouts anyway. that'll be fine, except it's 2:00 in the summer in georgia. i'm in there for 20 minutes. it's hot. the only thing i can do is open the window. i open the window-- hundreds of mosquitoes come in and attack me. do i got a red nose still? did that go away yet? get into florida and we start hearing a noise in the engine.
6:18 pm
wouldn't you know it, we hear clunking in the motor. we stop, we add oil, we go less than another exit, and the motor locks up, and we're stuck in st. augustine, florida, about 100 miles from where we gotta go. first thing on the agenda for monday-- we'll find out what the plans are for that carryall. we also need to finish the orange '70 'cuda so we can send it down to dick french. for more information on this program, visit our website at... ♪
