you know, the concert is amazing, and you have chosen to have such a wide range of music in it. why did you decide to do that, not just do irish music, which everybody thinks about when they think of you? >> ronan: well, i think, rhea, the audiences know that i can sing irish music, that's not a problem. and in this concert i actually do some of my all-time favorites. but i think what's most important for the audiences, that while i'm a tenor, i'm from ireland, and sometimes people get this kind of misconceived idea as if he's an irish tenor, he's just going to sing irish. well, i wanted the audience, and your listeners, to hear a wide diversity of music. and i wanted them to hear stuff that i enjoyed singing as well. i mean, i go from opera to rock, contemporary to kind of the classic, and the old style music. and, i mean, we do a piece called "people get ready," curtis mayfield sings it, and it's something that i absolutely love. i wanted to share

to the next part of the show. it is so exciting! do you have a part in the next part that you like the most? >> ronan: i do. i think there's a part, there's a song i sing from a song that was written by a lady called mary fahl, and it's "going home." and i remember mary told me the story about her brother. what i think is wonderful is that this song is a great song for service men and women to hear because, after all, these women and men protect our country and it's great to be able to sing something that's very emotional and very real, and i think our listeners will enjoy that song. >> rhea: i have no doubt that you're going to enjoy that song. i hope that you will not only enjoy that song, but every part of this program, and enjoy it enough to get up and go to the phone and make the best possible pledge that you can to this station. it's going to mean a lot to you, and it will mean a great deal to us. enjoy the next part of the show. >> ronan: thank you.

>> ronan tynan has always possessed a fierce fire of determination. born with legs that had a deformity below the knees, he learned early on that life could be, indeed would be, a struggle. his father gave him a pony with the hope that it would strengthen his legs. he learned to ride and compete. but complications set in, and as a young man, ronan decided to have the legs removed so that he might stand straighter. his mother found a college that would accept him in physical education and he learned to use his prosthetic legs like few others. he began to compete in all manner of sports, and went on to win 18 gold medals, and set 14 world records at the paralympics.

smashing barriers has always been ronan tynan's style. soon he had a new goal; hwanted to become a doctor. and by the age of 33 he was. his medical colleagues noted yet another talent. in pubs, ronan would regale the crowd with his singing. they urged him to try his luck in a british talent show... and he won! ♪ the department heads at the hospital took up a collection so ronan could go to england to study voice. his success seemed to know no bounds. but an infection suddenly sidetracked his musical career almost as quickly as it began, and so ronan returned to medicine. yet his love for singing never

waned and he recovered to join a new group, the irish tenors. he soon went solo and ronan tynan was discovered by kings and queens and commoners alike. his performance at the funeral of president ronald reagan introduced him to much of the world, and his voice helped sooth america's pain after 9/11. today he brings joy and energy wherever he goes, for ronan tynan is indeed more than magic. >> ronan: this next song that i'm about to sing is a song that i have really grown very fond of. it was written by leonard cohen. the whole idea of actually doing this song kind of stems back a couple years ago when actually they were auditioning for "shrek" on broadway. now, yours truly thought,

this next song i'm about to sing for you was written by an amazing writer called mary fahl. mary had a brother who went to vietnam, and they kept tremendous communication, and always the ending of her brother's letter was "i'm going home." mary had this amazing bond with him and decided to celebrate him, and the fact that he is no longer with her, she wrote this beautiful song called "going home." so i dedicate this song to all the amazing men and women who protect, and have protected, this great country. ♪

i was very lucky to have an extraordinary mother, who, to be honest with you, the reason i sing in front of you is because of her. she had such tenacity and perseverance that even though i was born with a physical challenge she never let that get into her dream of where i would end up. there's a song that my mother absolutely loved and it's called "red is the rose," and we'd like to do this song for you. ♪ come over the hills, my bonnie irish lass come over the hills

of course, that you have musicians from all walks of life, and i ended up getting a lot of musicians who play on broadway. and many years ago i was actually picked to do the man of la mancha on broadway, and again, you know, sometimes you have to make a very difficult decision because it's seven shows a week and i wasn't sure that i had the stamina... >> carolyn: pretty grueling. >> ronan: exactly. but in the process of doing some of these things i met some great musicians and tagged them on. and then i was very lucky, my pianist, who has been with me, bill lewis, he's been with me for nearly 10 years, and bill and i, we're like two brothers. we go all over the world together. bill is an extraordinary man. he's a sensitive player, magnificent player. great singer himself. you can see in the show he harmonizes. then the other thing too with bill is, we picked -- i picked a song called "red is the rose," and, you know, many people feel, you know, that

i zone in on my parents. well, there's a reason for that. they're the reason i'm here. my mom was an amazing woman. she's the backbone of my backbone. she was determined that she would give me every opportunity so that i would become what she believed was possible. my father was an extraordinary little man. my mom was only 5'4 ½. my father was only 5'4. >> carolyn: what happened? >> ronan: i know. so there you go. god. god decided there had to be someone big in the family. but both of them had, they were like the yin and the yang. mom was focused on getting educated, doing so many great things. dad was interested in the love of music and wanted me so much to pursue it. believe me, before your audiences ever heard me, the cows in the field heard me. >> carolyn: and you used to sing with your father as well. >> ronan: yeah, we used to sing all the time. and the one thing about, as dad used to say, he said "sing sweetly. whatever you do sing sweetly."

well, ladies and gentlemen, this next song i think really has a real deep meaning for me. we've all in our lives had the great privilege of having wonderful parents. my father was an extraordinary man. believe it or not, he was only 5'4", and of course i stand in front of you 6'4", 260 pounds of raw beef. but what can you do? nature does play tricks. there have been tremendous songs written about fathers to bring back the memory of someone you really love, and phil coulter wrote this beautiful song, and it touches the souls of many people, and it's called "the old man." ♪
