(i don't know how old he is. he's probably 10 or something) but i always try to encourage young people to take up the guitar and pursue it if that desire is in them.

because put a guitar in a person's hand at an early age, and they get good at it. anything can happen. it can take you.... i'm standing up here tonight because i had that dream when i was a little boy. and i came from nowhere in australia. i like where i'm going and where i've been. it's because of that one thing that i believe in the gift i was given. and i believe i had to pursue it with every ounce of my energy. and i'm still trying to get good at this. that's what i want to do. (laughter) but anyway, i signed a cd for him, and i said, "i want to see the day, i want to be around to be in line to buy your cd." and you know what he said? he said, "you'll be dead by then,"

i wrote mombassa in kenya.

of course, the city of mombassa is in kenya. it's right on the coast. but we were in nairobi, and i went out to visit the children there that i sponsor through world vision . so i started the song after i got to know the family that i sponsor. i started to write the song in the back of the smelliest old four-wheeled drive i've ever been in. and my heart was just overflowing with love for these people. ♪ (mombassa) ♪ (mombassa)

(applause) i'm a concert musician, and i travel all over the world. so i get to watch tv everywhere i go. and public television in america by far is the most entertaining and the most important to me. i learn so much. i expand my mind. and i expand my knowledge of the world around me whether it be news, current affairs, or music programs. that's why it's so important. it really pulls it together for me. an artist like me would never get to the masses without the help of public television. there are so many great artists who deserve to be heard and deserve to be seen. and you can't do it by regular pop man television.

you have to do it through public television, and we really need the support of public television.
