6:01 pm
collectors and automotive enthusiasts around the world. the company produces collector car auctions in las vegas, scottsdale, and palm beach. barrett-jackson.com. ♪ last time on muscle car workout we finished the seats and door panels of the gto. and let me tell ya, that car is looking good. this week we're finally gonna flame the '61 carryall and get a head start on the '68 cutlass. in fact, i think a box of parts just arrived. so i had been waiting for this order for a long time, and we got most of the parts that we need to complete the project.
6:02 pm
there's a few items that were on back-order, and it was really neat opening the boxes and looking at all the pretty new stuff that i had to put it back together with, including the interior, the outside trim, and all of the things that make it look like new. what i did is, i ordered all the after-market original interior kits, i ordered the compte interior kit, which is an exact duplicate of the original, the way this originally came out. because that keeps the originality of it, and also if in years to come i should decide to sell it, i think it will add to the value of it. from the interior and exterior of the car, it will be just like the original, when it was new. so i'm excited, and hope i can get behind the wheel of it soon. just in time, too, because today we're gonna visit kelly who is putting together the interior for jim's car. the first thing we want to do
6:03 pm
is try to take the back off the bottom so we can disassemble the covers and stuff. pop off. yep. okay, we're ready to pop this off. here we go. we have to get all the hardware off, and then just start pulling all these hog rings, and you should be able to get everything down to the frame. looks like we might have a broken spring over here too, i see a spring sticking through there. so we may have some problems there when we get in there. pretty bad. the seat frame down to its base, this is basically just everything but the tracks. again, we'll probably lightly go over that with a wire brush a little bit, and probably shoot a little paint on it. you're gonna take this basket,
6:04 pm
and you're gonna stick it on here. try to kind of line it up where you think it goes. because we're not changing out the springs on this back rest, we've got new foam, we're gonna put the new foam on, we're gonna slip a cover on it, and see what we end up with. normally if we have a problem when we put these covers on, at i'll do is cut a small piece of plastic and wrap across the top of it. when you go to pull your cover over, it just make it a little easier for the cover to slip over. i'm just gonna cut a small piece of this plastic. you want to make sure you can see where your curve is, you want to put your curve right on the curve, make sure that that foam is right on the curve, everything's lined up real good for you. we'll see what we got. tell you what, i'm pretty pleased with that. there we go. megan: the body is not quite ready for the interior yet. in fact, we're just getting to the final prime.
6:05 pm
looks like we'll be painting that pretty soon. right now, lonnie is on his way with a special guest to take a look at the boy scout-themed gmc carryall. it's great you could get down here, because this project, you really have a hard time visualizing it from raleigh, and the occoneechee council consists of about-- what is it, john, 20,000 scouts? john: we have over 18,000 scouts involved in the program today. by the way, how is camp durant coming along? camp durant is coming along very well. we are about 80% done with our grand lodge and dining hall, which is gonna be, really, the flagship facility of the camp. when we're finished, it's gonna be 16,000 square feet, it'll seat 700-plus scouts and their leaders, plus staff. it's going to have a dining hall on the top, and a trading post and grille down at the bottom. and it'll form kind of the center of the new program center for the camp. and it's the kind of program that we believe those 18,000 young people deserve.
6:06 pm
and certainly your involvement in the council over the years, having served as our president, on the board for all these years and your dedication by helping to make this happen is gonna be part of the magic of what we're gonna have when we finish this project. i wanted you to come down and see what we're doing, and get your input and ideas about how we finish it out. i believe we're over halfway through with it, but now we get into the logos and how we work scouting into this car. and this is a 1961 carryall? yes. we found this car, the idea emerged that we would restore it with a scout theme. i would like to get all of the scout colors in, i'd like to get the cub scout color-- well, you've got that. the blue and the gold-- we got that! with the logos, the ranks. i think it's gonna look like a boy scouvehicle. i agree.
6:07 pm
and from the day you called me, we've been so excited, we've announced it at our board meeting. we appreciate everything that you're doing for scouting back in north carolina while you're down here, and i want to come back again and see it in production. this is a really special project for us. we're excited about it, and we're glad to see that lonnie and john like the work that we've done so far. now it's all hands on deck in the spray booth as we get the gmc carryall lookin' hot. flames are my style. i've been driving those style flames since i was a little kid. and as far as the design, i pretty much let the vehicle tell me where the flames should go. getting ready to lay the boy scout vehicle flame job out. what i'll do to begin is, i'll make some guidelines, put some little marks here and there so i'll have something to go by as far as where things go, so they stay somewhat even. they're not gonna be exactly even, because i free-hand them instead of using a pattern. put little pieces of tape on the vehicle
6:08 pm
so i can see about how they'll flow. i'll lay this line out so i can have a good distance away from this body line. now we'll do the same thing to the other side. if i see lines that are uneven, we can pull the tape and change it. see, those are way too big, i think. paco: that's what you're looking for, right? yeah.
6:09 pm
6:10 pm
it's just been quite a project. it was more of a project than we kind of anticipated, and turned out pretty cool. megan: it makes a big difference. look at the "before," and look at the "after." it's definitely starting to look beefier. now we want to make it look shinier. the panels are coming off again for a wet sanding. when i first started, my fingers would bleed. but now they don't bleed anymore, they just-- there's no more fingerprints. it's from folding the paper in half and then having your finger on a piece of sandpaper and then just basically sanding 'em away.
6:11 pm
alan: this is the project i was talking to you about, the blower motor, amc blower motor. american motors. american motors. low compression mode, obviously. obviously a leaded engine, ran unleaded, it's gonna be unleaded now. so whatever you think we need to do on it... what we'll do it get 'em apart, inspect everything. we'll probably have to put exhaust seats in, for the unleaded fuel you have to have a hardened exhaust seat. we'll make sure the valves are still in good condition, 'cause they're pretty old, might have to put new valves in for what you're doing,
6:12 pm
because you're gonna be making a lot more horsepower than this thing was intended for back then. no doubt. we'll check the springs, find out what kind of cam you're putting in, we may have to change the springs to make sure it's compatible with the cam shaft. we'll find out what head gasket in case we have to o-ring the deck, or make sure it's a smooth surface for a multi-layer gasket, whatever type you're gonna use in the motor. you'll probably end up putting new fasteners in because it's a supercharger on the thing, it'll make a lot more cylinder pressure. we'll go from there. strip all the yellow paint off, and then you'll repaint it. i'm sure it'll be matching to the car it's going in. now, here's the killer: it's a week. not a problem. if we want to finish the t-bucket on time, we're gonna have to keep the parts moving. so i'm gonna go ahead and pick up the chrome.
6:13 pm
ready to get started? we're ready. first of all, what's been done to these brackets? these brackets came in, they had old plating on 'em, we stripped the old plating off, we polished the metal up, and then they were actually plated for over an hour, of copper, then they were taken out of the copper, re-polished, and now they're ready to go to the nickel and chrome. so what is our first step? first step is to walk that way. all right. this first step is to put these in the cleaner, that's gonna remove any residue of polish and grease off the parts. it's just dissolving it? yeah, just like cleaning your clothes. all it is is a detergent, and it's just a little stronger. and you just get a little brush on it, make sure you got nothing stuck on here.
6:14 pm
watch yourself, 'cause it splashes sometimes. what's the temperature of this tank? this runs about 175. wow. this is a running rinse water. just regular water? regular water. to get that soap off. and now we're going into a mild acid. and this is actually to neutralize the cleaner. and then again into running water. okay. now we're into the nickel. its there a reason why it's green? it's just the nickel. nickel's green. the solutions are always green in nickel, and that's what you have. let me check this. you stay right there. i'm staying. what are you checking? temperature? just adjusting the amperage, that you pull the right amount of amperage, you don't have too much, then you wind up with burns on the ends. now, this'll stay in there at least 30 minutes.
6:15 pm
all right, so we're all done? we're all done. and i get to do the honors? you're gonna do the honors. put a pair of gloves on. got it? got two fingers in one, but-- don't do that. now we got it? i did it again. that's okay, they're big gloves. all rightie? grab that one and pick that one up. that's it. there you go. wow. okay? now, come this way. don't drip it on you. just rinse it in here a couple of times. looking less green. now, nice and easy. what's this? this is chrome. okay, you're in. is it in? yep, it's in. now we turn it on. what are all these little balls? that's to keep the fumes down. chrome is in solution here. this is lead anodes,
6:16 pm
and this is what activates the solution. and the chrome is in the tank, and that's what's activating around there, and depositing. can i do it? yeah, just don't splash it on yourself 'cause it'll stain you. wow! it looks nasty. come this way. yeah, but it looks pretty. it'll look better when we're done. just hang it on there. that's it, you're done. wow! fantastic! ooh! just water. copper right there. ( indistinct ) that was quite a chemistry lesson. and the t-bucket brackets look fantastic. next i need to check in at the coating shop to see how our headers look. today we're here at the header shop. now, we know alan's working on the t-bucket, so one of the things we want to pay special attention to is our headers. this header right here is gonna be seen while driving the car, so we want to make sure that it looks perfect the entire time.
6:17 pm
so let's get started. all right, gonna put this one in. now, it's gonna get a little noisy in here. whenever you're gonna refinish a piece of metal or finish a brand-new piece of metal the biggest thing you gotta be concerned about is, it's got to be clean. it cannot have any dirt, fingerprints, grease, whatever. it's gotta be clean. the hardest part about doing it is getting it clean. you'll either end up sandblasting something, you'll use some kind of media blast to clean it. much better. once you have it cleaned, you cannot touch it with your fingers anymore. bare hands will make it rust and it'll leave finger marks after you put your coating on it. so after you have it nice and clean,
6:18 pm
you want to handle it with rubber gloves. you get it clean, take it out, you blow it off, get all the dust and dirt off of it, because the dirt will cook back to the metal. ( air hissing ) so you gotta make sure it's off. then you're gonna put it in the oven, and you're gonna cook it for about half and hour, 140, 180 degrees. that burns off any oil or grease, fingerprints, sweat drops, what have you-- they'll burn off of it. gonna be hot. now, this is the hardest part about the whole thing. you gotta get the coating on right, you gotta get it on heavy enough, and even. we might do this a couple of times till we get it right. all right, we just put the ceramic coating on. now, it goes on green, and it'll dry to a silvery-looking color. after you have your coating on it, you're gonna let it air-dry for about 5, 10 minutes.
6:19 pm
then you're gonna put it back in the oven, and you're gonna cook it for another half hour. now that it's cooled down to a manageable temperature, we're gonna put it over here in the glass bead cabinet... and we're gonna start to polish it. the glass bead cabinet will give it a satin finish. something that is gonna show, like headers on this t-bucket, they're gonna be right out there in the open. so you gotta take extra time to make sure that anything that's exposed looks the way it's supposed to look. but they'll be right there for everybody to see, so they got to look good. back at the shop, alan needs to put the frame together.
6:20 pm
the t-bucket was like everything else that we start with -- rough. the frame wasn't all that bad. i've seen worse. even right now that we're done with it it's not a strong frame, we didn't reinforce it. it's strictly just a rectangle in an old-style frame, two rails, front and rear cross member. look-wise, it's all open. there's no hood on the car, no fenders on the car, no quarter panels on the car. it's basically a bucket-- hence "t-bucket"-- but it's basically a bucket sitting on top of the frame, so you see a lot of the frame. so we might spend, on the front, some time and energy trying to make it look good. because when you're driving it, you see that frame. after we sandblasted it, we realized that somebody-- which this hasn't been done in years-- braised half the brackets on. we don't braise now. i just put everything back the way they had it. only difference is, i took the brass out and welded it on instead.
6:21 pm
like on any car, if you don't start out with a good foundation, everything's gonna be off. it's not just a street rod, that goes up right up to modern-day collision work. if you don't start out with the frame being right, every time you bolt something on it just gets progressively worse. we probably got 25 hours, 30 hours into it. frame's all set, we re-welded it, we got all the filler prime done on it, and we're about ready to put that in the booth and start painting. megan: while alan finishes that up, mike is putting together the amc motor for the t-bucket. mike: today we're just reassembling the short block and putting the cylinder heads onto the amc motor. i don't really like putting together an engine in this condition, putting it back in the car like this, i would have preferred to do a rebuild on it. there's just not that many amc motors like this running around anymore, they've been out of business for a long time, and just haven't made 'em in years and years. it was running good when it came out, it's just since we're already at this point, it would have been nice to be able to rebuild the engine. we were waiting for the timing chain set.
6:22 pm
that's a pretty rare set, had to come in for orlando. so we were set back a couple of hours because of that. so we're just cleaning it, putting in a new cam shaft. the cylinder heads have been rebuilt, and that's pretty much it. cleaning is always kind of a nasty job. this engine's gonna be painted before it's put back in the frame, so essentially what we're gonna get to the point today is to where they can actually paint the engine, and then we'll reassemble it from there. we did a lot of running around this week, but we're not done yet. alan is gonna take me to the annual turkey run at daytona international speedway. today we're at the 35th annual turkey run, and we are with randy sykes. good morning. how are you? i'm fine. we got a beautiful day and the crowds are coming in as we speak. how long have you been with this event? i go back to the very beginning, 35 years ago, at bel-air plaza. handful of cars sitting by a1a,
6:23 pm
and who would have ever thought that we would fill the entire infield of daytona international speedway? i know that we get a lot of cars in our shop for years now, just like it's an auction almost, where "we gotta have it done for thanksgiving, thanksgiving it's gotta be done, we're putting it for sale there." i think the other aspect of it that you're certainly well aware of is whether they want to sell it or they just want to come out, because it's a lot nicer to be able to be in one of these vintage cars because you get that thumbs-up and you get the smiles and everything. and then you've put all this time and effort, it's like, "man, we want to be able to enjoy it." is there a good amount of muscle cars located at this event? because they are so popular, we go have a large contingent of muscle cars. the crowds are always huge. when i run into 'em, you know, "how ya doin'?" "man, i'm tired.
6:24 pm
"this is a big place to walk, but we're having a tremendous time." as far as this event goes, as far as car enthusiasts go, how important is this to continue the way it's going? it's a fun event. that's the whole designated purpose of having the show is to have people come out and enjoy themselves. now, the fact that so many show up and continue to show up, and their cars just get better and better, and the fact, because of, once again, the venue, a lot of these people know they have a good shot at being featured in some magazine or on some program in the future. well, everyone wants that. whether they admit it or not, they want the exposure. lots of car show people are out. everyone just grins from ear to ear if they can see their car in a magazine. well, thank you so much for talking to us today. i think we're gonna start roaming around. walkin' around and see some! that is a car enthusiast's dream vacation. and we're doing some dreaming of our own here at muscle car workout.
