opportunity. the cyclists ended the final stage on the shores here in paris and the first in the history of the race. the british cyclist was the first to cross the line, although he is still the overall winner of this 100th edition. our sports correspondent has been following the race and sent us this report. >> he has become the winner of the 100th edition of the tour de france bringing home the second win in two years. and of course for britain. finishing four minutes 20 seconds. he also claims the white jersey and also the polkadot jersey. the spaniard finishing a little over five minutes.

it is said to be very disappointed if he did not win. he was the latest. >> it is been a special edition of the tour de france. this is the perfect way to finish up the 100th edition. everyday i woke up with some kind of challenge to get through to this day. it is really amazing. i have my teammates to thank, the team to thank. they all did a fantastic job here. >> will be a hot tip to go on and win more. he was not the first over the line here. dallas the german 25- year-old. he was actually beaten into third place. and his fellow german, claiming his fourth win.

. good evening to you both. i will begin with you. last year he was key to helping his teammate. on this very special 100th edition of the race, was it worth the wait? >> i guess you can say it was worth the wait because he won the 100th edition. of course, he has had time to enjoy it because he has been wearing the yellow jersey for nearly two weeks. he won it on the eighth state and has never let it go since. since he was entering the final stage, pretty relaxed, he was seen sipping some champagne as he was seen riding his bike into paris. we saw some footage of him writing into the finish line with his teammates. he was really very happy. everyone saw him as the overwhelming favorite and he did not disappoint.

south africa. he was writing -- riding for a team. he was one of the teammates. i remember when i was doing work at eurosport. we had him sit in a piece every month. we sipping, who is this guy? he was only in his early 20s. we were quite surprised and then all of a sudden he went quiet for a bit. but then sky signs in and suddenly he comes through. last year he was exceptional in supporting him on his way to tour de france. it was agreed that he would be the one to lead sky this year. wiggins said, no. then wiggins got injured.

as i mentioned this africa roots and the link, there was a big first on the tour de france. there was the first african winner and he was the first one to really celebrate his friend who won. he said it was a great day for african cycling. >> you are right. he was the first african stage winner of the race. the first one was robbie hunter a few years ago. and then obviously he gave the jersey back. they were in that team i mentioned earlier together. >> a big day for him. he really was the overwhelming favorite when the race started

was there any really chance that anyone seemed to come close to being able to beat him this year? >> he was the favorite. we all thought he would be the one to win that you never know. there are crashes. you have to be on your toes throughout the race. his team was very good. he took time over his rivals until the last week when he had a slight wobble. he was very impressive. >> you should not be checking that champagne before you cross the finish line. the superstition person in me says to not do that. >> it was difficult tonight.

a bit tipsy, but he was fine. he did well. >> it is a pretty big tradition if the yellow jersey is pretty sure. they tend to celebrate way before the finish line and let the other writers who maybe did not get to have the spotlight spread out knee and for the finish line and then get the glorious when that was gotten on the finish line. a couple earing, it was a good day. of course, the yellow jersey overshadows all the other performances. >> that they're up to a rocky start, didn't it? that was an inauspicious beginning >> one of those memorable moments with that bus

that was getting stuck at the finish line. >> exactly. no one could've expected that on thescript. they had to bring the finish and then suddenly they changed their mind because the bus managed to black -- managed to back up. >> you can tell who really stole the spotlight from the one a a lot of people were expecting to finish. first mark won the four stages. he was maybe expecting to win that, but he came in third in that final stage. we are now going to turn to the person who has been covering this race for us. we saw that big finish. as we said, he was really the
