welcome to nhk. i'm in tokyo. u.s. president barack obama said he's spoken by phone with his iranian counterpart. they had the first conversation between american and iranian leaders in more than 30 years. >> just now i spoke othe phone with president of the islamic republic of iran. the two of us discussed our ongoing efforts to reach an agreement over iran's nuclear program. >> obama said he promised his country would not develop nuclear weapons.

he said he now believes the u.s. and iran can reach a comprehensive solution over tehran's nuclear program. the white house spokesperson says the conversation lasted 15 minutes. the last time u.s. and iranian leaders spoke was the year of the hostage crisis in tehran, 1979. meanwhile, an iranian diplomat is getting ready for more talks with the international nuclear watchdog. he spoke with an international atomic energy agency representative for the first time since the president took office last month. and they agreed to meet again next month for a more comprehensive discussion. iran's envoy to the aiea they met with the agency's deputy director general and head of safeguards. >> we had constructive discussions on the different issues and we agreed to meet again on the 28 the of october.

>> analysts say the talks next month will pave the way for inspectors to visit iran's nuclear facilities. they are repeatly asked for aks to a military facility outside of a rap and suspect the site plays a role in production of nuclear weapons. japanese prime minister shinzo abe used the u.n. general f general assembly to highlight the country's as a force for peace and he said he's pleased to have a chance to outline what he wants the japanese to do on the global stage. >> translator: i was able to convey my resolve to the world that japan will play a more ak tough role for global peace, stability and prosperity. >> abe also continued on his meeting with iranian president. >> translator: i feel that the president of iran has a positive

attitude and he is trying to cooperate with the international community. >> abe says he'll work with the peaceful resolution of iran's nuclear issue based in past friendly ties with the country. prime minister abe also used his time at the u.n. to call for reform of the security council. he said japan's leaders are as keen as ever to have their country become a permanent member but a chinese government spokesperson says the japanese should first face up to their past. >> translator: any country that wishes to play a greater role on the security council should look at its history and take responsibility for it. it's impossible to challenge the outcome of world war ii. >> he also reacted to abe's statement that the japanese will not tolerate changes to the

maretime order through force or koers and they say it's acting legally as a maretime statement and should not be criticized and said the japanese and chinese should work together to preserve peace and stability in the east china sea. the government of japan and china have had strained relation force more than a year because of a territorial doispute and nw they're reaching out to each other and talking of healing their tying through cultural exchanges. the culture minister of japan sat down with his chinese counterpart. they held the first ministerial talks since last december. he says that they described relations as having stalled and being in need of improvement. leaders in tokyo and beijing are logger heads over the islands in the east china sea. japan controls the island and

china claims them. analysts are waiting to see whether the ministerial talks will lead to better relations. authorities in pakistan say that the death toll from an earthquake devastated a southwestern region has rizzs on the 515. risen to 515. seven points in mountainous parts of the province. more than 600 people were injured. prime minister sharif set up a support fund to collect donations from citizens and provincial governments. military officials say armed separatists launched an attack friday on a helicopter carrying aid to survivors. a chopper care ridge hrying senior government officials

escaped a rocket attack the day before, local officials are urging insurgents to let rescue teams do their work. and international scientists are urging governments to do more to fight climate change. they're calling for bigger reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. the intergovernment panel on planet change released a report on physical evidence behind the warming climate. the report says it's extremely likely that human influence has been the dominant cause since the 1950's. and it says the world's average temperature could rise by 4.8 degrees celsius by the end of the century if the density of carbon monoxide in the atmosphere continues to rise. the experts estimate that sea levels could rise by 82 centimeters and say it's very likely that massive storm surges and heatwaves will become more frequent in the later half of the century. >> we are certainly making an enormous effort to simplify the

messages even though they represent very rigorous signs of phenomena. so i expect that the world will understand the simplicity but the gravity of the message that people like. >> japanese leaders pledged four years ago to ref dues their country's greenhouse gas emissions by a quarter from 1990 levels by the year 2020. but officials now say they have to review that goal as nuclear power reactors across the country have gone offline. they are trying to set a new goal by the next u.n. climate conference in. and the industry is buying a major u.s. carbon fibermaker. officials say they will pay $584 million to acquire the entire companies. they say the acquisition is aimed at strengthening the fiber business in such promising

fields as osha parts and wind energy. carbon fibers are stronger than steel. his carbon fibers are using in state-of-the-art aircraft bodies but company officials say it's been difficult to cut costs for expanding applications for the use of teert. they say that the technology to produce these fibers at relatively lower costs offers an opportunity for further growth. here's your three day look at your forecast.
