11:00 am
we need to put the tv that will come to a brand new edition of the cut while that the programs that presents the different pieces that she feared that if the voices on taiwan on the host recall for those of you webbing to tie one else will travel to different beautiful sights are on the island. kabul the sounds of taiwan on today's program was delighted
11:01 am
to have a true expert who's been collecting sounds mean come on over ten years and he's andrew ryan is currently a program host wouldn't reveal how one international and to welcome the pope. i remember everybody's going to be in wallets appointed to have the pm called into the into whether the start of today's program by asking you to tell us a little bit about yourself well i recently came to taiwan about seventeen years ago this time from the united states originally a night to get a fulbright scholarship that is considered a scotch with its own co sponsored a taiwan and in the us government. and after being here for your doing researching and studying chinese. i'm eyeing end up staying at was the guy who is in a tuesday night you know a lot of people say you know did you know you're in a state as long as he did and i have no idea i was only planning on staying here for you know maybe you're in the know it because it came in and then not enough to have that kind of outlook on
11:02 am
things in the end of the synagogue was especially given the strong personal connection with the place of course. and though want i want off all the places that you could've gone in a one time will heal people ask me that all the time is the end obviously this has led to do with with having studied chinese um isn't as consistent of late which racing in college. sometimes i was always fascinated with with mandarin chinese in width with learning chinese indian which is part of the world as well. and in him you never see i've gone to that time then i'd stayed in china for the summer in shanghai. this is back in nineteen ninety four. and so like i came to taiwan with my life that i'm seeking your business. and there's something about taiwan there really. he attracted the attention of really into in chinese is a hint that he has placed us in a nano and they any good citizen test is often a probe that great and they didn't actually this is kind of a real connection then you feel a connection with the placement. you don't
11:03 am
ask me questions you can go with the universe is leading though you say you did above the years researching taiwan going to research what the time we were researching the feasibility of teaching english language in the elementary schools is back at that point on the english education started in seventh grade health and so how was it was kind of dealing with this whole no idea do we get kids to start learning. we are looking great. or is that too early of course in taiwan kids in a house that a full schedule and have to learn so many languages you know. if your native tongue is his taco word no i don't mean i know many speak mandarin in school in the new zealand english that's three languages. it's for their grade. as long as you know when i was a kid we need to learn. secondly we've been told to high school. so we were studying the feasibility in it and working with kids in. looking for ways of teaching kids that was it you
11:04 am
know the most effective way than twenty s you would hear some of you know what was to lead the majors just to get a bill for example language in the unfamiliar line it's perfect to bagel mandarin chinese is no there there is always more to learn. how the flu and making some friends and things would with any of these he also became a she. we know it's it's funny thinking back so far i feel like your costs and instantly transported me back to nineteen eighty six in its entirety remember what was going through my mind it at the design this but i'm in obviously you have a lot of issues of culture shock them of different foods that might not be familiar. you know too that the prisoner lot of kids you know what i smell them the first time i come. even simple things like radishes will fall by one i would smell that. you know the smell of that i would do if you would turn me on. you know seventeen years later now i actually cost of food prepared with all those both
11:05 am
of these that i was afraid and beginning all kind of i've revisited them as um you know that somebody has to endure for a long time and in it you know you get use to use you learn to appreciate things that are going to be and exactly ok hobart oval for ever get into this at the vet because every one thousand dollars the news of the us. but that's actually an interesting piece up with a purse on my hands feel strangely enough i recently enjoyed it and that has toppled into the twenty two now as i mentioned that the kenyan the pool that your program host revealed tom lane national party high. but what provence to do at the rti and also in addition to rti. you have other programs available for example it could be a student well it's a little slack with korea taiwan in a recent landslide. i begin working camille basin is called the central broadcasting system. this cynic i went to the big transformation mom and i hope that i was in nineteen ninety nine actress
11:06 am
been working. it feels like heaven and on the up and across through the years. our goal is to share power with the rats the world. which is very similar to weigh in on this movements of this program does is welcomed by the end to it when i've done everything from politics to mention food. collecting sounds to tell how one stories. umm you name it anything about how one that we could into the side i've done that in the program is very lucky this. and in addition to rti. he also hosts a program to start and recently caught on video from here to visit with the telescope is about the program because that's when you know they're the people that get to know taiwan to taiwan's sound and tell with all that well from here to there i tasted my startup her for telling our listeners too. i don't know the cure is dispelled a tga are the same as the year and we need to clearly hear this
11:07 am
i insist on a play on words and on but basically with this program. what they've done is they paired me up with a visually impaired co hosts that it was completely blind. and then to rest. i've tried this old taiwanese car move in nineteen seventy nine is the nineteen seventy nine but it all there yet and they fell off the top of it but it's a video from the seventies and has no idea the driving of course on here although my co host is busy one. the vaccine. i can so we take this car we drive it is all around taiwan. it's inexpensive typical kind of highway show but the roadtrip show the instability in the misty an indian american tv interview made speeches were you people go on the road and the concept of a road trip in and that's what we do it to show something that did people really done before in taiwan. it's a week into these places. the rbc three sound that's that's my
11:08 am
baby is recording sounds to tell stories and my co host of course also relies on sound together. believe me i show how would you conclude that this will begin in with the oval here today. well if you go into a restaurant avoid going to a temple knew how this one. well basically that the program each program is not based on one highway in taiwan so it could be in a provincial highway number two on each of which goes to you and in the northeast coast. i want to pay it so we would start off where the highway begins in taipei. i'm in that we would travel all the way to soleil been all along the way of the year the production team is an amazing job of helping us to find an easing of the oldest community that their homework beforehand is finding people to talk to people who housed in a traditional family business people for doing things that i've never experienced before. i've been so lucky i commit my time in taiwan i've been very very
11:09 am
fortunate to alot of different places in a week this program i haven't been to any place that i've been to before. ok so that is to find some really fun places to go home but then the really special parts about the program are what we read it to somebody that we were planning on reading into when we come across a sound that we were expected to come you'll come across something interesting has become part of the show moves at houses organic kind of traveling feel to it like we're actually going there and see friends in a car. you know we obviously do have a plan this thing can change. it's just like a real non adventurous lives sometimes but not understand the program to start it and then do you think is going to places like the city never been to before i took a new associate with some storage beneath all that was very touching. you know i know you've met some people a day like the seething expect but there were some of the story states. you know i'm always amazed by the resilience of
11:10 am
the taiwanese people and i think that the people that we interview the most fascinating people that when we come across this are people who have gone through hardships have overcome them in it doing something fascinating. you know these people are very good. i've met some the most inspiring people on this adventure of all on tv one example we read that these three i'm hearing impaired artists. when you work with rock and when you work with its marble. one who worked with of waiting and went to work with metal. and they all create completely different types of art pieces when they're creating these are works they have completely different sounds and all three of them come from three completely different backgrounds different up upbringing different from the experience and experiences in a few of them were aboriginal from different times. it's still coming across them and hearing their stories and looking at what they create as their part in ensuring
11:11 am
that talk about their art and the other end of my co hosts he's been officially impaired been communicating with someone who is deaf. so one person to person b think about this. i've never seen a blind person to person communicate directly with one another not here not impossible. is it time you could buy a computer. no course but face to face. it's a very very not you know moving experience for me to be part of that view not to say i don't i don't view myself as a personality. i'm not somebody who's personally interesting but i'm there for other people to come and meet each other. this inferno for people in a home for watching on tv to meet other people and answer what i view my role is kind of like a condom use and so for me to be there while my co hosts and the pseudo tough artists are communicating with one another's. you know it it's it's an honor for me and i would use only very modest because andrew will mean to the program won ten minutes
11:12 am
party fun to be a fascinating character. you're very kind i wanted to get the thing to think the first train of provinces that will be back. sells. stick. eye. welcome
11:13 am
back to the second segment of today's pro when he on the town while the compost report will continue our competition with the student of mine who is currently the program host would reveal the taiwan international rti angela talking about you know collecting sounds mean come on you know i know you thing the repeal of the deal program host and the rti for many years. the twenty two first became interested in opening collecting accent as well be a kind of the beginning of my it'll fascination with sounds you
11:14 am
can probably haven't seen in two thousand on high three lk two thousand three thousand four and i had basically i had gone to china in the head stayed in a gene for a year and when i came back from dating back to taipei. martin went back into miles up the radio station and body. i started hearing all these sounds that i remembered from when i lived in taiwan before i come to china. a new and in many ways you know they're in their similarities between taiwan and china but they're a lot of differences as well in a lot of those settling differences or audio difference is really kind of struck me as i came back into my job in radio so i've been so i started to collect them no not have to point out that there is some serious sound recording artists who have played professional equipment is that's not me. i hope to have to be a little bit you know here and it's something god cannot have great respect for them than that you know the ability to do field recording something of love to do learn how to do
11:15 am
but for me. i've always known that it be that the idea of collecting sounds is more of a hobby. and then something that i can use to share with other people. so i always envision how is it so it can help me. tell the stories that i wanted for an audience that said repent your hands i start off with that and then obviously this is spread out and now everytime i hear something like that the enlightened been recorded yet. believe me and she let me you go around the city in the towns where there are times of difficulty of people leaking a bit differently deal with this guy going a little wonky at the temple was seeing his own communities have collected this is a guaranteed every experience that all the time all the time in on end and i understand that because you know you know it's not everyday you see some guy and especially if the foreigner who's doing something quite unusual in your bets. and i i'd try to be incognito about
11:16 am
who has guided the stealth about it has been coughing fit. record when nobody's watching. because the problem with young people discovering what you're doing is they say something. and then i recorded his own hands he said he would be doing ok well you know what would you just said i have that on tape it is effectively covered up by the end of this different from p taking pictures and you know when you take pictures. you may be asking when taking picture of but i'm still taking that picture there but you're not in the picture so it's it's kind of fun things to navigate through nineteen i try to be is the stealth about it is possible in others but there's also other things to note that things like of motor scooters or toxic banks for her cell phone rings and it seemed to permeate into their clutches. courts happens quite a bit and i wanted to bring any id. it is the same everywhere is just
11:17 am
different sounds that are affecting your record you don't hear it. i'm sure given the state's you'd also have tons of cell phone rings in a new different weeds. this is going to see into me when you go around clicking sounds that people can answer you go mr. whoa what you doing this and what's the purpose namely to do this i mean whatever time you fill pages with the sound of looking for haven't people can collect it in place from taiwan. may i state it feels. iran like that. as some like this ever had. eight sometimes i try not to state it because a lot of times and a sound stage it is you can tell it's not but that it didn't happen properly heated spa or the way would in real life marketing example there is a very funny movie. our very first episode from here to stay there and we go into this market place and this is the title of marketplaces
11:18 am
market prices are awesome for collecting sounds in for meeting people and immense love to talk the best interviews the most iron plate interviews and often happen if markets it's very problematic. so we let this marketplace and there is some that this wasn't enough maybe it is on the northeast coast i think was in the b team sent in and out. we go up to this the wayward recording all these different sounds and we taught this. this one wonderful woman in his eyes he's stopping me. and she's like me she sees me coming in i do i explain what i did to so she isn't it strange. but you know the camera behind it it's starting to get some things up. and i can i explain that you know my co hosts the cheese doesn't tonight she loves to record some to swap the two weekends ago and she's recording its ugly head. i've discovered there are located on to the right and had to keep
11:19 am
the heat yet explained in his recording the sounds and he's getting the summer talking to me. this is aching all over the images of extra topping south korea. it's really nice to see takes the knife out and is no need of the top lock and cheese is kind of like. we said yes if you can hear me cousins know me there is nothing to do it to be topped. yes i did she bring out the principles of truth the whole week we report the guts of reacting topping to be the beginning. this is such a lovely woman when she wanted to help out and i kinda think. the bn should probably also realizes of the little bit different. i would have learned of the engine has collected over two thousand files of different sounds so drunk i want one was sounding sounds impression that most white at the start by practicing it that is to the other sounds not all of them are or aren't bike actual thousand tv clips of people talking in interviews and some unusable
11:20 am
announcement of activities have yet to categorize them it wasn't that into big things of these yet it is halfway over thousands of them in on it and use this fascinating sounds everywhere you turn eight. i love traditional sounds of love songs the temples of people doing you know traditional things lost arts in taiwan umm i love before they hit the capital of sounds that are connected to people it's said that if you hear a sound and then you automatically think of a person already know his or her story. that makes us so much more interesting free sample. i think the guys itself. it is easy easy guide to either someone see that quote miss rice paul says in a lot a lot of times the car will make this clicking sound to cut cut cut cut cut it in the aisle. i'll update as i love taking naps on that recording and playing it for people asking he knew what
11:21 am
the sun and its allies as people and generally remembered and then only one person died. i know that is that's it that's what the seller in and for me the reason why the seller was this guy mr wong. do i use to be near the agents on the mrt station and i haven't seen him in awhile some. i am most concerned about. does this with a ben ten years ago on his arty title but this time but the note she told me about this story about hockey it was richly doing business with a friend in them that this is kind of fell through and then he turned to selling. while she is in at the time he had no idea that the rest is like this could be spent selling its traditional dessert. when i heard him saying it sounds like ahh. what at what a heartbreaking story in an innocent you know the sound has accompanied him for thirty years. his head from the point where he did have a unit of the brewery had to be a given that obviously this was all the time is the point an easy in and i said that this was the sound of broken
11:22 am
dreams wrapped in its tracks it's when you think of a sound is the thing connected to a person takes on a whole different level of meaning of course. and then journal note the following questions a fair question but what would you think your meal opinion. this discount that this represents come on out it's a great question. i knew that winning is good because i know there's an answer it's hard to whittle taiwan down to one to one specific sounds awesome. i have to get back to doha what had caused the two segments of the year ronaldo who suffer it. over the years the opal clicking sounds from taiwan were some of the places that you feel you've been to a day you never did prior to the collection of sound while for example some of the temples and denise ago for example the phone call to
11:23 am
fight record this oldie do go there to collect sounds that sort of places that have been to yet in a society that the league this year. this is so the team ever in these places yet you know i'm over the last ten years specifically the clock sounds. i actually haven't gone to too many places just to collect sounds ok because i actually bring my tape recorder with me all the time it's the taxi my bag right now. ok so whenever i hear something i'm ready to record it but you know there's been some fascinating some moments of on tv about keeping it simple the time i spend a lot of time recording in thinking don't you come to him and that somewhere that i'd never been and still don't think baby three or four years ago which is strange because i think every every foreigner in taiwan is good because it is about as the southern tip of taiwan and the beaches or not. that was very fortunate how about a week to spend there looking around it and
11:24 am
experiencing the place isn't i was invited there by the appeal and county governments had to do some walking into a taxi record songs from an almond. when i was down there and i was very very lucky to meet the owner of a cafe. and i will eat when he introduced me to his whole group ofnd then they brought it to some amazing places and i they introduce me to move on tindall was that are one of the people in the mood and village which is of one tribe village is on the mood and i think incident at the table and did a lot of recording their own. when i met this fascinating guy called to do so. who is a moon shaped loop lately. it's this and i recorded the sound of him and claim that the esteemed enlisted clinton. i remember when i was sitting there and listening to him playing. um we are so close or closer than you and i are sitting right now i am i i could feel
11:25 am
the entire energy of his heartbreaking story pouring out through his senior three is playing the lute. does he have a very awesome. based on stories one time when his car which is quite yet and heres the officer put his stuff and i can feel the sin that we did like a minute of him starting to play and didn't seem like i had tears streaming down my face and like to try to hold the recorder in. and on. that was on his own deal with some interesting racing right into you you know those credits hear your song. yes we need to take another break on the program will be like that
11:26 am
it is. is. steve the sea the welcome back to today's program he'll become the look on the host prequel will continue our competition with
11:27 am
mist and ryan was clearly a program host would repeal caught one international rt hon. angela top of the different stories from the collection of sounds that you have come over the years and then came the with it you know some other stories that you may have experienced. yes jerry i was just thinking about another up older gentleman units i e i feel really strong connection with with older people in taiwan that i interviewed because some of them. you know when they're talking to you does even in the sound of her voice. you can hear the history or you can hear the connection to the door instead their stories of the album at their past life we have a go. and on. i remember there is this other one time. i use to create some postcards that i still create a similar programs computer the grounds of its basically giving people a feeling for a sense of place or person within. you know short bit like two minutes three minutes in and out. i
11:28 am
created this one some postcard that was based on the underground tunnel near near national taiwan university in seoul underground walkway in. every time i'm going to dinner. i would share this like it sound like temple meads click through this music. you know everytime i walk down there especially this summer was really hot outside and windy outside and he can walk down the stairs and it's cooler down in that in the underground tunnel to hear this music. get this feeling that it was like walking into the underground temple. it's a totally different kind of feeling year. it's a very calm kind of like the atmosphere was not. and there is a guy who was sitting there on time so we'd all been debated felt like this was his temple because the music is playing the music in tucson to come in and so i kind of you know felt like everytime i walk down there for two minutes i was in the skies temple and
11:29 am
so i'd recorded the sound of your footsteps. well first the traffic outside in the footsteps going on walking through the night of real time so i didn't stop when it's kept going. you can hear the music getting louder and louder when quieter letters in the footsteps of them in the traffic. and i i just love that i love the idea that the sky had transformed the space. a it was kind of like you share it with all of us since it's a completely different stories the only experience they'll come here with others you will experience my half going to the underground tunnels in other parts of taipei the only different is because of this one guy becomes our opinion so that was i created that just forgive me i dont think ill ever. we sure did know he's another guy who haven't seen in awhile when sending this to the editors but the theory that the applicant and attached a lot of people including myself of course fascinated you might want to be doing clicking sounds from taiwan
11:30 am
then neil sheehan did you know with friends and the launch. but the teacher ever think about getting to know the old pie using this opportunity to help by sharing it with your audience is good at getting to know the taiwanese culture and to field its own so how was it because a lot of people with no dry history take photographs in a local to the sights and sounds of things they can learn about the taiwanese culture. your scene is believing. you know people have to use a different game altogether different scents. you know trying to get to know that i won these especially the contemporary companies called in for example if the electric bill. i've taken all the old paris hilton us and paid for handling things in your living will. did you ever think about your experience in such an angle you getting to know the local culture through the collection to stay
11:31 am
absolutely any misses this is bend my knee had a very very fortunate discoveries sarandon are unique to me i saw they had never thought i would do know um and i get so grateful that you know just a job in radio and then i have discovered this new patch and it's it's enabled me to conceive or hear a completely different i want and i wouldnt you know. next year otherwise. and i think whatever you put yourself in a situation where you do something you're not used to doing it healthier. i'm also very official percentage in human beings in general are official people of goa vacation we take photos and so we come back we looked for a photo albums. it's an eerie need to experience the abnormalities that was going to restaurant week to produce different than i would love to knit this syrup in the face with it than i did a great player you know i received the best way to appreciate it if you're into we will share with people being here. taste for
11:32 am
the past. what did the trick had to share yours. yes you're seeing what you have in common with other people ah but i think when the people that i have been when smith have kind of tried to steer taiwan the way that i've heard a bomb had and reported to be similar experiences and that they weren't expecting to see things that they saw as well as hear things that they heard i mean when you need to approach something from a different angle and you get different understanding of this of course intended to show the doorknob from here to there with my vision impaired co hosts is this aikido people say that i'd taken him around taiwan that's that's nonsense. i just arrived. they are taking me on this amazing adventure where i'm forced to experience one of the same way they are. that takes me out of my element in unforeseen think you know what this unit sets and or a cd when they're in this environment. what are they feeling with a searing new
11:33 am
knowing that his ankle that is really you don't need to use this phrase to open my eyes. of course we live and the mule throughout this experience and clicking sounds. humans have come across the different ethnic groups in the long and then dove for example if you mention about some of the inti students people who built it tries to get into couple that if invite neil variety of dialects that they can't be exposed to this post will tell you little meal and some background about the culture the history of town. how absolutely no i i pride myself in it and trying to be a good student of languages as you know the law dressed in taiwan. the more i realize now that the languages i speak in on me i've tried to speak mandarin and that's the chorus to open been very active very fortunate to board it relatively quickly and has studied the hardness of the meal difficult language to come to a lot of repetitive piano right into it. i've had a lot of time to
11:34 am
also learned that you know one of the things i've noticed reviews tv show is news that up by taiwanese this is pretty terrible but you look on his own with the accumulation of time and yes i hope so tonight when i first came in so it took six was a taiwanese an idea i was really thinking about time that i wanted to learn all i would say i believe that if you have a basis in mandarin in in the cellar little doubt that helps the boy from an arm. i found it incredibly frustrating that it's mostly because you really need to wear when you're a child in the door when you're in the environment and at times been thinking a lot of that this behavior to the hill you have to be surrounded by people feel that the deal sending me and what if with the language that i like to come out. oh absolutely and silly and cute as ending the show and they were come across people who speak primarily taiwanese can i feel like. do they come back
11:35 am
to taipei it like watson soap opera has never been to karaoke and scenes of the taiwanese songs to really build that up i was an act of kindness to him but i'm confident that with the passage of time doing you can chill for more. a united before the new penal colonies in the fall evening. kakak looking for to that day and i can come back on it rather well it will still know that you have been through it in stride. he known county. and this and we have spent a lot of time with them. same with this story. asher silly actually what i ate. for some image on the radio. mom i was very fortunate to meet a number of aborigines number of indigenous people of primarily from the prima tried it or not i don't use it and i was with incredible is i don't know how in just minutes to meet the other ten family. but lake. everybody
11:36 am
in the family has now come out with an album you know we have a wonderful time sitting in class he's only a few dots on the whole extended family all extended family tiny alone. going to name our new and indeed they've all won no awards for their work in when did the golden melody awards in the time and that none of them to come out with albums either side while the lucky charm to it i think it's going to stay there all really good seat and yes i did this happen in a universe that it seemed everyone you know. he did his background was an amazing singer and on but you know. being friends with them and kind of having been taken into their family i don't has become intrinsically that not long village has become like a second home for the exams and so whenever i have a vacation or alexa time i always get the bags that i know that i had to bite me and japanese. that's about a
11:37 am
rod's a year or your mom's family's thousand and eight a second house basically an arm in arm and a pen with them for him probably fifteen years. anna has a long time experience all of the different kind of markers of life from birth to death to do everything in between and it's. i mean it's it's it's my family it's it's it's for me it's become second nature to be ok. we also understand that you have come to turn he worked with him during the show with the some of that spirit i would never admit to having a dirty look it has forced into going to share it. well you know i say i like to hold the mike and i had never done that and i don't lie. i have. i was originally planning on going to of another village isn't seen two of the events of those cult novel that's a very good friends who also like family parents well that from the title track the end of my friend yet when her
11:38 am
family in red has plenty of helping our union committee working with the kids in the ot is open to teaching her. i'm kind of hoping with them with a lot of their different products like they did they sell fruits and vegetables to the city to help local farmers. my friend works with people who have disabilities and illnesses like a terminal illnesses. if she's doing so much busy work i was thinking you know i could come and become a part of this. and then he helped heal my first conversation with or just drag on until like i keep going back to continue the conversation i haven't actually started one we lead a team that entered this process i served the court and six. you know my second nature to the master recording things is in these recordings actually went on to be of great use to them and their family. that's when i when to take the final polls on the program to gain will be
11:39 am
back pack . i do. it is. is
11:40 am
steve. . actor the final part of its proven beyond a while let me host to recall what will continue and hopefully wrap of this fascinating conversation with mr andrew ryan who screw me a program hosted with radio taiwan international rti. and you were talking about throughout the course of the program the end of the above experiences you had the collecting sounds throughout europe and parts of taiwan. then this coupled with a bite you in the job when you go program hosts with radio taiwan international poll had to be doing one of the programs they used to in the current western in nineteen eighty nine. ok so i guess i've been there for low fifties years davidson. it sounds when
11:41 am
you're amazed by it. in our everyday life. i did many programs are with this piece meets west. ok these meet us up with another plan words this crisis and of course i would manage and it's about food scene is frightening to think i want yet as in the state's west to. i hope co host with the gi leo is to spend the day working together for about twelve years when the gap so that we raise the head of the program and we realize that all of our topics are related to food. tangentially so we change the name it seems that the men kept posting but now with two. and if it's the end of the book rather than feast meets west. i have my summer program where i share it i want something that's called here to the ground so in awe of so it's there all tangentially related to your embassy to hear from here to there so those are the two main ones that we also host a program called here in taiwan we are in the nzru and i
11:42 am
