i wanted's time now for the latest in business news. economists in japan are shifting from a batch of information from the employment situation to company business results. yi uchida joins us with more. >> there's a lot going on with japan right now. its peek earning season, for example, more on that later. we have just heard from government officials who have just put out the state of the economy. they say the jobless rate edged up in ju officials at the internal affairs industry said the unemployment rate rose by 0.2 to 3.7%.

it was it was the highest level in june. the officials say there were more jobs in the medical care, public welfare and manufacturing sectors. let's see how inves tors are reacting to those numbers. >> let's have a look at how the nikkei and the topix are reacting for this tuesday morning. both are in the positive. 15,586 for the nikkei. now, 2 nikkei ended at a six-month high on monday. with a relatively weaker yen, we may see further gains today. we'll see if that continues. there were some major events

this week that may move further back. there still are concerns with policies to combat deflation may be running into some head winds. analysts are debating with the increase and con suchgs tax rate in april is really playing through in domestic demand. case in point was nissan's rate. the car maker said it's unit sales in japan were down 0.5% from the first quarter a year earlier. quite a lot to take if for investors.

>> reporter: one of the main attractions is a replica of the japanese experiment module kibo. astronauts at the intern space station have used the lab since 2008 to carry out experiments. in march, this man took over as commander of the international space station. he became the first japanese astronaut to lead the or bitting lab. a government panel is trying to decide what role japan should play in the space station after 2020. this spokesperson says s exploration is more relevant than ever. in february, they sent up a satellite that can track rain and snowfall around the globe. scientists hope it will help them better predict extreme weather such as typhoons.

investigate the evolution of the solar system. organizers want to show off past accomplishments but they are looking to the future. one idea for making space travel more affordable and more accessible is building a space elevator. japanese scientists are trying to develop that idea with carbon nanotubes, cables designed to transport a vehicle without a rocket. organizers hope exhibits like this will inspire the next generation of space explorers. it's time to explore the weather with robert spetta. it seems people in eastern c are dealing with rain an floods. what's the latest? >> we have been seeing is that a widespread flood threat across eastern china. this goes back a week.

when matmo came through it dropped a tremendous amount of rainfall into eastern china. in the last 24 hours in the cloud cover, the problem is this is falling on saturated ground. this is the past week total rainfall accumulation. you can see down here towards taiwan, matmo dropped a tremendous amount of rain. in eastern china, you have been seeing showers towards the of shanghai where we have seen rainfall. it's been resulting in the threat of flooding. i want to show you video most recently of a rescue effort. was forced into play because of flooding. they rescued people on two buses on sunday. the heavy rain caused a flash flood in a low lying section of a road here in the capital. most people abandoned their vehicles and fled to safety. but the bus passengers,

including elderly and children waited for rescue. good news, no injuries from that story out there. that is the good news coming out of that. flood threat still going to be there, if you see showers pop up through the coming days. to the north, clear across japan. in the southern japanese islands, that will change up as we look through midweek. we have a tropical depression. we have two tropical depressions out here in the western pacific. first this one. it's not going to be a major typhoon. it will bring winds across the southern japanese islands and towards taiwan. this is a monsoonal storm system. as a very large wind field but it's not consolidated that much. a lot of people are going to see

gusty winds. it's likely going to be persistent over several days. this one could become a tropical storm as well pushing over the islands. high surf advisories issued. possibly tropical storm warnings but you will see windy conditions as we look ahead into wednesday. could be 65 kilometers per hour. tropics active in the western pacific. as we look towards the americas, we have been talking about the severe weather in the northeast. we had tornado reported in boston. on your sunday night into monday, tornado reported in tennessee. destroyed ten homes there. this is a photo out of michigan. now as we look ahead into monday, severe weather threat. back toward the west, we have the monsoon collided with a boundary along the eastern slopes of the rockies. in denver recently, report of two tornadoes out here as well. no report of any casualties. still a developing situation. you have the heavy rainfall. there is a flash flood threat oust that. in california, you need the

rain. it's been very dry out here. there's been numerous wildfires erupting the last several days. as we look towards europe, a little more information on this later on, but what we have been watching is that severe weather in central europe. the heat across the north, well above average. look at warsaw, up to 32 on your tuesday. here is the extended outlook.

this was the seat of ancient irish kings for seven centuries. st. patrick baptized king aengus here in about 450 a.d. in around 1100, an irish king gave cashel to the church, and it grew to become the ecclesiastical capital of all ireland. 800 years ago, this monastic community was just a chapel and a round tower standing high on this bluff. it looked out then, as it does today, over the plain of tipperary, called the golden vale because its rich soil makes it ireland's best farmland. on this historic rock, you stroll among these ruins in the footsteps of st. patrick, and wandering through my favorite celtic cross graveyard, i feel the soul of ireland.
