lighten the tone of china's international naoki makita, nhk worl police i remain on high alert in the xinjiang uyghur autonomous region. an attack on government buildings and police stations on monday reportedly killed dozens of people. an nhk crew arrived in the city of kashgar on wednesday. it's about 200 kilometers away from yarkand county where the incident occurred. the area appeared calm, but armed police were at positions throughout the city. checkpoints had been set on highways and blocked vehicles from entering the central area. internet access has been cut off in parts of the region. the state-run xinhua news agency says dozens of han chinese and muslim uyghurs were killed or injured in the assault. it reported security police shot and killed dozens of the attackers.
