>> glad to have you with us obaon this edition of "newsline." it's august 15th, i'm catherine kobayashi in tokyo. iraq's prime minister has finally bowed to pressure from inside and outside his country. nouri al malaki says he's resigning. he says he'll support prime minister designate, haider al abadi, who is also a shia. he was tapped on sunday to form the next government, but until the announcement he had refused to step aside. he said he has no intention of

seeking other posts. many iraqis are hoping his successor can form a national unity government with sunnis and kurds and hope those forces can join forces in the fight against the militants. president obama said air strikes to help other iraqis threatened by islamic militants will continue. >> we broke the isil siege of mount sin jar. we helped vulnerable people reach safety and helped save many innocent lives. >> obama said a small team of americans checked conditions on the mountain. and they found food and water have been reaching those in need. he said every day, thousands of people have been taken to safety and u.s. forces have increased the delivery of military assistance to iraqi and kurdish forces fighting you the insurgents.

tensions are high on the streets of ferguson in the u.s. state of missouri. confrontations between demonstrators and police 280 trucks left the western russian town of voronezh on thursday after a rest and refueling stopover. russians say they're carrying humanitarian supplies. the ukrainian government says it has not been given detailed information about the cargo or where it's heading. the government noted on wednesday that it can accept the aid if the trucks are under the control of the international committee of the red cross. russia has said it will cooperate. fighting between ukrainian government forces and pro-russian militants has resulted in shortages of food, water, and medicine in the main cities of donetsk and luhansk.

government leaders in guinea have declared the ebola outbreak a health emergency. they're taking new measures to try to stop the virus from spreading. president alpha conde said those measures include stricter border controls and a ban on the movement of bodies between towns. he said anyone suspected of being infected will be isolated until tests show they're clear. four west african nations have now declared the epidemic an emergency. the world health organization says the number of people who've died has reached 1,069. guinea has reported more deaths than any other country. some researchers suspect the outbreak began with a 2-year-old guinean child who died in december. russia is poised to send

>> they're urging government leaders to put in place more preventive measures. tensions are high on the streets of ferguson in the u.s. state of missouri. confrontations between demonstrators and police continue after the gunning down of a black teenager. the fatal shooting by police have sparked violent protests since last saturday. police fired tear gas to disperse the crowds. demonstrators were throwing rocks at officers. local media report multiple eyewitness accounts, saying the officer repeatedly fired at the teen who had his hands in the air. those eyewitnesss include another youth who was with the

victim at the time. many locals say the shooting is proof of racism by police. president barack obama tried to defuse the situation. >> now is the time for healing. now is the time for peace and calm on the streets of ferguson. now is time for an open and transparent process to see that justice is done. >> obama added he has asked the fbi to investigate the shooting. the demonstrations show no sign of ending. they could escalate to other parts of the country. last year, protests spread nationwide over a shooting death of an unarmed black youth in florida. the shooter, who was a former neighborhood watch volunteer, was found not guilty of murder.

manufacturers in china have long been accused of copying foreign goods from expensive watches to fine wine. but authorities are cracking down on those who steal ideas as well. >> reporter: this hospital has been scaring people since it opened in june. but the haunted house bears more than a passing resemblance to one in a neighboring country. japan's amusement park opened its general hospital in 2003 and the similarity doesn't stop at their names. both are designed to have horror seekers walk through a dark hospital. the japanese amusement park have ask chinese local authority to investigate the legality of the haunted house. they found the chinese operator didn't have a license to run the facility. the firm also posted false statements on its website. they're advertising also claimed they had a "guinness" world record.

the operator told nhk in june it had done nothing wrong. >> translator: we invited a japanese designer to make this house. we didn't use fuji q's name to promote the attraction. >> reporter: the company was recently fined about $45,000. china has been criticized for copyright infringement by animation characters and theme parks. this theme park has a character resembling snow white in the disney films. a life-size replica of the great sphinx of giza was built and torn down after the egyptian authorities complained to the united nations that it violated international regulations. the haunted house is only the tip of a very large iceberg. there are still countless commercial goods and the facilities in china that seem to fall foul of intellectual property laws, but the punishment handed out in this case suggest authorities are getting serious about the problem. takeshi togawa, nhk world, beijing. the country is seeing a higher proportion of elderly. a quarter of the population is 65 or older and the birthrate is low. ed number of children born to a woman over her lifetime has dropped to 1.43, one of the lowest levels in the world. and many working mothers are struggling to get the help they

treatments for the births of at least nine babies before disappearing. authorities say the doctor conducted in-vitro fertilization without the required permit. >> translator: we will seek an arrest warrant if the doctor doesn't report for questioning. >> the babies were found in an apartment near bangkok owned by a japanese man. the man's lawyer said his client fathered the babies using surrogate mothers. the man denied there were any legal problems. he is said to have left thailand. investigators say dna tests show the children are likely to have the same father. analysts with the south korean military say rockets from south korea are flying longer each time they're launched. they say five rockets on thursday flew as far as 220 kilometers. a spokesperson for south korea's joint chiefs of staff said the north fired the projectiles from wonsan. they flew towards the sea of japan. north korea has test-fired rockets in march, june, and july. rockets with a range of 220 kilometers can hit seoul and central parts of south korea.

military analysts say the artillery could become a serious threat for south korea and the u.s. forces stationed there. they say it's hard to detect launch preparations of rockets, making it difficult to intercept them. the two countries plan to start a joint military exercise next week. pyongyang has reiterated its call for seoul to cancel the exercise. north korea's state news agency published a statement from the committee for the peaceful reunification of korea. it said the improvement of relations between the two koreas would be impossible with the presence of the u.s. in the south. it also said failure to cancel the joint drill could push the two sides to the brink of war, and it urged seoul to show sincerity toward improving relations.

states recognizes japanese sovereignty over the islands. japanese prime minister shinzo abe said the drills are totally unacceptable, and government officials launched a strong protest. abe has been building a personal relationship with russian president vladimir putin. putin is scheduled to visit japan in the autumn, but some government officials believe the trip will have to be postponed. others believe they should work on improving ties. earlier this month, japan and other group of seven countries imposed additional sanctions on russia over the situation in ukraine. in response, senior officials in moscow postponed talks with their japanese counterparts scheduled for later this month. russian officials have reacted sharply to japan's protest. a foreign ministry spokesperson said the islands legally belong to russia, and russians can decide where to hold their own military drills. the spokesperson said the drills are routine and not aimed at japan, so the country has

next year, germany will host the first award cup in frankfort. the sport was introduced to japan five months ago. more than 2,500 people have already tried the sport. they quickly learned the first rule. if you fall down, it's hard, very hard, to get back up.

>> i couldn't resist giving it a try. so armed with a small camera, i suited up. it was a lot more difficult to play than i'd expected. >> being knocked down so many times, i quickly found out that the sport can be a bouncing good time for people at any age. judging by the smiles on their faces, the sport seems unlikely to burst like a bubble any time soon.

people around the world have been learning origami for generation, now designer is introducing the craft to others. >> reporter: tokyo is no stranger to left field fashion, but this show was really one of a kind. all the garments were made out of paper folded in patterns derived from the traditional technique of origami. they are the creations of an artist from colombia. she has been using origami techniques in her work for over

20 years. she was first introduced to origami as a young child by her father, who learned the techniques from japanese immigrants to columbia. she began creating clothing from origami. she is known as a specialist. she has also shown her works in europe. during a visit to japan, she held a workshop for origami enthusiasts. she told them she likes to focus deep inside herself before she starts to fold.

to express this idea, she asks the participants to cover their eyes before they begin. if everyone had followed her instructions correctly, they would all have ended up with the same shape. but in fact, the results were very different. paper teaches us that we are all special. by expressing our inner selves, we give richness to our lives. some present her with an original origami rug they have made. >> translator: wow. wow. >> reporter: a week after arriving in japan, the work of creating the garments for her shows is in full swing. the designs are not planned in advance. they are spontaneous works,

which only come to life when they are worn by the model. >> translator: it's no good. let's get rid of it. i want to show her face. >> reporter: the show starts. here in the homeland of origami, many people have turned out to see the creations, which will only be able to be worn once. the theme of the show is love. >> translator: it's an art form without words, just using pure, white, folded paper. i think it's profound.

just impacting the new england area, it's also over there toward southern quebec and into ontario and back earlier this week, i will show you some photos. this was out of detroit, back on monday, where you saw some record breaking rainfall. the storm system tracked off toward the east around the washington, d.c. and york area and it brought some record breaking rainfall. and now i want to show you a video coming out of maine, specifically around portland, where we are once again seeing record breaking rainfall. actually, over 500 millimeters

let's look back toward the west though, because we have another storm system coming into the picture. this one's bringing severe storms across the northern rockies, even over toward saskatchewan in alberta, thunderstorm warnings, here the overnight hours and now extending out through thursday night, friday morning. you're going to be expecting that. also, the north american monsoon continues to bring showers over toward the southwest, so denver, don't be surprised if you see some thunderstorms out here on your friday. let's move over toward europe, talking about the severe weather, two spots we really want to note here, the first over toward the low countries in eastern portions of the british isles. we have been seeing the storms to the netherlands, funnel clouds, back towards the east, we are seeing the biggest clash of air masses, cool air funneling in from the west ahead of this, warm weather, seek those severe thunderstorms line up over toward western portions of russia, eight center meter in diameter hail reported here, croatia, the coastal areas, severe lightning, damaging the home, large hail reported in nearby locations as well and those temperatures will continue

to cool down. high, 23, vienna, 23, but ahead of it, staying hot and muggy, athens up to 39 there on your friday. let's move to the other side of the world, down under, where we are still talking about the rainfall. this is good news actually, because farmers out here really need it. parts of new south wales and southern queensland, 75% below your average rainfall for the month of july. this is going to be ushering in more rain than what you really see over the entire months this coming weekend. some areas could see over 100 millimeters, widespread, about 37 millimeters. take a look at your three-day forecast, if you're in brisbane, you may be feeling it sydney by sunday, those thunderstorms will start to roll in. i'm gonna have more on this later on, but it is something i

want to talk about. we have a low that is pushing across south korea, bringing thunderstorms there, but also heavy precipitation being felt in western japan, kochi prefecture, saw the record breaking flooding last weekend, you have already seen over 100 millimeters, 150 millimeters in the past 24 hours. good news, tokyo, at least on your friday i partly cloudy skies, highs up to 33. here is the extended outlook.
