a vast number of large factories are operating 24 hours a day and such facility haves been increasing over the past several years. with work and income available, residents of dreams of becoming wealthy. the round-the-clock factories have boosted business for late-night eat ris and taxis who katerer to the workers. people's lifestyles are changing. >> as production increases and services prosper, the philippine economy continues to flourish.

this episode follows the residents of manila who are working through the night for a brighter future. in the 1960s, the philippine economy was ranked as the most progressive in southeast asia. the country-built infrastructure faster than any of its neighbors. due to plilt kal instability, development came to a standstill. all of that began to change around five years ago.

many factories are operating around the clock. currently, over 60,000 people work in factories in the philippines. lifestyles are being drastically transformed. janet switched from selling cosmetics to working nights at a fact ri. her income has now risen by 50%.

as the eldest daughter, she's been helping and saved up little by little and was able to open an internet cafe next door to her home last year. the cafe sales alone exceed jarn et's former salary as a sales rep.

>> janet's workplace is about 20 minutes on foot from her home. many round-the-clock factories employ a three-shift system. the roads get jammed with cars just before 10:00 p.m. when night shift typically begins. near an industrial complex housing 31 factories, a bus terminal is in full operation. the terminal is the destination for a network of different roots from all over met ro manila bringing people here 24 hours a day.

the man ufacturing industry begn expanding when a stable political administration gave investors a positive impression of the country. the philippines can also lower labor costs compared to most other asia nations. and the high birthrate meant there were no concerns of a labor shortage any time soon. so the economy grew by more than 7% last year. business in the local shopping center near to this factory district has begun to expand. moegs of these eat ris used to close at 9:00 p.m., but now they

stay open all night. the search has seen a huge increase in customer who is eat late. cab and penny cab drivers also come here to eat.

>> it's 10:30 and the first round of profitable time slots for this noodle shop has just befun. this shop specializes in a local noodle soup dish called mame. at around 50 yents a serving, the dish is also a popular takeout food.

>> this lady is off to have a drink and ebb joy the noodles with her colleagues. the store quickly fills up and 50 servings of mame are sold in under 30 min you wills. shi opened the store about 10 years ago. her full scale, late-night operations started three years ago. her seven daughters work as her staff.

the family lives in the same building as the store. their total living space measures around 40 square meters. when everyone lies down to sleep, there's almost nowhere to walk. april joy si cil io works all night seven nights a week. she is the only one in university and is the pride of her mother.

the family store stays open until their stock of money sells out. local eat ris aren't the only ones that stay open late these days. this international fast food chain now has 60% of its doors in the philippines open 24 hours. taxi driver manny delacruz has been driving around for more than 10 years.

he knows exactly where passengers are likely to be at almost any time. on this night, he's on his way to a well-known drinking area. many used to be a truck driver. but taxi driving is more lucrative.

manny then heads to the second largest business district in the philippines chlts i's filled with huge shopping malls and luxury hotels. recently, the philippines has been blossoming as a place for business source out sourcing or bpo. business source call crepters are very common thanks to many being fluent in english. >> this particular firm is currently selling health supplements for an american company. on this night, they are targeting customers in new york.

due to the 12-hour time difference, workers send out 1200 e-mails each. they get paid a basic wage plus a bonus based on what their team members make in sales. some of them can make double the national wage. >> he was a call center agent. he has me as an account manager. >> marissa's team boasts one of the highest sales records in the company. >> we had already been doing this for over five years. so, yes, our body had been well-adjusted.

the industry is really growing fast. well, i strongly believe that maybe one day, maybe next year, i'll be having my own car. and big money. of course, i'll be able to put my child in a better school. >> business hours depend on which part of the world their customers are in. around mid night, the shopping spree starts to settle down. for joy, it's a precious time to study for college.

my whole family is supporting me. especially my mother.

>> thanks to the help of her daughters, she has been able to extend business hours. she's been able to send joy back to college.

>> a typical schedule is 11:00 to 8:00 in the morning. but i asked my boss to early out. >> at and 5:00 a.m., morning shift workers start leaving for the factories.

the town starts bustling with people even before the break of dawn. at the various eat ris, people buy takeout breakfasts. one-third of mila's mame noodle soup is left. once it's all gone, they'll close. thanks for the morning shift workers hungry for some breakfast and those buying takeou takeouts, the remaining soup sells briskly. mila and joy are unable to hide their fatigue from the rong hours they've been working.

14 hours after opening, the mame noodle soup is all gone. the night sales exceed 45 u.s. dollars.

>> i think i'm a lucky person. yes, i'm lucky because god has given me the chance to make undergrad. so i want to -- my mother has a business. so i want to -- yes, a good business.

manny is also at the end of his 14 hour shift. it's the ernd of the night shift at the fact ris, too. janet makes her way home.

but, first, she has to start uch the computers at her internet cafe. next year, janet has plans to open a second internet cafe. around 6:00 p.m. u.s. time, the call center starts getting inquiries from customers. it's filled with the voices of operators speaking english.

they said they'll try to have that delivered in 14 business days otherwise, they'll have a refund. how much did they charge you? >> we have some coffee downstairs. >> as everyone goes home, the team leader, marissa, still has somethinshe needs to do.

mrksz arissa graduated from university this march. but it was a long, hard struggle as she had to quit school in the first year for not being able to pay tuition and living expenses. she then began working at the call center and returned to school once she gained a stable inco for three years, she worked through the night and attended classes during the day. she's collecting her transcript of records, which she needs in ordser to take a licensing exam. >> i need to get my license by taking board exam.

study again master's and psychology. i achl planning on having clinical psychology which is sort of my dream. >> marissa plans to resign from the call center next year to concentrate on studying psychology. she won't have to worry about tuition this time as she's already saved enough from her night work. the nights in manilla and other asian cities are significantly changing. people are working diligently with dreams of a more prosperous and rewarding life. their hard work today could pave their hard work today could pave the way for a brighter tomorrow.
