6:00 pm
>> hello and welcome to "world news" coming to you live from dw in berlin. >> it's good to have you with us. these are our top stories. russian opposition leader, alexey navalny , is arrested on the way to an opt -- an unauthorized protest in moscow. >> indonesian officials say debris embodies have been found from the missing air asia plane. we will talk live to an aviation expert about what might have happened. >> in our end of your series examining the big stories of 2014 from our own correspondence, we look at turkey -- how much is democracy under threat there? >> welcome to the program. the anti-kremlin politician,
6:01 pm
alexey navalny , has been detailed by police after he violated house arrest to join the protests in moscow. the demonstration was over a guilty verdict against him and his brother in a controversial fraud case. >> two dozen other people were also detained as hundreds gathered in central moscow where the opposition leader called on russians to take to the streets against vladimir putin. >> we will find out more live from the russian capital, but first we have this report. >> one outspoken creek at harsh words for the judge who called his brothers jailing an attempt by russian authorities to intimidate him. >> i'm ashamed of what you are doing. why are you putting him in jail? what a disgusting act. this is being done to punish me even more. next prosecutors say the brothers embezzled hundreds of thousands of euros from a friend -- from a french cosmetics firm.
6:02 pm
the country filed -- the company filed a complaint that said they had not incurred losses. alexey navalny rose to prominence as a fierce opponent of the regime after running for position of mayor of moscow in 2013. he managed a surprising second-place finish. after tuesday's sentencing, he called for further protests against the kremlin. >> i call on everyone to take to the streets until those who torture innocent people have been removed. >> thousands of people answered his appeal and turned out to+ protest in front of the kremlin. he was also present defying house arrest and posting pictures of the rally on twitter. soon after, he was seized and is being held at home under police guard. >> let's get the latest from our
6:03 pm
correspondent. what can you tell us about the grounds under which they have detained him? >> he was arrested because he broke house arrest. he is still serving a five-year suspended sentence. he was found guilty in 2013 of embezzlement in a very similar and similarly controversial criminal case. next how has the government been responding to this new set of protest? >> that's right. there has been a massive presence of police here in moscow next to the kremlin. they were ready to crack down and that is what a did. they crackdown on protesters forcefully and arrested severa dozens, maybe hundreds of protesters throughout this evening.
6:04 pm
>> thank you for keeping us up-to-date on this developing story. >> for some background, we are joined in the studio by journalist that has been following the story for years. tell us more about him. he's a former yale university fellow, a mayor, a more -- a male role candidate, but does his support extend beyond moscow? >> that's a good question and i think you'll have to prove himself nationally. what we do know about him is that he appeals to a significant part of the moscow population. these are people who are internet savvy and upwardly mobile. he started as an anticorruption campaigner, exposing a shady deals inside companies. he did this using the internet very skillfully.
6:05 pm
in 2011, he made an appeal via the internet for the protests that were the biggest challenge to putin. >> he has always presented himself as a nationalist but has called for sanctios on some of putin's friends will stop how does that square? >> i don't think it's a contradiction. he and many other russian nationalists consider prudent to have usurped power in russia. he's using the power to benefit a group of friends through his nepotistic system, so i don't see a contradiction with the sanctions. on the other hand, he has said that given the choice he would probably not return crimea to ukraine. >> briefly, critics say the ruling against alexey navalny is clinically motivated as
6:06 pm
opposed to the case against the former oligarch now living in switzerland. next it's a valid comparison. he regards -- putin regarded him as the main challenger 10 years ago. he really came out of the blue, use the internet and has been able to organize a large portion of the population. >> let's move over now to asia where indonesian officials have confirmed the debris and bodies found in the java sea are from the air asia flight which went missing on sunday. >> the indonesian president has expresses deep condolences. he says every effort will be made to locate all the bodies. there were very emotional scenes as the news came in. >> after days of waiting came
6:07 pm
the awful certainty -- passengers relatives broke down in tears upon hearing bodies and wreckage had been found. indonesian television broadcast this the own for achieving corpses from the crash site. more and more pieces of debris have been spotted. the wreckage was found 160 kilometers southwest near the island of borneo, 10 kilometers from where the plane lost radio contact on sunday. crews have started recovering wreckage. the debris was identified as being from the missing aircraft. >> i have confirmed the area was where the plane crashed. and indonesian air force achilles aircraft spotted an object underwater that resembled an airplane.
6:08 pm
>> water in the area is only 60 meters deep. one priority is recovering the flight recorders which could provide crucial information on the reason the plane went down. >> what happened to this flight? we have more now on this. what were some of your initial impressions? does this look like pilot error or a technical problem? >> is too early to say and to judge here. chat rooms on the internet are full of speculation and there's one thing pointing out -- this is an aircraft that is highly sophisticated and highly computerized will stop it requires all of its outboard centers to work properly so the aircraft can be flown properly. we have seen similar accidents in the past. there was a tropical
6:09 pm
thunderstorm but we have had severe icing in this area. these are things that people should now look into and -- >> the site is not far from the flight path but it did take two days to find the debris. what this the location tell us about what might have happened? >> the search and rescue efforts were conducted in one area. they were looking toward the flight path. we don't know but hopefully these people died upon impact and not in the water. >> you mentioned the black boxes. he searches on for them. what kind of information will they give us? >> they are the only testimony so they will tell us why the pilot deviated from their
6:10 pm
original flight path and how the engines were functioning or if there was anything else not according to normal operation. >> thank you very much. >> authorities in albania say to sailors have been killed in an accident while trying to tell a car ferry that caught fire in the adriatic. police say the men were hit by a cable let snapped. >> at least 11 people have been confirmed dead in the accident. new questions are being raised about how exactly many people were on board that vessel with dozens still unaccounted for. >> the italian navy continues to search the waters around the ferry off the albanian coast. prosecutors have ordered the vessel to be brought to italy as part of a criminal investigation.
6:11 pm
>> as we have discovered, there were several illegal migrants hidden in the ship's hold. we fear once we set to work recovering the shipwreck, we will find more dead bodies. >> rescuer sale surviving passengers and crew have been lifted to safety from the ferry. many of those taken to the southern italian court have been describing the chaos that ensued after the fire broke out. >> we saw smoke coming out, so he grabbed lifejackets and came out. outside, we could not see anything because it was dark. you see was rough. the ferry is now being towed with high winds and rough seas continuing to slow the operation.
6:12 pm
>> is joining us now live is our correspondent following this story. the death toll keeps rising. is there any clarity about how many people were on board? >> no. the situation seems very unclear. the passenger manifest has discrepancies between the greek and italian sides and it is clear illegal migrants were on board and there is no clarity on the subject at all for the moment. >> what about survivors? what are they saying about how the crew handled the disaster? >> there has been considerablepcriticism about the crew and captain. people complain they were not given clear instructions and heard nothing from the captain
6:13 pm
and they were just left to their own devices. on top of that, the attempt to launch light craft from the beginning very quickly failed. very few people could get off the ship. >> this raises the question of do we have any idea whether this vessel was seaworthy in the first place? >> that will be the subject of criminal and civil trials. there have been suggestions there were a number of deficiencies recently. the owners of the ship say particularly a faulty fire door had been rectified. the ship was only five years old but undoubtedly there will be a lot of discussion on that particular point. >> thank you very much. >> in a separate story italy is
6:14 pm
sending two helicopters to meet a cargo ship thought to be carrying hundreds of migrants after a passenger sent a distress call that prompted a rescue mission. >> earlier greece dispatched ships to investigate the emergency call which said people on board were running out of food and water. but the captain told the baby -- told the navy no help was needed. >> four people have died and 40 have been injured in an accident in central germany. >> the vehicle was traveling on a snowy highway when it was struck by a car and fell down an indictment. passengers had been on their way to a new year's eve celebration. we are going to take a short break in on a comeback, we will tell you about some exciting new technology that could revolutionize modern medicine. >> 3-d printing to create a hard for a transplant. >> hard to believe.
6:15 pm
>> heroes of our age. glory lies in the stadium. kickoff hayes tribute with a youtube channel, reports and analysis. players, coaches fans will stop kickoff, now on youtube.
6:16 pm
>> welcome back. as the year draws to a close, we are looking back at the big stories that shaped this year. our series turns to turkey and the status of democracy. >> the president took over and spent much of 2014 trying to extend the powers of office. they move understandably argue -- outraged his tricks who say he's trying to impose an authoritarian form of government. >> he now has the presidential palace that was built without a construction permit on a nature reserve. but he's undeterred by critics. one of the first people he received in his new resident was vladimir putin. his opponent say draws inspiration from the russian president. >> he wants to change the regime
6:17 pm
and make out of turkey a system like in the united states and he wants to become that president so he wants to have full power. >> his party won a local elections and the presidency this year. a big majority in general elections would allow for changes to the constitution. some turks are alarmed by his efforts to interfere with the countries democratic and secular traditions. basic republican principles like the separation of religion and state would be abandoned and they want to start teaching ottoman turkey -- ottoman turkish in schools. >> we hope things will be better after the elections. >> turkey's relations with the european union is experiencing a low. the recent detentions of journalists is threatening accession talks, but that does not seem to bother the president. >> the turkish government does
6:18 pm
not care about brussels anymore. those people are eager to join the eu. but the turkish government is far away from the eu. >> 2015 is to become the year of his complete takeover, whether by elections or a referendum. he wants to create a presidential system stamped by a greater role of islam. the opposition is powerless and at odds will stop the internal political divisions in turkey are getting deeper will stop then there's the violence on the southeastern border of turkey. >> turkey has taken over a million syrian refugees and more a ride every day. yet a have then hesitant to pull out all the stops against islamic state. a disappointment to the kurds inside and outside turkey and western and arab nations
6:19 pm
fighting the extremists. >> to neighboring greece where voters have started the countdown to next month's early elections. they are due on january 25. >> the outgoing premise or has asked the president to his -- to dissolve element. they have warned greeks they will decide whether the country remains part of the eurozone. he accuses the opposition left this -- leftist for failing to agree to a new head of state. the vote is several weeks away, but traders are already very nervous at the stock exchange. >> worries over greece pulled the dax down for the day. not the kind of last trading day of the week they were hoping and wishing for here. but one of the questions is what happens should greece default or
6:20 pm
exit the euro? that's not the kind of thing inclined to raise the mood here. that was a serious burden for the last day of trading. the dax lost, but it's a new record high at the and of the year. people have every reason to be satisfied with this year. in between, the dax jumped several times over 10,000 points and with the help of the ecb they ignored crises like the ukraine conflict and the rapid decline in oil prices. there are hopes for 2015 and many think shares will increase with the help of central bank money. >> here comes the market numbers. >> the dax lost more than 1% but finished on a year-end high. euro stoxx 50 dropped by a
6:21 pm
percentage and a half. the dow jones, where they are still trading 17,966 and the euro is slightly up against the dollar. >> few things in the world of technology have generated more does in recent years than 3-d printers. and boy have they come a long way. scientists say they will be able to use 3-d printing to create human organs for implantation. >> one start up outside berlin is using the technology to make models of human hearts. their products are far from an implant ready but they are helping surgeons in exciting new ways. >> it might look like a cookie 10 but this professor is carrying a patient's heart, or at least a scale model of her heart. the model is made of soft plastic and comes from a 3-d printer. the patient's heart was scarred
6:22 pm
by earlier operations, making further surgery complicated. the cardiologist ordered a model of the heart to be fully prepared. >> i was surprised how detailed and fine the resolution is in the 3-d printing. you can really visualize very well what you can expect to find with a catheter. >> data comes from computer scans which make several hundred sectional images. a computer can then display a three-dimensional image of the heart. in special cases, the hospital is ordered to order a model of the heart despite the cost. >> the added value is that it is quite patient specific. you can hold it in your hands and see the sides of the ventricles and try out the devices you want to use in the patient. >> the data for another model
6:23 pm
heart has been gathered and saved. now the work is just getting. in his office, he examines the pictures from the scan and has to make his own layout. unlike with bones which show as white on the computer image, the computer is not able to automatically display the structure of inner organs. it is a difficult task. >> it took us about a month to make the first heart stopped now would we make the model, we can do it in 72 hours from the time of the scan to delivery of the model. >> the printing alone requires an entire day. he can also do brains. his newly formed company is continually taking on new challenges and constantly being approached with new tasks and business opportunities.
6:24 pm
>> we are just at the beginning. the models are just something to look at. you cannot implant them but short-term or long-term, we will have implantable printed things. >> that's not even very futuristic anymore. several research institutes are working mixing organic shells that's organic cells with the plastic materials that can later grow into an organ. >> a bang here, a crack there the occasional whistle of a rocket heading to explode in the heavens as the fuse burns down the old year, you hear the sound of fireworks all over germany. >> the closer we get to midnight the and more frequent they get. people are stocking up on pyrotechnics just to make sure the new year gets off to a bang. >> it's shortly before 7:00 in berlin and these people are waiting for fireworks to go on sale. it is cold but germans are prepared to line up and make sure they can see the new year
6:25 pm
in with a bang. the stores are only open three days year, the three days german losses shoppers can legally buy fireworks. germans are expected to spend about 124 million euros on fireworks before 2015 begins. the question is why our germans so fascinated by fireworks? >> i like the noise, everything. >> there is a big array of fireworks year and all of it only available for last 72 hours of december. the stores owners say the tight restrictions explain why many germans love them so much. >> everything explodes on the day you can set off fireworks. new year's eve is only half the fun in neighboring countries where you can set off fireworks all year round.
6:26 pm
>> but not everyone is looking forward to new year's eve. this scottish terrier's ears will be ringing soon. berlin's streets may be quiet now but they will be transformed on new year's eve will stop household pets just don't like fireworks. needless to say the owner is not a fireworks fan either, at least not she got her first pet dog. >> when i was young, i like them. i admit we like to set fireworks off, but that has changed with age. this is our third terrier. we had a pool before that. dogs are afraid of fireworks and we don't like going on the street will stop -- on the street will stop >> many germans flout the law and let off a few fireworks in the preceding days.
6:27 pm
reason enough for be pet -- for pet owners to be wary. meanwhile, back at the fireworks store, nobody is concerned with such thoughts and business is brisk, even if the weight is too long for some. they take their fireworks home by the box load an indication new year's eve will continue to be a fire cracking time in germany for some time to come. >> and time to keep the dogs off the streets. >> stay with us here at dw.
