hello, you're watching nhk "newsline." here is a look at the headlines. grappling with aftermath. crews in southwestern japan continue to search for missing people and secure damaged areas. and flying in, passenger plane lands at the airport, the first to do so since saturday. more are expected throughout the day. rescue crews in southwestern japan continue to race against the clock to find people missing after two powerful earthquakes. they have been combing through mud and rubble of destroyed buildings and bracing for more

tremors. thousands of rescuers are in the village, officials say nine people are unaccounted for there. authorities say 44 people died since thursday and more than 1,000. thousands of houses and buildings are damaged or destroyed and officials believe all those numbers could rise. they haven't been able to assess the situation in some areas. thousands of survivors are taking refuge at city offices. schools and parking lots, the overcrowded facilities are taking a toll on the elderly. a 70-year-old woman died in a restroom sunday could have been from fatigue and stress. many homes without power, water or gas and people lined up for ma meals and drinking water. >> i can get food here but it's hard to sleep well so i feel really tired. >> officials have recorded more

than 50 landslides in the area and more than 570 tremors since thursday with more possible. a passenger plane landed at the airport the first since saturday's powerful quake damaged a terminal building. the flight marks the limited restart of operations. the plane from tokyo landed around 7:30 in the morning local time. it had about 40 passengers on board, some of whom were carrying necessities for people in kumoto. not everything is back to normal. all flights from there remain grounded. the damage means airport officials are unable to inspect baggage. arriving passengers are not allowed into the terminal building. 17 other flights are scheduled to arrive from japanese cities during the day. airlines will monitor the effects of aftershocks and repair work to determine when they will increase that.

nhk learned at least 18 survivors were taken to the hospital for deep vein thrombosis. among thousands living and sleeping in vehicles since the earthquakes happened. the fret of more buildings collapsing. >> translator: cleanup during the daytime and stay in a car at night, most of our neighbors do the same. >> nurses are checking on people in their cars. blood clots usually caused by not moving for a long period of time. the clots can become launched in the lungs, which can be deadly. experts believe more than half of the damaged buildings in the town could collapse. the land ministry conducted an emergency inspection to assess the risk looking at more than 300 structures. experts found that 62% could collapse if earthquakes continue as did another 26% need attention. they warn people to be careful when entering. in the neighboring city inspector inspectors say more than 40 buildings are in danger. one man used his smart phone to save himself and his family. the university student was trapped under debris with four relatives after his house collapsed in a tremor. they were lying in a gap of about 60 centimeters.

and europe arriveed to help the rescue efforts. people are also concerned about their safety. the quake knocked down the walls of a prison allowing 130 inmates to escape. there are reports armed men attached trucks carrying water, clothes and other emergency goods. the recent quakes are also hurting the world's leading auto packer. toyota is gradually holding assembly lines in japan. the company says that the series of earthquakes in the country's southwestern region disrupted power supplies. on friday, the auto maker suspended car production at a subsidia subsidiary, which borders kumoto. executives say they are stopping assembly lines at 11 other plants nationwide on tuesday. one of them is located in the

south korean officials have been keeping an eye on the neighbor to the north. a spokesperson says north korea could soon conduct another under ground nuclear test. >> translator: north korea is ready to conduct the fifth nuclear test at any time. >> he said the defense ministry is closely monitoring the situation. he said south korea's military increased surveillance and been on heightened alert. last month the north korean state said leader kim jong un ordered preparations for what he called a test explosion of a nuclear war head. the president ordered south korea as military to be ready. she said it must be prepared to firmly deal with provocations by the north at any time. north korea has conducted four new clear tests at the test site in the northeast. the latest in january. south korea's news agency has

reported a pickup in activity and quoted military sources say vehicle movement and human activity have more than doubled since last month. one source reportedly said preparations for a fifth nuclear test appear to be in the final stages. a south korean military official is revealing more details about a failed ballistic missile launch. the official says it was a medium range missile that was fired from the east in port city of wonsan and exploded seconds after. south cokorea's joint chief of staff announced. the missile has a range of about 4,000 kilometers and can reach the u.s. pacific island where the u.s. military has a base. the weapon can be carried on a mobile launcher making it difficult to defect preparations to put it into flight. it's believed north korea was

preparing to fire one of the missile's three years ago. south korea's military remained on high alert for other possible tests. about 1,chinese parents who lost their only child have stated demonstration in beijing and will have no one to look after them because they were forced to follow the country's one child policy. the protesters gathered on monday in front of the national health and family planning commission. about 1 million households are estimated to have lost their offspring due to illness or accident. many such parents feel its unfair they have to obey a policy the government decided to scrap earlier this year after more than three decades. >> translator: my wife and i are too old to have another child. i want the government to look after us. >> chinese authorities announced on sunday the state would

provide a monthly allowance of about $50 to such bereaved parents but the families are not satisfied. local chinese government officials say they will launch an investigation into the cause of hundreds of sick journey high school students explaining pollution and many citizens are outraged. china's central television reported sunday the students became sick after moving to a new school building last septemb september. the tv station said almost 500 students had health problems. some were diagnosed with leukemia or lymphoma. the station pointed out a previous survey found the levels of pollutants in ground water were far above safety standards

information to estimate their travel time. another feature allows users to post alerts when there is trouble around the check point. sudden outbreaks of violence are a regular occurrence at these places. drivers stuck in long lines may find themselves in danger. and the check points often close without warning. since the app was released in november, it's been downloaded over 10,000 times. honestly, it really helps every time i want to go to work or whatever, i check the app. it makes my life easier, basically. >> the app gained attention in the local media, which has even branded it has a tool for resisting the occupation. he sees it as a stop point gather. >> i hope that some day they

atmosphere and last night was the coldest night since the earthquakes began late last week. actually temperature dropping down to six to seven degrees throughout the overnight. back towards north, another storm system wrapping up in the sea of japan will pull across northern areas, maybe southern and bring in showers and a few thunderstorms. that does remain off here towards the north back towards the west clearer skies throughout the forecast still going to look at another cool night here on wednesday before things start to continue to warm up by thursday. unfortunately, rain showers are coming with that. some could be rather heavy by the time thursday comes around, big problem is a chance of landslides because of the continued aftershocks here and also that chance of the ground continuing to be loose so there is that threat as we go ahead later on this week. where that storm system is developing is actually back here towards the west and southeastern china. you will be looking at a chance of locations 100 to 150

millimeters over the next several days. a threat of flooding and the last thing you need is more rain fall. actually, the same storm that impacted japan over this past weekend, also rode through this area and brought rather severe weather. i want to show you video where a tornado hit this area, rather severe storm system. 250 homes were damaged. the damage is estimated to be $4.2 million in total and over 35 crops and people lost power, definitely severe storm system. the good news is that no casualties were reported but the last thing you need is another bout of more rough weather out there and that looks to be the case throughout tuesday into wednesday before that shifts off there towards the east. do want to talk about the tropical system over here towards the west, as well, off the northern coastline of madagascar.

very intense tropical cyclone which is continuing to linger here. the big thing with this storm system, it is slowly weakening, still intense. 222 kilometer per hour sustained wins but a lack of steering flow. that means you can see the track not exactly certain. it is expected to move back towards the east and towards the west. the big thing with it, if it stays close enough to the coastline, it could result in some severe flooding and really something you want to be watching out for if you are across this area. moving over towards the americas, talk about severe flooding into texas, specifically houston. heavy rainfall out here. about 447 millimeters in one location in a 24-hour period. severe flooding has been reported. homes have been damaged and roads submerged and more rain is in the forecast. main reason for this back towards the east, high pressure right here is not going anywhere. that means this will sit in place and additional precipitation is definitely on the cards. at least it's bringing warm air
