shenzhen's gdp per capita has grown by 1400 u.s. dollars each year. it's now the highest in china. it's truly a city that never sleeps. the port control port is a border inspection point between hong kong and shenzhen. people cross it at all times from early morning to late at night. in the past, chinese citizens strive to make it big in hong kong. now, the goal is shenzhen.

the membership fee is $5500. more than 100 people have already signed up. this year, lu plans to start a new business. a restaurant. shenzhen is expected to become china's third largest city in a few years. it is known by countless names, including the town of entrepreneurs and china's silicon valley. a new day dawns over shenzhen.

in the past, shenzhen was merely a small fishing village on the shore across from hong kong. after china's open door policy, it was designated as a special economic zone and transformed into a base for electronics related factories. now, in the center of town stands a massive electronics market called huagianbai. more than 30,000 stores fill the land. it's known as the place to find any electronics in the world. shenzhen's total population is roughly 14 million with an average age of just 33. more than 99% of residents are those who came from elsewhere in search of careers.

just 36 hours. the winning team get a ticket to silicon valley. first, they begin setting up tents although there's no telling whether they will have time to sleep. since the contest will be streamed online, if investors like what they see, some ideas may be commercialized. as people begin showing up for work, all sorts of electronic parts get delivered.

the town features everything from legitimate retail items to knock offs, generic goods and so called junk items. more than 500,000 people visit the site every day. the attention grabbing features are not limited to its massive size. young people with new ideas for products come here from all over the world. these idea makers find cheap parts and through trial and error turn ideas into tangible items. many individuals and companies supporting them also gather here. the phenomenon naturally gives the image of a town that

contributes to start ups. next generation gadgets like smartphones, virtual model are being developed at a surprising pace. meanwhile, the 36-hour contest has begun. first, the contestants go out to buy components. but when they get off the elevator, they are stimply stunned. surrounded by electronic shops, they have no idea where to go. wang had been working as a freelance programmer. he entered the contest alone in hopes of developing and releasing his own products.

wang first searches for switch components. if he just want a typical twi h switch, he can get it on any floor in the building. with a specific feature in mind, it becomes more challenging. he finally figures out there's a store with the item he wants. there are more than 100 stores on each floor. they have no signs and products are strewn all over. no one he asks even knows where the store is. none of the security guards know either. searching for certain stores is like finding a needle in hay stack.

wang is making a tool that teaches english to children as they play. the features can be uploaded to the internet. at this stage, it's hard to imagine how the finished product will look. around noon, food vendors and delivery men line the streets. these meals on the go are crucial in this busy town. two years ago a new service called dedicated cars began. the car services cater to any customer needs. they deliver anything, anywhere

shenzhen is the third wealthiest city in china after beijing and shanghai. more than 50,000 residents here have assets exceeding $1.5 million. at this club, lectures and banquets are held every week. members are also organize private parties here. the initial enrollment fees range from 10,000 to $30,000 depending on the rank. this woman is famous make up artist who receives requests from many a list celebrities.

li is thinking of launching new businesses targeting the wealthy such as scosmetic surgery. the shenzhen bay bridge was built on the 10th anniversary of hong kong's return to china. it's the fastest route to hong kong. a children's event is under way nearby. kids are making robots by putting together electronic

parts. by changing the parts they can select the functions of the robot. it's like electronic lego blocks. this product was invented six years ago by a start up founded. now it's sold in 140 countries around the world. the company hopes to facilitate the emergence of a chinese steve jobs. the company's idea represents the city by using the same parts but changing the combination and rewriting the program one can create tnew hardware. even with the children's kit,
