in 2016, china abolished its one-child policy aimed at controlling the surging population. the policy which began in 1979 allowed couples to have only one child. it is believed that most of the

over 600 million births that occurred under the law were only children. the first of those are now in their late 30s. seven years ago our program followed two couples in shanghai. yang wrong a they were struggling with the education of their 3-year-old son. the lives of these formerly middle class couples have since changed drastically. atop the wave of economic development, they stand among china's reg e wealthiest with annual incomes of over u.s. dollars. children. now they're working hard to maintain a family with siblings, something completely unfamiliar to them. upon the heir who would someday be the only one to provide for parents and grandparents alike. two years after the birth of her first son, she had a second child. she could did so because the one-child policy was progressively lifted around the nation. wanting to raise her children on her own, she became a full-time stay-at-home mom. she has gradually refused help from her in-laws but she still stops by their home a few days each week. all of the sudden her younger son began to cry out saying he's angry that his big brother went up the stairs before him.

him to cram school for all subjects, but now she only sends him here and to another school for literature. this cram school is typical for shanghai. it runs from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m., serves dinner to students and offers makeup classes for them depending on their needs. the tuition is about $260 a month. he always finishes his homework here. in the past, she had great expectations for her only son, but after having her second child two years ago, that perspective has changed. she says the entire family, even the grandparents were relieved from the pressures of having an only child.
