what happens in the headlines and on the campaign trail.that starts with the barnstorm. in a race full of shocking comments from the republican front runner -- there's a debate going on now about if the most recent donald trump comment is too vulger for the campaign trail. trail.he was talking about how hillary clinton was the front runner in 2008 -- and then got badly beat by barack obama.he used a word that we won't use here.but timing is everything. while that comment was hanging in the air -- clinton was in keota high school when one girl asked her about what she would do about bullying. "occasionally i've heard people talking behind my back about not wanting to be near me because i have asthma. i mean people it's not

are look at someone who has had a lot of terrible things said about me and i am well aware of the fact that it's really easy to do that. you just say it and send it around the world. that was all going on while both campaigns are going toe to toe through the media.the trump campaign demanded that clinton apologize for saying that isis is using videos of donald trump to recruit new members.the clinton campaign response doesn't mince any words. words.they say: "hell no. hillary clinton will not be apologizing to donald trump for correctly pointing out how his hateful rhetoric only helps isis recruit more terrorists." first thing monday morning -- south carolina senator lindsey graham got out of the fray -- announcing that he'd be suspending his campaign.he said even though he wasn't polling well -- he was able to influence the the discussion going on in the republican party. party. "i believe we have run a campaign you can be proud of. we put forward bold and practical solutions to big problems, like retiring our

immigration system. this has been a problem solvers' campaign. campaign.that brings the official field down to 13. later that same day -- former arkansas governor mike huckabee was in swisher talking with voters. he told the crowd at a faith and freedom coalition fundraiser that he was frustrated that republicans passed a budget that gives up on conservative values without getting anything in return.he says the blame falls on both outgoing speaker john boehner and his replacement -- speaker paul ryan. "and im very disappointed. that's not what we sent republicans to washington to do, to cave in to the most radical, leftist agenda that funds planned parenthood, that funds the relocation fo syrian refugees, that funds obamacare, illegal immigration. three girls were at the heart of one of the coolest school assemblies in the state.steffi lee explains what happened after their sociology teacher challenged them to do something that would have an impact on their community. community. just for reference purposes - 700 people filled this gym and

welcome back.this is the real story -- some of the events that will go on during the 2016 race for the white house. house.today -- we take a closer look at one of the biggest fears for some republican candidates -- a brokered convention. historically -- conventions had been pretty hectic.back in the early 1900's -- before huge campaigns and a long

would meet to figure out who would represent the party in the general election.the process would have been long -- tedius -- and when the media started to cover it as it was happening on the radio instead of day by day in the newspapers -- it would have been very very boring. "it just doesn't look good on tv. its facsinating but in a way like horror movies and dramatic films like that. you wouldn't want to actually be in that senario and that is where the parties find themsevles. the infighting would just be too much and tear supporters apart.over the next century -- the party conventions eventually became less about fighting for the nomination. nomination.that work was done more on the road before -- in caucuses and primaries all across the country.it opened the conventions up to be big parties where everyone could unite behind one candidate -- give the up and coming members a place to introduce

the discussion that was going on earlier this month is that if there isn't a candidate that has a majority of the delegates already -- that the g-o-p might pick the candidate through backroom dealings. dealings.that would be tough in any election year -- but especially in a race where the "outsiders" have been getting a lot of attention because many voters are fed up with the party elites.even the candidates themselves don't agree if this is all a good idea. "i don't wnat to see backroom dealing going on with the power brokers. that is one of the things that has sickened people about politics and i would never be a part of that. that."i don't think the rank and file republicans would ever allow the process to be stolen from them at the convention. i think people are so steamed up about what congress has done and i'm thinking that one of the reasons you're seeing some of the candidates do well is they represent a gut punch to the establishment. at the end of the day -- this

2016 race to try to break the mold of conventional presidential campaigns.but bruce nesmith at coe college says he doesnt think the g-o-p convention will turn into that kind of knock down drag out fight.nesmith says that would be bad for the party -- because it wouldnt' give voters enough time to heal again -- and unite behind the eventual nominee before the general election.he says the concern isn't that they'll vote for the democratic nominee -- just that they wont vote at all.instead -- he says as candidates start to drop out -- voters will separate into the trump camp -- cruz camp -- and establishment camp -- and one of those will walk away with the nomination. next on iowa in focus -- the campaigns might have held off from hosting events because of the holidays -- but they were super active on social media.
