welcome back.in the real story this week -- we're taking a deeper look at donald trump's stances on immigration immigrationand trace how he got to his policy pronouncemen t this week. donald trump's offical campaign started june 16th -- 2015.that night -- he was in des moines -- but he had been through parts of iowa before then testing the waters before he officially decided to jump i. in.this was largely introductory -- iowa republicans getting to know trump and not knowing exactly what to make of the real estate mogul and reality t-v star turned politician.he spoke a lot about trade deals -- how he'd face down china and mexico -- and at the very end -- the problem with immigration over the southern border between the united states and mexico. "if you're mexico, you're not sending your best people over here. you're not sending the happily married couple down the street that is wonderful. we're getting killers, we're getting drug dealers, we're getting rapists.

heard one of the most recognizable lines of the 2016 race. "i would build a wall bigger, better stronger than any wall. no body comes in illegally. and i build great buildings. believe me and i'll build it under budget and ahead of schedule and i'll have mexico pay for it. but the san bernardino attacks opened the door for trump to take his immigration policy one step farther.after a muslim couple shot and killed co workers before they were killed by police -- all in step farther. "donald j. trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of muslims enetering the united states until our country's representatives can figure out what the hell is going on. trump had also been calling for survailance on muslims communities and mosques try to to find terrorist activities.

from the muslim ban.some people called it "walking back" -- trump argued that it was actually an expansion of the same policy. "i'm looking now at territory. people were so upset when i used the word muslim. oh, you can't use the word muslim. remember this. and i'm okay with that, because i'm talking territory instead of muslim.." and if a person can't prove what they should be able to prove, they're not coming into this country. and i would stop the syrian migration and the syrians from coming into this country in two seconds. august 27th -- trump came through iowa for joni ernst's second annual roast and ride. he made plenty of headlines trying to appeal to black and hispanic voters -- saying that he would fix the issues that exist in those communities if he gets into the white house. but he held firm on his immigration policies. "on day one, i'm going to begin swiftly removing criminal, illegal immigrants from this country....we will

crimes... wednesday -- trump shocked a lot of people by accepting an invitation from the mexican president to go on a visit earlier in the day.at this point -- a lot of people thought we were about to see a pivot to using language and pushig policies that would rub fewer peopel the wrong way.if you know how this ends -- conventional wisdom was very wrong.that night -- he was in arizona laying out his most recent policy stance on immigration reform. reform.he said the meeting with the mexican and early one in a long process.when he was there -- he seemed cordial with the mexican president.back in arizona -- it was a different story. "and mexico will pay for the wall. they don't know it yet, but they're gonna pay for it. promises made on the campaign trail are one thing -- but actually implementing them once elected often gets in the way.cedar rapids immigration attorney ray scheetz works in the world that donald trump

it's a slow process -- from when someone is arrested to the day that they may or may not be kicked out of the country.he says in between those two dates -- hardly anything is clear cut. "what struck me is when he was talking about this, there were these people saying "yes, this is what we need. we need to build the wall."but there's so much more gray. there's not a lot of black and white." to all the cases he sees that makes each one take a slightly different path through the court system.we aren't even close to being finished with this topic. coming up next...we spend much more time with immigration attorney ray scheetz -- to learn about the immigration process as it works -- or

all types of illegal immigrants of all ages -- with all types of stories about how they ended up in the united states.he says they generally come for the economic opportunties.the key is that when they're caught in the united states illegally -- exactly how they originally showed up can make all the diff. difference. the law makes one significant difference. did the person come here illegally or did they come here persuant to some permission and jsut never went back? when they came here and just never left, they ahve a lot more options. if they common one, then we have options. if the person came here illegally, then that person is very limited, even if they got married to a us citizen. they have to return to their home country, get processed and then return. return.does it make sense to
