an in depth look at the people and events that shape our community.this is iowa in focus.this week -- team trump plays defense -- while telling everyone they're playing offense.a corridor principal gets in hot water for what he says is a teachable moment. welcome to iowa in focus -- we're giving context to what happens in the headlines and on the campaign trail. trail.that starts with the rn before one of the most highly anticipated debates even started -- the trump campaign made some of the biggest headlines of the election cycle.they had been playing defense after a 2005 video was released where donald trump is caught on tape talking about how he can openly and easily assault women because he's famous.a few hours before the debate was supposed to start -- trump told his traveling press that there would be a photo-op of him finishing his debate prep. prep.when the press walked in

sitting behind a long table with four other women who all either accuse bill clinton of directly sexually assaulting them -- or accuse hillary of verballing attacking them -- or defending their attacker. "actions speak louder than words. mr trump may have said some bad words but bill clinton raped me and hillary clinton threatened me. i don't think there's any comparison. once the debate started - first 25 minutes was dedicated to just this issue.trump apologized -- but tried to redirect the attention towards bill clinton's own misdeeds while clinton seemed happy to try to let the tape talk for itself. "you brag taht you have sexually assaulted women. no i didnt' say that at all. you didn't understand what was said. that was lockeroom talk. i'm not proud of it, i appologize to my family. i apologize to the american peopl.

but i think it's clear to anyone who has heard it that it represents exactly who he is. they did eventually move on to other policy issues taking center stage in the 2016 race for the white house.one of the first actions for the next president will be their supreme court nomination once they take office. office.justice antonin scalia died back in february -- but the senate judiciary committee has refused to hold hearing for president obama's nominee to replace scalia. chuck grassley chairs that committee -- and has said that it's not right to consider the president's nominee when president obama is so close to leaving office.if nothing changes -- the next nomination will likely be left to trump or clinton. "i'm looking for judges and i've picked 20 of them. highly respected and beautifully reviewed by everybody

scotus judges who understand the world really works and who have not just worked in a big law firm, and maybe clerked for a judge and gotten on the bench but who have tried more casesa nd understand what people are up against because i think the current court has gone in the wrong direction. even after the debate was over -- most of the attention was still being paid to those 2005 tapes.while some republican leaders -- like senator john jason chaffetz -- announced they wouldn't be voting for trump -- speaker of the house paul ryan took a different approcah.ryan told his fellow house members that he is no longer defending donald trump -- and that house members should do what's best for them and their district.the speaker is still endorsing trump -- but said he was sickened by the comments in the video. video.that prompted trump to take to twitter -- saying -- in part -- : "paul ryan should spend more time on balancing

immigration and not waste his time on fighting republican nom" nominee."the thing is -- paul ryan has a majority in the house to protect -- while there's going to be a battle in the senate to keep a republican majority in that chamber.in des moines -- governor branstad still stayed behind trump.we say it a lot - - but it's worth mentioning again -- governor branstad's son -- eric -- is donald trump's iowa state director. "my feeling is we have this huge double standard and lets go back and look at how the clinton's have been treated and are they being given the same scrutiny for what they have done for what we're seeing wtih donald trump?" the 2016 election is a challenge for parents.the namecalling -- and sometimes -- the vulgar language -- at times has been inappropriate in a way presidential races never have been before.after what donald trump calls his "locker room talk" -- dora miller explains how one

"she said that to be successful politically, you have to have both a public and private position, now when she was asked about that at the debate did you see how she

republicans haven't been able to capitalize because they've been digging themselves out of a hole.just for good measure -- bill clinton came through iowa too. too.he laid out hillary's plans for affordable college -- and how she plans on increasing mental health care and finding ways to fight prescription drug and heroin abuse.he says hillary wants to improve education - but that starts with fixing the infrastructure. "we still don't have universal affordable broadbanmd in america - th infrastructure - and if you build it --- you will make education a lot more equal and give them a better future." let's go inside iowa politics -- to talk about the people not trying to move into the white house. iowa's second district candidates sat down for an open forum earlier in the week before a debate later in the week.the interesting part is both candidates bring their own unique experiences.the incumbent -- congressman dave

policial science professor... professor...but his republican challenger -- doctor christopher peters is a veteran -- and practing surgeon in iowa city -- giving him a first hand look at the affordable care act. "my overall vision is that care should be more patient centered between doctor and patient rather tahn govenrment, cms, and insurance companies. and we should allow market forces to work to reduce the costs of care. we haven't allowed that to work for the most part. the incumbent has a distinct advantage because of the work they've already done that they're able to fall back on. just a few weeks ago -- the debate about flood protection started again when cedar rapids battled the cedar river. river. "but what i just did as you know, i partnered with congressman blum and i partnered with our two senators to tell the army corp of engineers to prioritize that project. how that gets prioritized remains to be seen

at the state level -- leutenant governor kim reynolds just got back from overseas where she was learning more about how iowa can be a player on the world st. stage.she talked to other leaders about how iowa is successful with a large ag-based economy -- and compared notes in places like argentina -- which also relies heavily on farming.she also learned about how one iowa business based there was struggling because of restrictive government regulations -- keeping them from brining in the resources they need. and they alrady today had recieved 33 containers of product and so they're able to be competative and grow the market." coming up next...we trace the role of planned parenthood in the 2016 election -- before we

"women should be able to make their own decisions about their pregnancies and their futures. and the majority of americans agree. we trust women to make these decisions in consultation with their doctors, their famileis and

congress. it is unacceptabel that in the 21st century, women in america are routinely harrassed for accessing a legal medical procedure. in november -- a gunman opened fire on a planned parenthood clinic in colorado springs. springs.the 57-year old gunman killed two civilians and a police officer before being arrested.the man was rambling about the work that planned parenthood does.soon after -- we sat down with local planned parenthood employees to see went about their work. "there was a range of emotions from our staff from sadness, grief, anger, shock, numbness, but we've seen an outpouring of support from people who do value our work and our mission so that's been really neat. the backlash on the campaign trail came right away.bobby jindal was one of the only

presidential race at the time -- to have any real success against planned parenthood.as governor of louisiana -- he was able to end the state's department of health contract with planned parenthood.just a few months before -- doctor rand paul worked on a bill with iowa senator joni ernst to defund planned parenthood nationally. "this is ridiculous. planned parenthood's answers were ridiculous. planned parenthoods actions were barbaric. we see this video where they take our tax payer dollors, ripping apart their bodies and selling them acros the countrythat callous attitude and not acknowleding that that baby she's harvesting parts out of is horrifficwe cancelled their contract in louisiana, we're working to make sure they don't get any taxpayer funding in louisiana. in d-c, they're just talking about it. ted cruz's socially conservative stances put him at odds with planned parenthood from the start.in johnson county -- with it's large pockets of liberal voters -- cruz didn't back away from his attack on the organziation -- and instead focused partially on the media
