ambulances left there were 35 people on board the lion share of those people were most likely elementary school students aging from kind garden to fifth grade we've been tracking this all day long what we know is that school district will have school tomorrow but with counselors on hand and mostly in a supporting-type of role we'll keep tracking this when we come back later we'll look at the response and the next steps in this investigation as that picks up kelly. despite today's tragic events traveling by school bus remains one of the safest ways to travel federal records show on average more than 130 people die each year in a crash involving a school bus, with just 6 of those deaths occur on the school bus, that translates to an average of 6 deaths a year aboard 480,000 school buses with an average of 10

is. dora miller fox 28 news. our chief meteorologist joins us now and the beginning of our holiday week is going to get a little bit of rain. we'll see rain around eastern iowa for the first time in 20 days you can see the weather system gathering to the southwest of us the clouds have spread into eastern iowa and some light precipitation has begun to show up in central iowa as we go in closer on the radar here you can that now from about ottumwa to des moines, fort dodge, notice the colors up that way there could be a little bit of sleet or snowflakessed mixed in, later on that potential does exist in our northern counties for mixed precipitation but i think it will be very brief in duration should move out quickly and tomorrow afternoon showers expected for the corridor commute temperatures above the freezing mark we'll keep the clouds all day long and the majority of the rain is

when our high temperatures will be holding in the upper 30s to around 40 degrees kind of a cool raw day. damp too. an update to last night's breaking news, san antonio police believe they have the man who walked up to one of their own killing him in an ambush style attack. detective benjamin marconi was conducting a traffic stop outside police headquarters when a man approached him from behind and shot him twice in the head. now investigators believe this is the man who trigger. his name is ottis mccaine authorities are trying to figure out why this happened. >> this investigation is by no means over. the motive for the murder is still unknown. >> the chief says he is convinced the suspect killed the officer because of his uniform. surveillance video shows him inside police headquarters before the shooting.

two decades behind bars for possessing child pornography.it was that crime that led 53-year-old danny heinrich to admit to taking wetterling in 19-89.as part of a federal plea agreement - he took investigators to the 11-year-olds remains.in court today - heinrich apologized for his "evil acts."because of the plea deal - heinrich won't ever face state murder or kidnapping charges for killing wetterling.heinrich could be released in 17 years - but the judge in the case says that is iowa city police have now charged -- a group of teens with carrying weapons after a rash of bb gun shootings.one person received minor injuries, but there's also at least 35-thousand dollars worth of damage on the southeast side of town.police are still working to identify all the damage.one victim showed fox 28 news the three dents on his car that now have to be repaired. it's just sad that you can't leave your property out on a

without something like this happening.if you think you might have been a victim of this vandalism spree, call iowa city police to file a formal report. a marion road is back open now after a delicate situation thatrequired haz-mat crews to respond.it happened late this afternoon along 3rd avenue between 35th and 44th street. first responders blocked off the area so crews could safety remove and disperse leaking anhydrous ammonia.none a major makeover for downtown cedar rapids is inching closer a major make over for downtown cedar rapids is inching closer to reality. >> there is a lot of buzz around 1 park place. it would be a 28 story, the tallest building in the corridor. an independent review has determined that the project is

point out first just the fact we have rain a big deal about 3 weeks since its been on the radar what you can also see right here is just east of des moines blues and pinks northwest of fort dodge there could be snowflakes and sleet mixed in with the rain this band will move north or cause problems on the road, wintery precipitation around before it all changes over to some rain you can see the clouds temperatures are not going to go down too much more the rest of tonight the main storm is well to the southwest this is just a little wing of precipitation that will move on by i don't look for too much in the morning hours the rain will once again pick up during the afternoon and over night hours tomorrow and the corridor commute we should see mostly cloudy skies a few stray showers around temperatures 34

continue to increase tonight and into tomorrow, get into that chance of precipitation if there is going to be a mix ifs our northern counties, that system moves out early on wednesday, finally by thanksgiving day it looks dry and seasonal with high temperatures back up into the lower 40s. the rain has avoided us in recent times gone 19 consecutive days with no rain here in eastern iowa that's nowhere close to the record though the longest streak ever established in 1952. so here is our storm getting set to move over the midwest in the next 24 hours, the main low pressure area is down to the southwest of us still getting organized as high pressure moves off to the east that's allowing moisture to come up here that will have the system with the precipitation to eastern iowa as far as amounts go i don't think it will be overly impressive there could be areas, especially along and

half to maybe .6 of an inch and in washington only .2 expected there, a third in cedar rapids on our predicter we start with 6 a.m. tomorrow morning clouds around not much in the way of precipitation late in the morning then in the afternoon when we expect the rain to start increasing around here, most of the time the freezing presip is gone in minnesota and night at midnight, finally wednesday morning still scattered showers lingering but then as we go through the day the worse of that heads to minnesota and wisconsin by evening it is dry and cloudy here in eastern iowa we'll follow that up with clearing skies and a good day for thanksgiving itself, increasing cloudiness in our northern counties low temperatures 32 degrees in our southern counties light showers expected

. here is a live look at seventh avenue and marion, gorgeous lights out there on this thanks giving week, we're checking in on our weather now we want to know what turkey day will be like. terry swails has a look beyond the seven day. thank you kelly i do think thanksgiving is probably going to be the best day of the tuesday, wednesday and maybe early in the day on friday, here is the first system we're dealing with you could see the precipitation now trying to form and work its way into eastern iowa and the leading edge of it right in here starting to see blues and pinks that's where there could be a few snowflakes or sleet pellets around, this little band will work its way to the north and move across later on tonight

and the next waive of rain comes in in the afternoon temperatures in all locations should be cold enough, make that warm enough for plane old rain so the morning commute tomorrow morning has mostly cloudy skies around just a few sprinkles or a stray shower particularly to the north and temperatures around 7 a.m. somewhere in that range of 32 to 34 degrees and with the rain increasing later on in the day that's when temperatures will stay cool with highs only in the upper 30s to around 40 degrees in most locations. 14 day outlook shows we're out to december 5th and the temperatures over all looking a little bit cooler. we only have four days out of our 14 here where the temperatures are actually above normal so we start out pretty cool this week over the weekend, a nice bump in temperatures and a front comes through and we start a cooling trend that should keep temperatures for the end of november and right into the first week of december somewhere in the 30s, this is a time frame here to watch too

can move through the midwest with some snow but the exact track and have no way to know at this point in time, somewhere in the midwest will be significant snow could be close to us something to watch in the days ahead. meantime our extended forecast has showers then again tomorrow afternoon into wednesday morning, those depart thanksgiving day itself looks dry for the high temperature and beyond that our weekend shaping up friday, saturday, sunday, temperatures pushing 50 cooler air moves back in the forecast early next week a chance for a few showers around. the first team coverage continues with meteorologist rebecca looking at our corridor commute. there are spots in the corridor that do have some road closures and lane closures as people are going to start to do their holiday travel if you are traveling tomorrow down along i- 80 parts of cedar county will have a lane reduction starting at 9 a.m.

the wilton area westbound on i- 80 the right lane will be closed that will be until 3:00 tomorrow afternoon so if you are heading out to westbound rather along cedar county you could run into trouble spots there or just some delays then of course along highway 30 didn't want to remind you that there is still some construction ongoing at the 80th street bridge where they are continuing to have a detour in place and that's actually likely going to continue to run as we head into th and throughout much of next year and that will actually take you off of the highway and that will be in place as we head into the holiday so if you are doing any of the traveling of course know that it is a busy time on on the road waze says the busiest time is around 3 p.m. on wednesday and the best time is actually to leave early on thanksgiving morning. next on the fox 28 news at 9:00. >> it's been incredible to see
