first thisisorning an update to a court case caseinvolving a cedar rapids man who repeatedly tried to get away from police.a judge sentenced james surrett to serve 15 years in prison.it all started in february -- en depies say surrett led them through cedar rapids on a high speed chase chase.itnded when he slammed into a truck and school bus -- hurting two people.after getting out of jail -- surrett was accused of holding a woman against her will.he was arrested again -- bonded out

of jail -- and later led authorities on a second chase. surrett now alsosoas to pay thousands of dollars in restitution. a waterloo man faces charges chargesfor what police are calling an attempted abduction and shooting.waterloo police tell cbs 2 news, ty-ray smith hit a woman with a gun, shot at her and missed. when she drove away from the scene smith pointed a gun at another man's head and told him to get into his truck.police found the truck on west 13-th street early yesterday morning.smith was arrested on several charges and is being held in the black hawk county jail. several people are facing charars after u-n-i's homecoming weekend. weekend.the warloo-cedar falls courier reports 21- year-old thomas hunt got on the roof of the hydrant firehouse grill on college street at 11-30 friday night. when officers arrived --e jumped off the roof and took off.an officerern a bike chased hunt but he knocked the officer off the bike. bike.nt and another person were arrested for assault on a peace officer.one person was arrested for o-w-i and eight

peop were arrested for possessing mararuana. cbs 2 news has learned new details about a prison break at the iowa state penitentiary in fort madison. madison.inmate justin kestner was discovered missing during u head count in july.prison guards say he made s bed look like he was still underneath the covers. covers.apparently,kestner pulled out screws from his shower and climbed through the pipe out of e prison un- noticed.authorities say he did this several times during dry runs to see how far he could go.after he escaped, kestner was found near i-80 bruised and scraped from his previous cape attempts.an vestigation found several mistakes in procedure that have since been corrected. iowa state senator liz mathis says a plan by the governor to privatize medicaid could deny critical re to nearly half a million iowans -- including many here in the corridor. corridor.she held a stening post meeting in marion to hear ncerns.governor branstad estimated that his pl to turn over dicaid services to private companies would save tax-x-yers millions of

children's programs, open hours and materials are just someof the things cedar rapids public library staff y could suffer if the libraries are unable to maintain funding. funding.that's why they're asking for support on a 27-cent levy on the november third ballot.staff say this levy would help maintain current fundinlevels, after losing a couple other sources they've been using since the flood.for the average 150 ousand dollar cedar rapids household, the tax uld be about 23 dollars a year. if this levy does not pass, we will not be ablto maintain current levels of service, which means us we will not be able to offer seven day a week servivi at either location. location.if approved the tax would start july first 20-16. staff will be at the downtown library tonight from 4-to-6 to answer any community quesons. if you haven't noticed by now -- the d-o-t has a message for drivers every momoay.they're on the digital signs on the interstate -- including i-380 in cedar rapids as part of their messagmonday initiative.this week's message was "crashes don't kill tns,
