an update to a story we fst brought you on cbs 2 this morning. we now know the name of the man killed by police after a shoout with cedar rapids police. the police department says it was all apart of an ongoing drug investigation. investigation.police officers pulled over three suspects along the 3200 hundred block of ravenwood terrace northwest. when the hicle stopped -- 21 year old jonathan gossman got

out and ra-- two officers and a k-9 unit chased him. him.police say gossman shot at officers when they were trying to arrest him.they shot back -- hitting and killing him.. right now -- the identities of the officers are not being released.the iowa d-c-i will be investigating the shooting. just yesterday -- city leaders served on a panel at jefferson high school -- meeting with students on how they can take action to make the community safer. safer.it's part a national day of concern about gun violence across the countr cedar rapids police chief wayne jerman was there along th mayor ron corbett and and an f-b-i special agent.they answered questions from 180 freshman students about guns and gun violence.students were told to speak up if they see anything -- and were encouraged to end violence by taking a pledge.panelists and scho officials say this discussion is a good place to start. 13:13:00 gun violence is a symptom of a much larger problem, a much larger issue that we're trying to deal with and identify what the root

cause is and then attack those issues. issues.panelists and school officials hope the discussion continues even online -- with the hashtag gun-pledge c-r.. jury selection for a murder trial is underway in waterloo. roderick ward junior is accused of killing gary wilson outside his home in august of 2014. 2014.police say ward shot wilson with a shotgun after an argument. wilson dd of a gun shot wound to the chest.ward is charged with first degree murder - if convicted, he faces a mandatory life sentence. several people in center point are aremissing things they left in their cars.e linn county sheriff's office tells cbs 2 news items were stolen from nine unlocked vehicles.in o case -- a rifle and ammo were stolen.most cars were just missg change or small items. police believe they quickly solved a case of arson in cedar rapids.the department tells cbs 2 news, a witness saw richard alatalo breaking into a vacant house on 'j' street southwest monday

police who then arreed alatalo when he came out the back door.investigators say they later discovered a small fire inside a bedroom in the home.the suspect faces arso and burglary charges. in waterloo, waterloo,authorities are trying to figure out what sparked a fire on linden avenue at about 4-15 yesterday morning.while investigating th found the body of 64- year-old rebecca lavenz.crews sathe fire was minor, but there was heavy smoke damage. an autopsy is scheduled, but investigators say her death does not appear to be suspicious. a rally will be held today at 3pm on the mpus of the university of wa iowacampus and community members are comign together to demand the iowa board of regents to resign or be removed.thboard and the u-i have been under fire after the controversial selection of bruce herrald as the next university president.they are accused of favoriting herrald over other candidates.last week, consultants from the american association of university professors were on campus gathering information

about the hiring process.the lly today is scheduled for 3 p-m at the i-m-u. republicans may have their ma to be the next speaker of the house.congressman paul ryan says he'll run - but has some demands.he wants the party to united in their vote -the house freedom caucus - the group that helped push speaker john boehner into retirement - still has to decide if it will support ryan.but membs of the house caucus may not be on board. driver's side switches on me models have been found to malfunction if they did not receive enough grease during the manufacturing process.it said it got 11 reports of burnt door trim, and one report of a customer who burned their hand.the affected cars were oduced between 2005 and 2010 - we have a list of those on our website cbs 2 iowa dot com. diet coke sales have plummeted. plummeted.sales of the soda plunged eight percent around the world during the third quarter of this year.that follows steep declines for diet coke in t fst half of this year.diet drinks have been struggling because consumers have concerns that their artificial ingredients make the drinks less healthy than advertised.pepsi responded by removing the sweetener aspartame from diet pepsi.but coke continues to use that ingredie in diet coke.another reason for the decline might be because of growing popularity of no-calorie coke zero.that soda saw volume grow eight percent in the third quarter.
