japan's takata corporation admits it knew about the defect in the airbags but failed to issue a timely recall. and with that the u.s. fined $70 million. and it could raise up to 200$200 million. the airbags are blamed for seven deaths and nearly 100 injuries. and here with the latest this morning. >> reporter: stephanie irvin's life has been changed forever. in december 2013, she was involved in a collision, and instead of her airbag protecting her, it nearly killed her. the airbag exploded and sent sclalinal shrapnel into her face. >> i have to say this has been a mess. >> reporter: transportation

secretary blamed them for misleading the american public for years. >> refusing to acknowledge the truth allows a serious problem to become a massive crisis. >> reporter: documents filed with the national highway safety administration showed they first learned about exploding airbags in 2000. and for years, they denied a nation wide recall was necessary. this summer, after congressional hearings and pressure from the government, takata admitted the airbags were defected. the problem centers on the airbag's inflater, which is killed with the chemical, ammonium nitrate. when moisture or humidity gets into the system, this happens,

it explodes, sending shrapnel flying through the vehicle. nitsa ordered takata to get it done two years faster than originally planned and they also must stop making all airbags with ammonium nitrate. >> it's significant and that's why nitsa is taking you. >> they said we deeply regret the circumstances that caused this. we will complete and are committed to being part of the solution. the fixes won't be complete until at least 2019. we posted a list of recalled vehicles on our website. in chicago alone there are been well over 2500 victims so far this year. the latest, a young boy killed

yesterday. here is dean reynolds. >> a person is shot laying in the alley. >> reporter: this is where 9-year-old tyshawn lee was murdered on monday and that's his mom being comforted by the cops who was just told her boy was dead. >> please, taking too many young lives. please. >> he was shot multiple times in the neck and head. they don't know yet whether he was in the wrong place at the wrong time or targeted in a gang feud. >> there was an unknown number of individuals gathered in the alley prier to the shooting. some type of argument or altercation ensued, which was followed by gun fire. >> reporter: many in the community are helping them, the

member, isn't cooperating. 20-year-old kalen prior, just starting her career as a professional model was murdered in a drive-by shooting while on a visit to her grandparents. with 391 murders this year, the homicide rate is up 18% from a year ago. and the fbi, the president and hillary clinton have all been to chicago in just the last week decrying the violence that has defied answers. susan johnson runs an organization that provides support. >> i know a parent of a year-old, saechb7-year-old. >> what can you tell those people? >> there's nothing you can tell them, all you can do is be with them. >> they're offering a reward for information leading to the

all: cbs cares! . now to the book of revelations about americans and religion. there's interesting findings in a report today from pier research. but the number of americans who say they're absolutely certain god exists has fallen from 71% to 63. >> reporter: in north hollywood california, alex mckale says she fulfills her spiritual needs at a yoga studio. >> most of my friends and when most, i mean all except for my boyfriend, don't go to church anymore. >> reporter: in fact, only 28%

but not necessarily saying there's not something out there. >> absolutely not. it's more like i hear so many people who are like i believe there's a god, just not a hell. >> reporter: there has also been a decline in the number of americans who claim be to affil affiliated to religion. but the survey notes that among those who do identify with a religion, the number of religious observance has remained the same. the number who say they pray every day has risen from 65% to 66%. >> there's something that beckons us. and is something that we respond

religious or spiritual practices and i don't think that that will ever go away. >> reporter: while organized religion may be declining, spirituality is on the rise. the study shows 6 in 10 adults say they regularly feel an inner sense of peace and well being and that's up seven points from seven years ago. the iraqi politician that persuaded the u.s. to over throw saddam hussein died of a heart attack. after the u.s. invasion, he tried but failed to become arack's prime minister and later had a falling out with the pentagon. he was 71. iraq today is a fractured nation. much of the north is controlled by isis, and here is a town where people fear their way of

>> reporter: abdul ronny and her children found shelter here after islamic militants over ran mosul. she was forced to make a stark decision, convert to islam or face execution and now she says she doesn't trust any muslims. they recruit kids like mine to behead people. how could i like those peopleal. like thousands of others, she fled to this village where the entire population is christian. the site is also home to the saint monstrae, its origins dating back to the 7th century. it's one of the oldest symbols of christianity in this region. and as isis has forced people out, it's becoming onef the last.

refugees, it's not just isis, known as dash, that keeps them from going back. this father says people were shocked by the betrayal of muslim neighbors they've known forgenerations. >> they were supporting dash and we know dash will go away from iraq but the mentality of dash will remain at mosul. >> reporter: he told us that even if isis is one day defeated, she'll never go back. for christians, she said, iraq is gone. none of this bodes well for the plan to drive isis out of mosul and in the hope of putting the second largest city back together again, especially since it's been under isis control for more than a year.

about to study the jet liner that went down in egypt. and two heat flashes were found. there was no sign of a missile launch, meaning it's unlikely the plane was shot down. investigators also zeroing in on the cause of a jet liner fire last week in fort lauder dael. a preliminary report says a fuel line became disconnected, burst into flames as it was about to take off from venezuela. 22 people were hurt. a former ceo's golden parachute saves his life.

2-year-old luna died in april after getting into chewing gum. she started vomiting and they rushed her to the vet but it was too late. >> her kidney tests weren't good. they were shutting downnd we didn't have any other choice but to put her down. >> reporter: xylotil is safe for humans but can be cause seizures in dogs. the number of products is on the rise and so are the calls to the aspca's animal poison control center. more than 3700 last year. some animal well fare groups are calling for warning labels on products with xylotil.

that story is next. most nfl teams will not let you bring a water bottle into their stadium. but somehow activists managed to gett sophisticated gear into the panthers. colts game last night. >> reporter: for thousands of fans in bank of america stadium and millions more watching on tv, the question was how did activists repel from the upper deck in the peaceful protest. the nfl proposed new security guide lines that limited fans to only bring clear bags like these into games. and they do pat downs as fans enter relationship. >> i'v've never worked on something with 70,000 people, this many eye balls on what

it was raining in last night's game and fans couldn't even bring in their umbrellas. for an ex-walmart ceo, a parachute was worth its weight in gold. he popped an emergency parachute and made the plane make a slow up. simon, two others on board and the pick up driver were treated for minor injuries.

good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning, police officials north of chicago will reportedly announce that an officer whose shooting death led to a massive manhunt actually killed himself. lieutenant joe gliniewicz died two months ago and that led to a search involving hundreds of officers. brad edwards of our chicago station be wbbm has our report. >> reporter: the question for two long months, what happened to lieutenant "g.i. joe" gliniewicz shot to death after he reported he was chasing three men, two white, one black, in a marshy woodland. >> joe was my world. my world got a little bit smaller with his passing. >> reporter: sources now tell us it appears to be a suicide. more than 400 cops initially searched for fugitives and residents were on edge. but there was little outwardly

that pointed to murder. there was, however, infighting when the coroner mentioned details about the death. >> we are not going to comment on what the coroner said. >> i'd say more the word for that would be responsible. we don't deal off of assumptions. we don't work case off of assumptions. we work cases off of facts. >> reporter: the 52-year-old lieutenant was shot twice with his own 42-caliber pistol. once in his vest, once in his chest. officially on the record, authorities will only say that the investigation has concluded and they will lay out all of the details this morning. in fox lake, i'm brad edwards for cbs news. >> we will have more on the circumstances surrounding the death of lieutenant joe gliniewicz coming up on "cbs this morning." this morning, supporters of a ballot proposal that would have legalized the use of

its defeat a bimpump in the road. it would have legalized the medical use of pot. the vote was not close. adriana diaz is in columbus, ohio. >> the work continues. it's not over. >> reporter: supporters of a plan to legalize marijuana in ohio are vowing to keep up the fight, even though voters issued a resounding no to legalization on tuesday. ian james, the executive director of responsible to ohio helped bring the issue to the ballot. >> there are people who have a they need the passionate care that medical marijuana provides. >> reporter: ohio governor and republican presidential candidate john kasich were among those that worried the measure would do more harm than good. saying in a statement, it would be easy access to drugs. >> i voted yes on issue two and no on issue three. >> reporter: voters instead passed a measure to prevent monopolies in the state. it would have only allowed a small group of private investors to exclusively grow and sell marijuana.

>> the competition in every aspect is -- is a good deal for businesses and it's a good deal for the citizens. >> i'm nick lachey. ohio is my home. >> reporter: singer and reality star nick lachey was among those who bankrolled the campaign for legal saigs. following the vote, the former lead singer of 98 degrees, he took to twitter saying, in part, change takes time. adriana diaz, cbs news, columbus, ohio. in neighboring kentucky, voters elected a republican governor. only the second time that has happened in 40 years. bevin defeated conway. bevin is a 48-year-old investment banker who never held public office and campaigned on his personal story. the adoption of four children and his christian faith, more than his policies. an ordinance that would have protected gays and transgender people from discrimination was easily defeated in houston. supporters say the houston equal rights ordinance would have

against discrimination based on sex, race, age, and religion. opponents focused on part of the measure relating to the use of public restrooms by transgender men and women allowed it would allow sexual predators to enter women's restrooms. now to the election. a year from now, donald trump says he will advertise soon in the first states to vote in the republican nominating race. up until now, trump relied on the media and others to promote his campaign. trump also unveiled his new book. as don champion reports, he took an opportunity to knock his white house rivals. >> i think marco is highly overrated. ben carson does not have that energy. i think beating hillary clinton is going to be easy. my jeb impression? no, i don't want to do that. i don't like showing a person sleeping at a podium. >> reporter: the bush campaign is struggling to gain a foothold. >> this is not about me. in fact, it's not about the politicians with the great

lines. it's not about the big personalities on the stage. it's a lot -- it's about people that are struggling right now. >> reporter: after dominating opinion polls through the summer, two national polls now have trump trailing ben carson, with marco rubio gaining ground. >> i think people are looking for some truth, some honesty, integrity, and i believe that that is something that, hopefully, that i offer to them. >> reporter: a new nbc/"wall street journal" poll has carson tied with hillary clinton in a race. clinton leads trump by eight points. another poll shows clinton with a three-point lead over bernie sanders in new hampshire. she trailed by three in september. the surge is a result of regained support from female voters. >> i don't think it's enough that the granddaughter of a former president has opportunities. i want the granddaughters of

factory workers and the grandsons of truckdrivers to opportunities. debate is scheduled for november 14th. new hampshire voters go to the polls february 9th. by the way, donald trump's book is published by simon and shuster, a division of cbs. >> thank you, don champion, in homework. this morning, the air force is trying to figure out why one of its rockets failed in mid flight. the ors4 super strypi lifted off from a naval base in hawaii late yesterday. shortly after liftoff, the rocket broke up in mid flight and there were 15 small satellites on board. russians have broadened the search after a plane crashed. all 224 people on board a russian flight were killed. 33 have been identified. a u.s. satellite detected heat around the airbus before it crashed on the sinai peninsula and that could indicate a bomb or an engine explosion.

missile strike. the national transportation safety board says a disconnected fuel line was discovered on an airliner that caught fire at a florida airport last week. the dynamic international airways boeing 767 was headed to venezuela from ft. lauderdale. 101 people on board escaped by using emergency chutes. be winter storm warnings are in effect in the mountain west. a storm system will bring a foot or more of snow to eastern utah and much of the colorado rockies. some ski resorts in california's mountains are preparing to open early this week. they are making snow near lake tahoe to supplement the wintry blast. some places got up to 30 inches of snow. the number of people sickened in the chipotle e. coli outbreak is growing. more than three dozen confirmed cases in oregon and washington and the outbreak has forced the chain to close 43 restaurants in the pacific northwest.

the deal also includes an option for movie and tv projects. he left "the daily show" in august after 16 years. glad we will be able to see him again. vegans can say cheers to a famous beer. heavy fine. jill wagner is at the new york more. good morning. >> u.s. safety officials fined the japanese air bag maker exploding air bags. for years they hid evidence that its air bags could explode. eight deaths and more than a hundred injuries are linked to the problem. takata agreed to phase out the faulty air bags and has two to rereace those still in use. the penalty could increase to $200 million if takata fails to live up to the agreement. meanwhile, honda says it is dropping takata as an air bag supplier. more trouble at volkswagen. they have found 800,000 vehicles with emission problems.

volkswagen did not identify the vehicles but said most are diesel engines. the automaker already admitted it installed software in many of its vehicles designed to deceive u.s. emissions test. rising oil prices sent energy stocks higher and that pushed up stocks on wall street. dow rose 89 points. the s&p finished five points higher. the nasdaq rose nearly 18 points. a victory for air b&b. san francisco voters rejected a ballot measure that would have restricted air b&b and other short-term rental platforms. proposition would have limited home shares to 75 nights and require air b&b to pull listings that exceed that limit. they blame short-term rentals for squeezing the city's already tight housing markets. changes at twitter. hearts are in and stars are out. little red hearts replace gold stars on twitter. the hearts will appear where the stars once did underneath tweets. the favorite section is renamed likes.

as former walmart ceo bill simon. simon and two others on the plane, along with a woman in a truck hit by the aircraft, were all taken to the hospital. their injuries are reported to be minor. of a boy at football practice. the sheriff says wyatt barber collapsed to the ground on monday after performing sprints. coaches performed cpr on the third grader. they say there was no physical contact on the light practice. the "los angeles times" reports movie director quentin tarantino broke his silence on undercover cops. he at a rally last month in new york city. on tuesday, he told "the times" quote, all cops are not murderers.
