shortfdll through a property tax levy before it was defeated. defeated.supporters were at parlor city last night -- hoping for a victory celebration.it was obvious pretty quick that there weren't enough yes votes for the simple majority they needed. "i think it's obvious this town still has a long way to go. i think that the community really rallied behind it leading up to this night. so i think for a lot this night. so i think for a lot ofofs it's a real big surprise. i think it just shows there's still a lot of work to do in this town. i think i want people to know it's not going to slow us down. we know the right thing to do and we'll continin to work towards that." supporters say without the levy the library might need to cut hours and services at the main and ladd libraries -- but theye ill looking for other ways to stop that from happening. there were also some city council spots up in cedar rapids.in district four -- incumbent councilman scott olson faced a challenge by

kuzela.olson won with 54- percent of the vote. vote.for the city's two at-large spots, incumbents ann poe and susie weinacht were challenged by three contenders.both kept their seats -- weinacht by about 6- hundred votes. in marion, marion,mayor snooks bouska announced earlier this year he would not seek re-election.so three people were looking to take his place -- including two current members of the city council councilnick abouassaly from the council won with 46- percent of the vote. there were also a pair of council races in marion. incumbent kim etzel edged out ward one. one.e.in ward three -- current council member cody crawford did not seek re election.will brandt narrowly won that seat by just *35 votes over kay lammers. city...incumbent r rk dobyns lost his council seat in ward a to pauline taylor by 10 percent of the vote. vote.in ward c -- john thomas fendedff scott mcdonougby a few hundred votes. votes.in the at-large race --

the trial for a man accused of committing rder in broad daylight continues today.on tuesday -- the trial for nicholas luerkens began with opening statements and then moved on to testimony from witnesses. witnesses.luerkens is facing a first degree m mder charge for the stabbing death of lindsey donald. donald.she was killed in the hy-vee parking lot in marion back in april. april.jurors tuesday watched ten minutes of surveillance video, showing luerkens circling the parking lot before the attack..hy-vee employees and police officers responding to the scene described what they saw that day. "she wasn't moving at all. i noticed that she appeared to have a cut to her neck, a very severe laceration, she wasn't breathing, she wasn't moving." moving."officer nick martens described how hy-vee employees pinned luerkens to the ground.. they sayaye was screaming and had blood on his shorts and they later found out he stabbed himself as well.if
