we're a year away from the presidential election in 2016 -- but many voters still turned out to decide local elections last night. in o o of the biggest items on the ballot in cedar rapids -- voters *rejected a proposal to help fund public libraries. libraries.supporters were

shortfdll through a property tax levy before it was defeated. defeated.supporters were at parlor city last night -- hoping for a victory celebration.it was obvious pretty quick that there weren't enough yes votes for the simple majority they needed. "i think it's obvious this town still has a long way to go. i think that the community really rallied behind it leading up to this night. so i think for a lot this night. so i think for a lot ofofs it's a real big surprise. i think it just shows there's still a lot of work to do in this town. i think i want people to know it's not going to slow us down. we know the right thing to do and we'll continin to work towards that." supporters say without the levy the library might need to cut hours and services at the main and ladd libraries -- but theye ill looking for other ways to stop that from happening. there were also some city council spots up in cedar rapids.in district four -- incumbent councilman scott olson faced a challenge by

kuzela.olson won with 54- percent of the vote. vote.for the city's two at-large spots, incumbents ann poe and susie weinacht were challenged by three contenders.both kept their seats -- weinacht by about 6- hundred votes. in marion, marion,mayor snooks bouska announced earlier this year he would not seek re-election.so three people were looking to take his place -- including two current members of the city council councilnick abouassaly from the council won with 46- percent of the vote. there were also a pair of council races in marion. incumbent kim etzel edged out ward one. one.e.in ward three -- current council member cody crawford did not seek re election.will brandt narrowly won that seat by just *35 votes over kay lammers. city...incumbent r rk dobyns lost his council seat in ward a to pauline taylor by 10 percent of the vote. vote.in ward c -- john thomas fendedff scott mcdonougby a few hundred votes. votes.in the at-large race --

two incumbents wewe hoping to hang onto their seats -- but only jim throgmorton did. newcomer rockne cole took the other at-large seat. in black hawk county... county...waterloo voters were trying to elect a new mayor . five candidates were s sking to become the city's 40th mayor but we don't know who won quite yet.quentin hart got the most votes -- but not enough to prevent a runoff vote against tim hurley -- who was waterloo's mayor for three terms from 2004 to 2009.the winner will be figured out in a december first runoff.they will succeed mayor buck clark -- who is stepping down after six years. in cedar falls,long-time mayor jon crews is seeking a *16th term.he was challenged by cedar falls school board member jim brown and david halterman.mayor crews did *not* get the most votes but that race is als heheing to a runoff. in dubuque dubuquea pair of city council incumbents are defeated.karla braig in ward 2 was unseated by luis del toro with 73- percent of#the vote. vote.in ward four -- jake rios

"issue 3 was designed and built primarily to garner massive and exclusive profits for a small group of self- selected althy investors. issue 3 was about greed, not good public policy." policy."supporters say this was only the beginning -- and they plan to continue the push to make marijuana legal.this was the only state-wide measure on marijuana, in the

in kentucky -- republican matt bevin will be the new governor of the bluegrass state.last year -- he tried to unseat current senate majority leader mitch mcmcnnell.bevin is only the second republican kentucky governor in *four decades. in houston -- voters have turned down the houston equal rights ordinance.it was designed to protect lesbian -- gay and transgender people..the w was passed by the city last year -- but tuesday's vote repealed it. in just a few months -- medicaid in iowa will be transitioning to private management.some state lawmakers were looking to delay that process. process.democrats on the health policy oversight committee tried to pass a motion asking governor terry branstad to hold off on implementing hs plan to privatize medicaid.republicans on the committee opposed d e motion -- and blblked it.the governor's plan has drawn scrutiny over the projected cost savings, and also how it would impact the 560-thousand iowans who use the health care system.the transition will begin on january first. the latest details on the

to much of the world - reg foggerdy is now the "ant man". the 62 year old grandfather survived for 6 days in australia's outbacka&on nothing but - you guessed it - antsa& a trick he learned from watching survival expert bear grylls on television.(reg foggerdy, outback survivor) "there was a big hole there and i got the stick and gave it the em and all these ants came up and i ate quite a lot that day."fofoerdey was hunting wild camels with his brother last month. he shot one but it ran off and he got lost chasing after it.he spent the next 6 days with the cal's body.(reg foggerdy, outback survivor) ) didn't have a knife and i didnt have matches for a fire. so i couldnt go over and cut a steak off the animal. i had no way to cook it and not way way to cook it and not way to cut it."a massive air and land search was launched for fogerdey... his family fearing the worst.(ray foggerdy, brother) "that time he was out there... those were the hardest days of my life."near

the trial for a man accused of committing rder in broad daylight continues today.on tuesday -- the trial for nicholas luerkens began with opening statements and then moved on to testimony from witnesses. witnesses.luerkens is facing a first degree m mder charge for the stabbing death of lindsey donald. donald.she was killed in the hy-vee parking lot in marion back in april. april.jurors tuesday watched ten minutes of surveillance video, showing luerkens circling the parking lot before the attack..hy-vee employees and police officers responding to the scene described what they saw that day. "she wasn't moving at all. i noticed that she appeared to have a cut to her neck, a very severe laceration, she wasn't breathing, she wasn't moving." moving."officer nick martens described how hy-vee employees pinned luerkens to the ground.. they sayaye was screaming and had blood on his shorts and they later found out he stabbed himself as well.if
