(show morgan oogling over him) he's morgan's first baby so you can imagine how many questions she had. being part of a group in waterloo called centering pregnancy was a huge help to her. amy wright: centering pregnancy is a model of health care that's really coming into the u-s with some force. along with going to their scheduled checkups, expectant mothers also attend an educational group. it's the same number of appointments they have with the one on one but instead in a setting where the women all come together and share their experiences together.i think for a first time it was really good. it just made me feel more comfortable with what i was going through.the women hear from several experts like dieticians and lactation consultants. and they hold each other accountable with taking care of their bodies. during each meeting they take their weight and blood pressure.a lot of times they'll be like i just gained 10 pounds another participant next to them will be like girl
6:15 am
center has even found some interesting stats showing how centering improves birth weight and breastfeeding rates. the key outcomes that we have been seeing is black hawk county historically has the average low birthrate rating within babies that are born here in the county. so we are finding the average weight for babies is about half a pound more for those that are more for half a pound babies is about half a pound more for those that are in centering than participants that aren't in centering.and 60 percent of women who are in the program end up breastfeeding their babies as opposed to 40 percent who just go to the clinic. we talk a lot about meeting our nutritional needs in group. we also provide them with healthy snacks to demonstrate. : it made me more comfortable in this crazy pregnancy thing i was going through.this particualr group was diverse. they are each in different stages of life and different ages. morgan said the group was intimate and she knows they all felt comfortable asking questions together. i thought it was really neat to hear what they were going through and how

they're preparing and different things they had come up with that i hadn't thought of. they came they laugh they giggle they cry they grow together they watch eachother grow together and it forms things they'll never forget.:10 it was fun coming i always looked forward to it. this group was made possible because of a grant from the march of dimes. dimes.leaders of centering pregnancy hope to see more of these groups pop up around iowa.if you'd like more information visit this story on our website. it's coming up... up...the steps the university of iowa is taking to recognize local heroes on veterans day. day.in your cbs 2 weather first in your cbs 2 weather
