6:11 am
welcome back -- it's now we're taking a look at your_______ your_______ veterans day is a day to pause and remember the brave men and women who serve our country. country.i sat down with two men who are leading the charge to honor them year-round in
6:12 am
a date that would forever live in infmany. december 7th. the attack on pearl harbor and the beginning of world war 2.the korean war in the 50sand the controversial war that divided a nation. the vietnam war.all of the men and women who served in these conflicts as well as those who continue to serve are rememberd. some of whom, didn't get a thank you when they came home.a movement six years in the making continues to thank these veterans in one of the most honorable ways possible. of course we're talking about the eastern iowa honor flight.the american legion i have many ww2 veterans, korean war veterans, vietnam veterans that i know personally. and a lot of these folks have been through a lot of stuff. and they very rarely talk about it unless they're with another group of veterans. i wasn't really in combat. i want to let ya know that. i drank a lot of coffee. i was on an aircraft carrier and we were
6:13 am
was never shot at. i had three squares a day and a clean sheet every night. but i was overseas when the vietnam war started.george you weren't able to go and serve but here you are, knocking on doors, you're beating the drum to keep this program growing in more than six years. absolutely. its become almost my reason for being. because when i walk up to a veteran at the marine corps memorial, shake his hand, thank him for his service, and he's crying and he says the first people that thanked me for what i did since i came home in 1946.this takes a lot of money to be able to take people who are very deserving of this, but its not a cheap fee to be able to take this trip.each trip is approximately $80,000 and typically what we ask the guardians to pay is their fair-share covers 1/3 of that
6:14 am
are covered by individual donations.you'd be amazed at the number of $50 or $100 donations that come in and builds rather rapidly. once we have the money for the flight, we'll schedule it. our veterans are some of the most selfless individuals that i've ever met. they don't ask for anything. we will get a thank you note from a veteran, he'll have a $100 check in there. says i want another veteran to experience what i've experienced.a lot of the veterans feel its one of the best days of their life. they've been recognized. its really heartwarming for us.a way to say thank you to a soldier who has certainly earned the honor of being called a hero. a one-day trip that leaves a lifetime impressionif you have problems walking, don't let that bother you. we'll take care of you. we have medical staff onboard, we will take care of your needs. we want to see you on the flight. i had a good
6:15 am
a korean war veteran, and a vietnam veteran. his infant daughter is buried in arlington and i had a contact in dc find the grave. he hasn't seen his daughters grave for 20-30 years. we took him to that grave. that's the kind of stuff that really makes an impact. another memory that i will always keep is at the ww2 memorial, you'll see a veteran walking around, and he'll come to a battle or a theatre that he served with. and he just stops. and you see him go, sigh. he just drops his head. and he goes back in time and reminisces. uma& it gets me every time. ((vo of soldier grave or memoral service))audio of ending of 'taps' fulla& fade to black as mentioned earlier, you can help the eastern iowa honor flight by logging onto

special thank you to the five sullivan brothers museum in waterloo for allowing us the space for the interivew with george and roger. they will be open tomorrow and any veteran or service member currently serving is invited to see the displays in their honor free of charge. it's after the break... break...how one wisconsin man is going bigger than everyone else showing his patriotism this veterans day.in your cbs 2 weather first forecast we

parents have enough to worry about, but now even the foods that they think are healthy
6:18 am
might not be! be!a new study from dartmouth university found that parents are increasingly being targeted by advertisers who want them to believe snacks are healthy even if they aren't.the researchers looked at 51 food products intended for children...and found half of those are also advertised to parents. the adult commercials had scenes of parental figures playing with kids...and emphasized health benefits.but the problem is that researchers say many of the snacks advertised didnt meet federal standards for healthy snacks. the found ads aimed at parents are on the rise....making it very hard for adults to sift through all the health claims.the study didnt examine how effective the ads are at getting adults
