across iowa after strong storms tore through the state. let's get right to chief meteorlogist terry swails who's been tracking these

this series of fast moving storms didn't just hit eastern iowa. iowa.this is video from west des moines where they saw winds reaching peaks of 70 miles an hour in some areas. these are images sent to us from a viewer in fairfax.high winds there ripped off the roof of a machine shed. and here's video from coralville.adam peters posted this to twitter as he was sitting through what he described as sideways rain, hail and high winds on the coralville strip. there was a blackout today in iowa city.but it had nothing to do with the weather. weather.this one involved a group at the university of iowa showing their support for

campus.cbs 2 news reporter dora miller is in the newsroom tonight with more, dora? the university of missouri has been under fire for the way they've handled racist incidents.people at u-i say they're only one step from being in the same boat. boat. "no justice, no peace! no justice, no peace!" peace!" "it's important that we share their message because it's the same message."the shouts on the university of iowa campus were the opposite of what university of missouri students heard on wednesday. after gaining national attention for the way racist incidents were handled at mizzou, u-i students felt it was time to speak up. up. "we're family, we're black hawkeyes, we support the people in mizzou, we love y'all." y'all.""everybody deserves the right to higher education and they shouldn't feel scared to be on campus."students say the discrimination doesn't end at mizzou... mizzou... his word cannot be trusted, the world turns into chaos." chaos."he touched on everything from foreign policy to education reform in his town hall.tomorrow, he's in cedar rapids at kirkwood community college talking about entitlement reform. hillary clinton, meanwhile, is receiving a big endorsement. retired four star u-s army general wesley clark made stops on her behalf all around central and eastern iowa today. in iowa city -the city council approved the first reading for an extension of the iowa city downtown self-supported municipal improvement district levy.if approved, it will continue the levy - which is two dollars per one thousand dollars of taxable value on property - through 20-20 with the option to increase 50- cents per one thousand dollars in 2021. in marion marionresidents got to give their input on the design of the new library.the city decided it would be better to build a new library than renovate the curent library. this third session focused on the exterior design of the building. in cedar rapids rapidsone of the corridor's largest property management firms is on the move.last january, high property management's building was determined a total loss after a fire on c-street in northeast cedar rapids. now, the company is moving into the coventry building in downtown cedar rapids. all across the corridor businesses honored veterans

with a variety of free services on this veterans day. hy-vee offered free breakfast for veterans, active military members and their spouses.and all cedar rapids great clips locations offerer veterans free haircuts. while the nation honors veterans today todaysome members of the military are preparing right now for deployment to afghanistan. the army reserve 649th regional support group will be helping with base life as part of operation enduring freedom. that means they're making sure soldiers returning from missions have things like a warm meal and a bed ready.the 40-soldiers in the group will be deployed for about a year. as we honor our veterans today this year marks the 50th anniversary of the start of the vietnam war and the 40th anniversary of the end. while it's a time to remember, some have tried hard to forget.tonight cbs2 news reporter matt hammill introduces you to four people in the corridor impacted in very different ways - -

play, at the r-h-c-r threatre - featured the vietnam war experiences of 18 different iowans.profits from the show were donated to healing our heroes of cedar rapids. students at metro high school got the chance to learn about careers in the military, along with other college and career options with a career and college readiness night.
