new this morning, a pedestrian was killed overnight in the corridor when she was hit by a semi. semi.the linn county sheriff's office tells cbs 2 news it happened along highway 30 near the entrance of palisades

kepler state park. park.authorities say the woman was in the eastbound lanes. here's a look at where the accident took place.the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.her name is not being released until her family is notified.the driver of the semi was not injured. authorities closed eastbound traffic last night, but it is back open this morning. also new this morning in iowa city citypolice are searching for 3 armed robbery suspects. about 1 this morning, an officer responded to a home on south dodge street.a person reported that three black males had kicked in their front door, demanding cash and other r ems.one had a handgun. anyone with information on this is asked to call iowa city-p-d.theres a 1-thousand dollar cash reward for any details leading to an arrest. severe weather hit the corridor hard last ght. here's a few images from storm damage in fairfax, sent in by a viewer.high winds ripped off the roof of a machine shed.and here's video from coralville, adam peters posted this to twitter as he was sitting

through heavy rainfall, hail and high winds on the coralville strip. one of the hardest hit areas last night was in des moines -- where a tornado touched down at theheirport.widespread damage was reported in neighborhoods around the metro area and in nearby knoxville -- where witnesses say a tornado ripped part of the roof off a walmart.some schools heldldtudents til e storm was gone -- they were released around 4 p-m.no serious injuries have been reported. state troopers say a possible tornado is to blame for pushing over this semi-trailer on interstate 80 -- about 40 miles east of council bluffs. the driver wasn't hurt. in case you needed a reminder that winter is on its way, in omaha -- some snow fell with the high winds and rain wednesday night.that was after severe weather and heavy rains fell during the day too. new details, on the white student accused of making online threats to toblack students at the university of missouri.hunter park willllppear in court this morning to face charges of making a terrorist threat. threat.authorities say he

quote- "shoot every black person i see."while the threat was made to the flagship university in lumbia, park went to missouri university of science and technology, in rolla which is about two hours south. tensions have been high at the college, two high ranking school officials even resigned earlier this week, over the way racist incidents were handled.now, students at the university of iowa have decided to stand with mizzou protestors. protestors.more than 50 students and alui wore all black to support those who feel attacked because of their race, specifically african americans.many of the people who attended the blackout yesterday say mizzou isn't alone -- it only takes one incident f f the u-i i be in the same situation. "as most predominantely white institutions like iowa is and mizzou is then you'll have the same things kind of happening and so almost as a message to our campus, that we're fighting for equality and freedom and to be able to sit in our classrooms and not be ostracized and marginalized." marginalized."the students say

they hope to have more events like this s the future. in cedar rapids -- people of all ages were celebrating veterans day. one of the area's oldest veterans -- 94-year-old donald marx -- was recognized for his service during world war two. the entire audience at the veterans memorial buildingng downtown gave him a standing ovation for his service and sacrifice. larry van lanckerwas also recognized for the work he does helping stock food pantries for vets. he received the "veteran of the year award."his grandson -- jackson -- asked his mom if he could skip school to be part of the once-in-a-lifetime moment. it just makes me feel really great to know that the community isishelping out our veterans, and that veterans are being recognized for their services. and for what they do for other veterans in our community." community."larry holds a fundraiser each year to help stock the veteran's food pantry. you can learn more about that, on our website cbs2 iowa dot com. about 40 army reserve soldiers prepared for their deployment to afghanistan n veverns day.

in a few days to support operation enduring freedom.the 649th regional support group is going to be making sure every soldier has a bed -- a warm meal and safe environment when they come back from missions.one soldier says veterans day isn't just about recognizing service men and women -- but also the people who make it possible for them to do their jobs. 00:16 the backbone of the military is their service members. the support of the service members comes from their family and their families are able to support them because of the communities that they live in. in.the soldiers are expected to be gone for about a year. several vehicles have been removed now from fromthat gaping hole in the parking lot of an ihop in mississippi.you might remember it caved in last weekend.the hole is about 30 feet the hole is about 30 feet deep and 37575 feet long.it swallowed at least 12 vehicles.authorities believe it was likely the result of a likely the result of a drain collapsing because of construction in the area.no one was injured.

new poll numbers out this morning from a cbs -new york times poll that was just released. hillary clinton still has a sizable lead on bernie sanders. clinton has 52-percent support. bernie sanders is sitting at 33-percent. new this morning -- authorities say three threeofficers in san francisco killed a man who was pointing a rifle at a hospital from the top of a nearby construction site. site.police say the man opened fire on officers who wewe responding.investigators believe the gunman came to the site after he stole the rifle and ammo from a sporting goods store.the hospital was put on lock down for about an hour.no word yet on a potential motive, nobody else was hurt. a follow up to u-s airstrikes airstrikesthat killed at least 30 people at a charity hospital. hospital.afghanistan's national security adviser said they were convinced the hospital was occupiedy the taliban.more than a month later -- no evidence has emerged to support that claim. instead -- there's mounting evidence u-s troops didn't

and relied heavily on afghan allies -- who resented the internationally run hospital. the hospital treated both afghan and taliban forces. a man being investigated in the shooting of a texas judge last week has been charged with murder in an unrereated case. case.judge julie kokurek was shot in her driveway -- she survived but is still in the hospital.court records show the judge issued a warrant for the suspect's arrest in a fraud case.he was due to appear before her next month -- and faces possible prison time after violating his three-year probation.now he's facing murder charges from an unreleated shooting that happened in may. check out this video from a brush fire in california.it broke out last night and covered about 40 acres of land. fire officials say no structures were threatened, but it could still grow. a wildfire also broke out in oklahoho..it prompted the evacuation of several people in the area.fires caused power outages for thousands of people last night, but were not a threat to any surrounding structures.

when a man in maryland learned a fire broke out at his home -- he tried to get there as soon as he could to make sure his kids were safe. safe.but during carlo pettigrew's fast drive home -- he flipped his vehicle -- then crawled out of his overturned car and ran the rest of the half mile to his home. pettigrew wasn't sure if his 13 and 7 year old made it out of the house safe. "everything was in slow motion. i just thought ababt my kids. that i was going to lose my children and i wasn't ready for that." that."firefighters were already putting out the fire when he got there.his two kids were safe -- and pettigrew was later taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries. a florida man is lucky to be alive this morning, after a 7-foot-alligator lunged at him from the water. water."all of a sudden my arm..i'm going like this into the water. i was like oh my gosh what is this? no splash no nothing nonoingluckily, bill's neighbors rushed over to the help.the 7-footer was captured hours later by trappers.but bill holds no hard grudges, he doesn'n'want authorities to put the animal down.
