our first look at dash-camera video from the night a former car salesman was shot by cedar rapids police officers. kyle orth was shot by officers after he w spotted speeding through downtown cedar rapids. rapids..it all went down a aund two-30 in the morning on march 29th near center point road northeast. northeast.cbs 2 news reporter steffi lee has a look at the dramatic video. newly released video shows in the early hours of march 29th - kyle orth sped backwards down this cedar rapids alley with speedsdsp to 30 miles per hoho hoursmashing a utility pole with a borrowed orange bmw from zimmerman auto center - where he was a salesman at the time. time.hey put your hands up - gunfirethat's en cedar rapids police officers jeremy depies and brandon tinta shot orth three times - after he rapidly accelerated towards

away.what ended in gunfire all started when police spotted orth speeding and running red lights throughout cedar rapids - down first avenue near coe college.he goes the wrong way - when police stopped the chase. chase.but the sirens go on again - when police find orth in this alley bween centerpoint road and daniels street.after the officers shot orth - they held him down to control him. him. but orth walked free for more than three months - before linn county attorney jerry vandersanden obtained the iowa dci's report.that's when he charged orth with five counts - assault on a peace officer, interference with official acts, owi and two countstsf eluding.vavaersanden cleared officers jeremy depies (dep-ee-es) and brandon tinta (tent-uh) saying orth's actions put them in danger.in december - orth pleaded guilty - and will now face 180 days in jail for owi and two counts of eluding.steffi lee, cbs 2

the judge alloweweorth to break up his timemen the linn county jail and he is allowed work release.orth also faces a five year suspended sentence and three years probation for a felony charge of interference with official acts. the attorney general's office says a waterloo officer was justified when he shot a suspect last month. today, the office released its review of the case which found the officer did *not break the law. they say the officer shot at a suspect who was driving toward him at a high rate of speed.the officer's name is being withheld because of his position in a drug task force. the department t public safety says he acted reasonably because he thought his life was in danger. a judge has declared a mistrial in the case of the fst baltimore police officer on trial for the death of freddie gray. gray..gray died from a spinal cord injury while in police custody last april.william porter was the first six officers being tried for his

of demonstratatns and rioting in baltimore. tonight, protesters returned but they've remained calm. a judge will decide when porter will be retried but it won't be unl the other five ficers go to court.if convicted, porter could face as many as 25 years in prison. turning now to the war on terror,president obama plans to meet with families of victims of the mass shooting in san bernardino.the meeting is set for friday. the president is adding the stop to a long-scheduled trip to hawaii for christmas vacation. strian authorities have arrested two people connected to the terror attacks last month in paris.according to french tv network b-f-m-tv, the suspects werearresesd in a syrian refugee camp in salzburg, austria.authorities say the pair are originally from france but somehow made their way to the camp from syria. the f-b-i now says the attack

chattanooga, tennessee was 'motivated by' terrorist propagandamohammad youssef abdul-az-eez attacked two military sites in july killing five u.s. service members. the navy announced today, the families of the five killed and a marine will recieve purple hearts. the department of home land security is rolling out a new terror alert system.it will let americans know about possible threats, even before they become credible.a bulletin will be issued when there are current developments or general trends regarding terror threats.this is the first change to the national terrorism advisory system since it replaced the

rallllwith supporters at veterans colliseum in cedar rapids.saturday's event is scheduled to begin at two. recent polls show trunp's suppt slipping in iowa, with texas senator ted cruz pping him in some surveys. last night during this broadcast, cbs 2 news told you about the special election being held in february for the college community school district.the district is looking to pass a 49-point- five-million-dollars bond referendum.to clarify, if the referendum passes property taxes would go up 32-cents per one-thousand-dollars of property value. a new system that evaluates the performance of iowa's public schools is now available online. online.the iowa department of education released the new web-based system.it measures oficiency, graduation rates and attendance.no schools in the cedar rapids district made it to the top tiers of the six-tiered system.if you'd like*to see how your school stacks up, we've put a link to the system on our website, cbs 2 iowa dot com.

a look at tonight's other stories across the corridor. in iowa city,a group is calling on university of iowa president bruce harreld to fire peter matthes.he is vice- president of external relations and is responsible for awarding 321-thousand dollars worth of contraras without a bidding process.the contracts went to companies owned by matt strawn, a republican party consultant. the group, iowans defending our universities, says matthes skirted open bidding laws and policies. leaders in iowa city, have approved plans to help reduce flooding on dubuque street.the city's public works department has been planning the gateway project since 2010. two years after the flood of '08.plans call for elevating parts of dubuque street in the 100 year flood plain seven toto eight feet.they hope to begin construction on the 52-million dollar project next spring.
