the death toll from a series of tornadoes in the southeast that touched down wednesday - has risen to 17.7. two more bodies were found in mississippi, bringing the state's total victims to 10. seven more people died in two different states, including 6 in tennessee.laststight, a tornado touched down in birmingham, alabana, but fortunately there was *not a lot of damage there. in california, a large brush fire that broke out last night is threatening dozens of hohos. in some parts of the area, major highways had to be shut down, and residents are being evacuated.wendy gillette ports (nits helicopter)a helicoer dropped water on fast moving flames in ventura county, california saturday.the fire

heavily used 101 freeway and a portion of the union pacific railroad tracks-- started d christmas night.(sot: chief mark lorenzen/ventura county fire department) "it was pushed by strong northwest winds of 50 miles an hour. the fire quickly grew in size." about 600 firefighters are battling the blaze.they're trying to keep the fire from spreading to nearby homes in the solimar (soul-uh-mahr) beach area.almost 100 houses were evacuated.(sot: fred burris/ventura county fire department) "we have a lot of fuels, lot of light grass, shrubs burning right down on the e coast in and amongst the structures in the solimar community."firefighters are also keeping a close eye on nearby oil fields, as they deal with difficult terrain, high winds and very dry conditions.(sot: norman department) "we actually have had- even though you folks have had pretty good rain in counties, we've literally had about a tenthf an inch in the last 6 weeks."no injuries have been reported. it's unknown what started the fire.wendy gillette, for cbs

fire officials say less than 10 percent of the fire is tained, and expect it will take several days to get it under control. back here in eastern iowa, police in waterloo are investigating g two separate reports of shots fired. police tell cbs 2 news, the first was a call from the 500 block of keystone street around 2-15 yesterday afternoon. they say someone in a car shot *at another person, but nobody was actually hit. officers say the man targeted is *not cooperating later on - just before midnight - police were called to a home on lafayette street, after a window was shot out. there was also a car hit. police say the witnesses at that scene are also not co- operating. so far no arrests have been made in either case. in chicago, two people are dead after a police-involved shooting. shooting.it happened early this morning near west garfield park on the ity's west side, after police responded to what they descscbed as a "d"destic disturbance."officers say once
