hawkeyes battle it out in the rose bowl, but before the big game, comes a big parade. all those beautiful floats will go rolling down colorado boulevard on new years day - and one float in this year's rose parade will feature the art of one eastern iowa florist. florist.cbs 2 news reporter steffi lee is here to tell us why it's extra special r the florist this year. this eastern iowa florist starts putting his skills to work in sunny california tomorrow.he's a paid designer with fiesta parade floatstseven though it's not his first time there - his excitement will make you think otherwise. otherwise. "well we're going to win the rose bowl first."the iowa city hyvee floral manager is no stranger to crafting beautiful arrangements for the hawkeyes - -like this assortment of yellow roses when the team came home from the big ten championship in indiana. indiana. "laurel is one of the most respected floral managers in our entire company and as a hawkeye fan, he's probably one of the biggest fans i'vet met." and for several years, the avid hawkeye fan's also taken his artistic talents to colorado boulevard - "i guess i can't imagine not going and working on floats." where thousands see e his creatitis in the rose parade. this year - he's looking forward to more than just decorating the floats. floats.a strong season gave him a gut feeling to prepare even earlier for the road to the roses.he booked his flight

police in waterloo are investigating two separate reports of shots fired. police tell cbs 2 news, the first was a call from the 500 block of keystone street around 2-15 yesterday afternoon. they say someone in a car shot *at another person, but nobody was actually hit. officers say the man targeted is *not cooperating later on - just before midnight - police were called to a home on lafayette street, after a window was shot out. there was also a car hit. police say the witnesses at that scene are also not co- operating. so far no arrests have been made in either case. in chicago, two people are dead after a police-involved shooti - and police say one

hit.it happeped early this morning near west garfield park on the city's west side, after police responded to what they described as a "domestic disturbance."officers say once they got there, they und quote "a combative individual." they say an officer fired his weapon, at 19-year-old quintonio legrier, was shot and killed. 55-year-old betttie jones was also shot and killed, but in the last hour the chicago police department has released that her death was an accident. a woman told a local television station she was legrier's mother. she described him as a college student with mental challenges. he was having a mental situation, sometimes he gets a little loud, but not violent. i was just with my son on christmas. i talked to him and told him he has to control his temper." temper."in the past couple hours, we've learned police were involved in *another shooting on the far south

critically wounded. chicago police are already under intense scrutiny, after *other officer-involved shootings in recent months. the death toll from a series of tornadoes in the southeast that touched down wednesday - has risen to 18. two more bodies were found in mississippi, bringing the state's total victims to 10. eight more people died in two different states, including 6 in tennessee.last night, a tornado touched down in birmingham, alabama, but fortunately there was *not a lot of damama there. meanwhile, the national weather service is now confirming that tornadoes touched down in califorina this week. this is cell phone video take in northern california near the fofoom area. the national weather service says the tornado was an e-f 1 and produced wind speeds up to 80 and 90 miles per hour. folks ere are so dealing with a large brush fire that homes. the fire - which shut down parts of the heavily used 101 freeway and a portion of the

started christmas night.600 firefighters are battling the massive blaze.right now, crews don't know the cause of the fire.officials say 60 percent of the fire is contained, and expect it will take several under control. in the race for the white house... house...several presidential hopefuls will be in eastern iowa next week. week.on monday - new jersey governor chris christie will make a couple stops.the first will be in dubuque for a town hall at noon before ending his day in davenport.on tuesday - the republican will be in the corridor.christie will visit the hamburg inn down in iowa city and the field-house in cedar rapids.right now - christie is in the middle-of- the-pack in the g-o-p race. democrat martin o'malley will also be in eastern iowa monday he will be stumping in waterloo and tama.the stops are a part of a four-day swing g through the hawkeye state for the former marlyland governor. his first event in iowa is sunday in des moines.o'malley is in third among the three democrats running.
