cbs 2 news has the latest details now from the campaign trail, trail,where candidates are coming together this morning, to mourn the loss of a volunteer staffer, here in iowa. iowa.presidential hopeful ben carson's campaign is off the trail for at least a day after a 25-year-old volunteer died in a van crash in western iowa. iowa.the state patrol tells cbs 2 news a van carrying

patch of ice on i-80 near atlantic tuesday morning. morning.the van flipped onto its side before it was hit by another vehicle.25-year-old braden joplin was killed in the crash and two other volunteers were hurt.doctor carson flew to an omaha hospital to be with joplin's family. "and our hearts go out to his family and to all the families involved, including the family in the pickup truck. (long pause) you know, life is so fleeting, and we have to make the most of every bit of it that we can." the tragedy brought a rare moment of togetherness among candidates, from both political parties..carson's g-o-p rivals marco rubio, jeb bush and ted cruz offered their condolences and prayers on twitter.along with a a ree democrcric candidtes. many more candidates offered their thoughts and prayers while campaigning throughout the day.

this morning, some iowa city students are returning to school, school,after a bomb threat sent them home early tuesday. tuesday.right now school officials and authorities are following all possible leads, with the goal of finding a suspect. suspect.iowa city police called west high to alert them of the threat around 8:45 yesteday morning.the principal says police sent officers with k-9 units right away to search the building. building.because of the cold temperatures, evacuated students were bussed to the university of iowa hawkeye

the street.that's where they met up with parents or boarded buses to go home.school officials said they weren't taking any chances. our priority is safety and when that happens, sometimes the academic have to take a back seat for part of the day. day.the school opened one entrance to the public at 3:00 in the afternoon and held all scheduled after-school activities. not only were students and faculty evacuated, but a johnson county polling site had to be moved.the school had served as a voting location for a special election.the johnson county auditor re- directed people to vote at the nearby u-of-i athletic hall of fame. now to the results of that special election to fill a vacant seat on the johnson county board of supervisors. lisa green douglas defeated chris hoffman.green-douglas will serve for the rest of terrance neuzil's term -- he recently took an out-of state position.turnout for this race was just more than three- percent. a bank robbery suspect is now sitting in jail after a quick arrest by police. it happened at the u-s bank on william
