the cedar rapids police department or linn county crime stoppers. happenininnow - 200 prison inmates across the state are learning new skills - building to a better future. back in 2014, the department of corrections started a program at t anamosa prison that allows offenders to learn and work at a trade, while incarcerated. it was so successful that by the end of last year, the program had expanded to all nine iowa prisons. these inmates become apprentices in things like cooking, welding or cabinet making. each has a certain set of curriculum hours combined with hands on training. "our program ffuses on helping people, our program focuses on building skill, our program focuses on our mission of no more victims. victims.officials say the goal is to keep offenders from returning to jail by giving them a marketable skill by the time they re-enter society. right now - nearly 30-percent wind up back behind bars.
