g-o-p debate before the iowa caucuses. perhaps the biggest vibration was felt even before tonight's face-off when front runner donald trump pulled out of tonight debate. debate.trump made that decision after fox news channel said it would not remove moderator megyn kelly. the pair began feuding in august when kelly challenged some trumps online comments about women. women.cbs 2 news political reporter kevin barry covering the debate tonight, and he joins us now live from des moines.kevin. one of the most energetic exchanges came over immigration- partially because at least marco rubio and ted cruz have both been involved with legislation in the congress about legislation. that means the senators have been on the record about issues like if a path to citizenship would be an option to people to come to the united states illegally. all that experience in the senate means candidates like rand

department tells cbs 2 news, one man was shot but his condition is unknown tonight. not many other details have been released.authorities have not said whether anyone has been charged in the shooting. also tonight, several *johnson county law enforcement leaders are exploring *options for criminals other than time behind bars.they traveled to san antonio texas to learn new techniques.instead of a traditional police response in many cases, officers there are trained to help people dealing with mental illness, homelessness, substance abuse or developmental disabilities. officers try to deescalate every situation and then get people the help they need. johnson county organizers say jail overcrowding and cost reduction were just some of the reasons for the trip. when people *are incarcerated, resources for coping are few and far between...and for *young offenders, that can make it hard to function after they get out. at the linn county detention center, they're giving young inmates skills they can use now and in the real world. cbs 2 news reporter dora

medical experts here to advise women - especially those who are pregnant - to take extra precautions if they're traveling out of the country anytime soon.health experts are suggesting that pregnant women stay away from the affected areas - since the virus may be linked to birth defects.and while the concern remains far away - doctors in eastern iowa are monitoring the virus from a far, and say the warmer temperatures could bring the same mosquitos north. however, it's still too early to worry, but make sure you use insect repellant and wear long pants and shirts as a precaution. temperatures have been near and above freezing for a few days and the warming trend will continue through this weekend. then our attention is turning to the potential for a strong winter storm next week in the midwest. for today, temperatures were above average and above freezing for all of eastern iowa. temperatures will warm up through the weekend with highs nearing the 40 degree mark and could be above freezing this weekend. after that, there will be a change in the pattern... a big dip in the jet stream coming early next week which could be a winter storm. first there could be a weak system on sunday with some rain and snow, then a strong system increasing rain

cbs 2 news is learning new developments in the on-going standoff at an oregon wildlife refuge.militia members took over that federal land 25-days ago and now we're getting our first look at what happened during a shoot out with police. police.lavoy finicum was shot and killed tuesday when he tried to drive around a roadblock on the wildlife refuge.he and other members of the militia were on their way to a meeting when they were tracked down by police.leader ammon bundy and seven others were arrested during that traffic stop.just last night members to stand down and go home.we are constantly updating this story on cbs 2 iowa dot com and will have the morning. today is a day of remembrance for nasa.30-years ago - the space shuttle challenger
