south and east of the line from cedar raped and dubuque we expect to see snow but it should chain to rain or a mixture of rain and snow so that will cut down accumulations. strong winds will develop late tonight and tomorrow morning could gust up to 30 or 35 miles an hour. and so in those areas where heavier snowfalls there could be some blowing snow. now our predictor here tonight shows the storm working its way on to the north and here we are at midnight just a little bit of light snow trying to show up. i think a lot of that will be aloft but as we get towards morning there's the snow heading into southern iowa and there's the rain down in missouri. andee the snow spreads on through here -- and eventually the snow spreads through but by afternoon a lot of precipitation comes to an end and before that happens, it locks like some of it is actual- - looks like some of it will change over to rain. snow in the north and west. and by the teem it comes out, looks like there could be 8 inch accumulation in the north

clouds are locking in over eastern iowa temperatures at 31 in cedar rap rapids and fog around eastern iowa and low level moisture coming in here now. and that's resulting in the low clouds and fog. our storm system getting organized here over the four corners of the southwest. and getting set to move on to the northeast. as we put the upper air charts in motion you can see the upper air track in western iowa that's a little bit further to the west than we were thinking last week as a result of that, we will get mixed precipitation types over eastern iowa and heavier snows will be across about the northwestern half of iowa so while we will get good snows in parts of the area, it could have been worse in terms of blizzararlike conditions that they will see out this way. as we go to the satellite tonight, notice how the moisture starts to get injest into thesystem snow across nebraska and light rain trying to work towards southern iowa and that will kick in as snow later tonight and spread through the rest of the area
6:13 pm
so i am t expecting anything in the way of precipitation throughout the evening hours tonight. it will be after midnight when that gets going and then as we go into tomorrow the heaviest snow will be across our northern and northwestern counties. in the southeast we will begin snow and eventually change over to rain. and the worst is going to be during the morning and early afternoon and we should get a break in the presip later in the day. where it snows heavily there's going to be gusty winds for a time up to 30 or 35 miles an hour and that could produce some areas of blowing snow. but that's going to be primarily over the northwestern parts of iowa. so here's the predictor here at 7 a.m. tomorrow. you can see some of the snow trying to get into southern iowa. and you don't have to go far south to see rain. and as the storm tracks north it pulls in warmer air and the snow changes over to some rain and especially in the southern eastern counties and then comes to an end in the afternoon as we get dry swatted and that won't be the case in the far north and northwest where the snow continues tomorrow afternoon and evening.
6:14 pm
will occur. i think now the two inch line should be close to cedar rapid and little south of dubuque in the corner about 2 to 3 inches only an inch in the far southern counties and you get to about waterloo and prairie desheen from there on to the northwest that's where i think the 6 inch line should set up. so anywhere north and west of that line 6 to perhaps 8 inches of accumulation. the wore worst is the northwestern counties that's what the in-house model is showing see the lighter alities to the south. tracking northward some places look as 8 maybe 9 i pes of accumulation in some spots. that's where we have winter storm warns out. that's the counties in pink late tonight and during the day tomorrow. there are a little strip through cedar rapid and towards monticello and up towards temah that's where there's going to be tough traveling but in the far southeast no advisories are in effect so the winter storm not going to have too many big
6:15 pm
we are seeing rain show up a little pink coming in here too. so, it will turn into some snow and get around late tonight and early tomorrow morning. but everything out there right now is very light or still up in the clouds as the atmosphere tries to saturate. so the predictor shows the snow then moving into southern iowa around midnight but it is light. it's going to be towards daybreak when the main surge comes through and things will get dicey early tomorrow morning. but eventually look at this, the rain starts to move into eastern iowa and except in the north and northwest. where it will stay mostly snow until later on in the afternoon. and then after that, things turn windy and cold as the storm mobs on out of the area. so the forecast for tonight, call for temperatures to be pretty steady in the upper 20s to lower 30s. snow should develop late tonight. tomorrow morning looks rough around the area. but i think as the day wares on temperatures will warm -- wears on the the temperatures will warm above freezing here is where the snow changes to rain primarily snow off to the north and west.
6:16 pm
than 6 inches. our extended forecast, precip moving out and temperatures after that start to warm up a little bit. we should get readings back up into the 30s here as we push into the upcoming weekend. nice and dry through the evening for caucuses and the storm hits later on and depending on where you are it will be a lot worse especially in the north and west. heavier snows are expected to occur. >> take it slow and easy. >> that's good advice. winter weather is on the move tonight. >> and there's a lot that goes into formulating the hour by hour forecast. mel laney moore has a inside look. >> reporter: weather is part of our lives every hour of every day. >> see it unfold the way you expect it to over 7 or 8 -day period is rewarding. >> reporter: that's what makes meteorology a 24-7 job. >> we are only 24 hours out and it's changing a lot so this is one of the hard to nail down storms right now. people.our weather team...chief meteorologist terry swails...justin
