history, ted cruz boasted he defied the odds. >> every tv pundit on virtually every station said cruz can't win, no chance cruz is going to win iowa, not going to happen. it would be trump, trump. trump. >> reporter: but it wasn't. trump fellll,000 votes short andnd gave an uncommonly subdued concession speech. >> we finished second. i want to till you something, i am just honored. really honored. today the bombast was back. trump complained on twitter he the vors for self funding his campaign and the media has not covered my long shot great finish in iowa fairly. trump called cruz's victory speech, long, rambling and overly flamboyant. the race is quickly becoming a battle among, trump, cruz and marco rubio. the florida senator says he is

>> who is closer now? >> i t tnk i am. we are one delegate apart. second i give us the best chance to unify the party. you can't win if the party is divided but to grow it. >> reporter: rubio's momentum comes with attacks from kasich, bush, and christie who need strong showings in new hampshire >> see if he will answer your questions, stand up and take that. i don't thininhe will or can. >> what do you think that its about? >> sometimes when people are under duress they react in ways they will regret later on. christie finished 10th. cruz worked hard for his victory in iowa. holding 2/3 as many events as trump, a third more than rubio. do the math, trump collected twice as many votes per iowa visit as cruz. >> worth remembering, iowa republicans haven't picked the nominee since 2000. major garrett for us tonight. thank you.

here is nancy cordes. >> i am so thrilled that i am coming to new hampshire after winning iowa! reporter: the first woman ever to win the iowa caucuses diit by .2%. >> senator sanders a a you conceding the race in iowa. >> last i saw we were four delegates down. as the i understand it, there was some precincts where -- delegates were one with the flip of the coin. we want to take a, a l lk at that. >> at least six precincts broke a tie with a coin toss. >> hillary clinton. >> the largegeurnout, evenly split, caused challenges elsewhere too. >> well should a realignment. >> in the end, 84% of young ters, under the age e 30, went for sanders. but 58% of caucus goers were 50 and up. and they went overwhelmingly for clinton.

territory for clinton. the latest cbs news battleground tracker shows sanders leading in new hampshire by 19 points. his democratic socialist message plays well with the state's large independent population. >> it sounds to me like u are ready for a political revolution. >> reporter: sanders also has something of a home field advantage here. he is from neighghring vermont. clinton has the deep ties here too, scott, it is here she staged a come back eight years ago after a stinging loss in iowa. >> nancy cordes, thank you. two casualties of the iowa caucuses, republican mike huckabee who won there eight years ago. he did poorly last nig and dropped out. so did democrat martin o'malley. >> clinton picked up 22 national convention delegates in iowa. sanders, 21. but that's a little misleading because clinton already has 362 superdelegates. party leaders who pledged their

that brings her now to 384 or about 16% of the 2,382 she needs. after new hampshire, the polls indicate the primaries are expected to break clinton's way. on the republican side, cruz picked up eieit delegates, trump, rubio, seven. they need a little over 1,200. so, far to go. john dickerson, our cbs news political director and anchor of "face the nation." john, we heard what a difference an election makes. tell me how has the race changed? what's the new framework? >> we have been talking about the race in terms of establishment, versus the ououider. we shoe look, ideology, versus electability. look at entrance polls in iowa, who shares your val use?

en they were asked who do you think can win in november, the large share went to marco rubio. going into new hampshire, ted cruz is saying i'm the true consistent conservative. the keeper of the flame. rally to my light. marco rubio is saying i can beat hillary clinton. tell me where does this go from here? >> well, marco rubio did well in iowa in part because he did better than expectations. but now he is saying he is in the top tier, he is the alternative to cruz and trump. those expectations are very high. so, he would have to do very well in new hampshire which is a less ideological state. of course he has new competitors there in bush, christie, and kasich. all of whom want to drag him down. of course there its the roiling fight between ted cruz and donald trump. >> john dickerson. watching on sunday on "face the nation." john, thank you so much. the "cbs overnight news" will be

we put the question to dr. thomas frieden who runs the centers for disease control. >> everything we see so far doesn't suggest there will be a widespread outbreak of zika in the u.s. we have two things going for us. first, the mosquitoes are not present at all in most of the country. and they're present in much lower numbers where they are present. second, because people have air conditioning, are inside, legislation crowded than some of the places where zika is spreading soapidly, we are much less likely to have the widespread transmission even in the places where are the mosquitoes that spread t ts virus. >> dr. thomas frieden n the cdc. turning overseas -- there was a bang and suddenly a gaping hole in a jetliner over war torn somalia today. margaret brennan has the that. >> reporter: cell phone video

flight shows oxygen masks fwloeg in the wind near the hole in the airbus 321. some passenger toward the back of the plane can be seen wearing oxygen masks. on the ground the damage to the plane was clearly y sible with pipies of the fuselage c cled out from the body of the plane. all 74 passengers and crew were evacuated. aviation officials say two people were injured. the somali owned airline was on the way from mogadishu to and the diplomat was on the flight and said on facebook he heard a loud noise and couldn't see anything but smoke. after the smoke cleared he realized quite a chunk of the plane was missing. u.s. intelligence officials are aware of reports there may have en an explosion. it is unclear from structural failure. and a terror group controls part of the country and isis is expanding its footprint.

lovell's father david and stepmother terry stayed in touch with the teen through social media but were concerned about her activities on web sites where the family believes she ultimately meteter accused killer. are you aware she was active on these teen flirt sites? >> we know that there were some issues at one time with her on these sites. and we addressed them. and i guess, we didn't do enough. >> reporter: the suspects are being held at this jail without bobo. they have not yet entered a plea, scott. nicole lovell, her funeral will be held thursday.

the iowa caucuses, as they often do, change the game and some candidates hoping to build on momentum and others now find themselves as high-profile targets. weijia jiang is inmanchester, new hashire. good morning. reporter: good morning to everybody. texaxasenator ted cruz says he was able to win iowa with a strong ground game, something donald trump was criticized for not having. trump also ditched the last debate before the iowa caucuses. it's a decision he now says he does not rret, but admits it might have cost him the state as he aggressively tries to rebound. donald trump took to the campaign trail in milford, new hampshire, tuesday, brushing off his second place standing in iowa and downplalang marco rubio's third place finish. >> he comes in third. i come in second. trump, no good. rubio, unbelievable night! unbelievable victory. unbelievable!

parts of louisiana, mississippi, and alabama. don champion has our report. >> reporter: a large destructive tornado hit western alabama late yesterday. >> thank god we, you know, we are all -- we were all okay. that is the main thing any time you have a storm. >> reporter: it left a trail of damage about 45 miles west of tuscaloosa. mobile homes, trees and power lines s re destroyed but no injuries reported. >> alajama not as bad as oklahoma or texaxabut when we haha one, it's usually bad. >> reporter:r:t was one of several tornadoes to touch down in the south. at least eight were reported in mississippi, sending residents scrambling for safety. >> we got in our truck with our grandson coming to our storm pit. as luck would hahe it, we never made it to the storm pit. the tornado picked us up and turned us before the land hit us. >> reporter: there are no reports of serious injury, but just east of jackson, severe

several people had to be rescued. in the midwest, the issue is heavy snow and strong winds. there were whiteout conditions from nebraska to michigan. in nebraska, more than a foot of snow fell, drifts were several feet deep. in wisconsin, the flakes came fast and furious. >> all of a sudden, it's just like somebody snapped their fingers and she was coming down in pretty big flakes. >> r rorter: there are bliliard condititns in southwestern minnesota where folks are being advised to stay off the roads. more than 10 inches of snow has fallen and several highways have been shut down. here in the e st, no big worries about snow, at least for now. in fact, record highs could be set and temperatures could reach into the 60s in new york and washington today. 70s in the southeast. anne-marie, let's hit the road. >> my goodness. don champion here in new york, i think it's a great idea. in the coming days, centers for disease control says it will issue guidelines on the prevention of ththsexual transmission. zika virus. health official in texas

accounted for. under investigation. a pretrial hearing in bill resumes today in pennsylvania. cosby was arrested and charged in december with drugging and sexually assaulting a temple university employee in 2004. cosby wants the case thrown out because of a deal made with the former disisict attorney. the judge could decide as early as today. a denver broncos player is sent home from the super bowl this morning amid a prostution scandal. ryan murphy, a safety on the broncos practice squad, was detained by not arrested during a sting operation tuesday night. jamie yuccas is in s francisco, the super bowl city, with the details. jamie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. investigators let ryan murphy go without citing him, once it was determined he was not involved in any illegal activity, but all of the negative attention ahead of the biggest game of the year bought him a one-way ticket back home to denver.

autopsy shows that nicole lovell was stabbed on the day she went missing. virginia tech freshman david eisenhauer is accused of kidnapping and murdering the 13-year-old. the girl's mother was overcome tuesday, talking about her daughter. >> nicole was a very loveable person. nicole touched many people throughout her short life. >> another virginia tech ststent, natalie keepers, faces a new, more serious charge, that could mean a life sentence if she is convicted. florida "sun sentinel" reports on a small plane crash the ocean off miamimieach. within minutes of going down tuesday, the single-engine plane was submerged. witnesses phphos show the scene as the pilot and passenger made it to a wing. a lifeguard helped them make it safely to shore. >> they are really lucky, you know? when you hit the water, it's like concrete. when you hit that water with that speed.
