dropping below zero and the windchill could get dangerously cold. windchill advisories already in effect and they are in effect until tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. wind chills could get as cold 20 -- temperatures have been falling through the night, single dig digits across all of iowa. 9 in iowa city and the winds are taking at around 9 miles per hour now and they will pick up later on tonight. gusts could get as high as0 miles per hour. so that will lead to a wind chill below zero. 17 below in -- 10 below in cedar rapids right now. we are also tracking some snow, though, in the area for tomorrow. i'll break down all the details coming up.

for years now the use of traffic enforcement cameras has made for a lot of controversy. if you got a ticket in the mail you may have thought you had to pay it. that's not the case. reporter dora miller is live the clear up the miss conception. >> listen to these numbers, just one half of one% of drivers actually get these tickets in the mail. but if you are part of that small percentage, take a listen. >> so a traffic camera caught you speeding. you only realize that when you find the dreaded citation in the mail. . >> i have gotten a couple. >> but that $75 is burning a hole in your pocket. >> i can't remember what happens if you don't pay it.

>> the hammer in the past has been it will affect your credit rating so if you were out to ok for a loan, there would be this on your record. >> now mayor says thatcamera has lost its impact. >> the city will attempt to collect on that fine, and if people still don't pay, then thonly other resource the city would have would be to take the individual to court. >> in the big scheme of things, corbet said that's not an option the city plans to explore. >> we are not going to go through the legal expense of trying to take someone to court for $75. that doesn't make any financial sense. >> last year a court ruling that the city could turn over unpaid tickets to a collection agency.

that doesn't go against your driving record. now it doesn't go against your credit record. >> that's really good news. >> a lot of people can't afford $75. >> people won't get a ticket if million dollars to the budget for speeding ticket payments. so the mayor still advises paying your ticket...and clear your conscience.covering the corridor in cedar rapids, dora miller, cbs 2 news new tonight - students at a washington county school are mourning the loss of a classmate. mid-prairie superintendent mark schneider tells cbs 2 news, the school was locked down yesterday because a student was reported missing. just before 3 in the afternoon, authorities notified the school they'd found the body of nate hawbaker. counselors were at the school today and will be available through next week as needed. in a statement to cbs 2 news, schneider says our thoughts and prayers go out to hawbaker family during this tragic time.

continues now with the latest information in a shooting at an arizona school. school.authorities now say today's shooting w w a murder suicide.the two 15-year-olds girls were killed by a single shot.police say there are no other suspects.they are now trying to figure out what sparked the shooting. cbs 2 news continues now with the latest on a machete attack in ohio. ohio.the f-b-i is now trying to figure out what sparked the attack.the agency says it isn't ruling out domestic terrorism.it happened last night at a middle eastern restaurant in columbus.mohamed barry attacked several people before leadinpolice on a high speed chase.ofofcers shot and killed him.the f-b-i is now looking into barry's background and travels. president obama is asking congress r billions of dollars to combat the growing zika viruruoutbreak. outbreak.but thth won't happen anytime soon.lawmakers have now left washington for the long president's day holiday.

solar cells to help detect cancer early and tonight all their work is paying off. >> karen, this morning the research team got their data back and found out their invention works. they found that solar cells could. assistant wenqi duan has spent hours making solar cells and a prototype from scratch that will be able to detect if a patient has cancer. "it's a waiting game and your praying and waiting to see if treatments work. anything to make it easier or cheaper or more e accessible in general to everyone who needs it."she uses this 3-d printer to make a prototype that'll hold the solar cell and blood sample.in another lab, she makes the solar cells. make a prototype that will hold

negative 20 to negative 30. these start in our northwestern counties at 6:00. they just went into effect about an hour ago at 9:00 and most of them expire tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow. the reason why these windchills are dangerous is because if you are outdoors for 30 minutes oo more, frostbite can occur. temperatures have been falling and they will be falling below zero as well. single digits across the board for eastern iowa and the winds are kicking so that equals a windchill well below zero as well. winds about 15 miles per r hour sustained right now. they will likely be sustained between 15th and 20 throughout the night. the cold spot right now, the frigid spot, oh line, 17 below.

so it is just down right cold and really cacabe dangerous to be outside for tonight. so you may just want to keep it indoors for the overnight hours and for tomorrow morning because even at 7:00 tomorrow morning windchills 18 below in cedar rapids, 29 below in charles city and it is not ideal to be outside at this time. so yououay just want to put off errands until later in the day. temps will be improving as well. but then i'm tracking a storm system that's on the way bringing likely chance for some snow on sunday. so we talked about those bitter wind chills already. we have the snow snow coming on sunday and a real warm up ahead. for tonight and for tomorrow, skies will stay clear, clouds

storm is developing. it hasn't matured just yet but we'll have a much better idea on what will occur here in eastern iowa but for now we know that snow is likely for much of the day on sunday. it starts to move in late saturday night and all this snow with this low pressure system will move through the area. if you have any plans for valentine's day it may not be great to get out on the roads. really just a steady snow continuing through the night and we could have some of this wrapping back around on sunday. so throughout much of the day on nday, roads could be slick due to the possibility of snow throughout the day. you can get updated road conditions at cbs 2 iowa.com. we have been n oking at the models and how much snow will fall.
