tractors couldn't plow the roads so men used shovels. 16 hundred men cleared the streets of des moines. as the snow piled higher and temperatures tanked, hardships began to mount. >> mail delivery stopped and farmers couldn't transport milk and eggs. coal was in short supply because rail lines were shut down. so schools and churches were closed and businesses shortened hours to conserve fuel. there were 10 to 5 foot drifts common. plows were no match. farmers struggled to feed and water livestock.

at its worst, ice on the river was 42 inches thick. spring came and iowans smiled knowing they had endured. little did they know, the summer of 1936 would be just as memorable and extreme as iowa's worst winter. >> 16 hundred people having to shovel out downtown des moines. >> that's a bunch of people. >> hard work in very difficult conditions t. there e re 15 straight days were lows were below 0. when that broke, everybody was thrilled. that july, we had 11 straight ys with highs over 1 hundred degrees. that turned out to be the hottest summer on recor in iowa. that was the worst year.

atures warmed up winds are blowing around eastern iowa tonight, but they're pulling in warmer air. we'll enjoy that. temperatures will be way above seasonal norms around here. you can see tonigig, there's a few clouds come across the care. -- area. now they're starting to break up. that's going to make a big difference on the temperatures. we'll have 50s and maybe 60 degrees across easasrn iowa. some parts up to 70. so the warmth has entered iowa

i do expect the warmth to be accompanied by very strong winds. 40 or maybe 50 miles an hour. out. but once the winds are gone, we'll still be in the 50s on saturday. that should be the bestay of the weekend. tonight's temperatures are still in the upper 30s to low 40s. and this is about as low as we're going to go. after midnight tonight, temperatures should start to slowly rise and many of us could be close to 50 tomorrow morning. temperatures in the south were up into the 80s and 90s this afternoon. that's the mild air we'll have this weekend. the starm track will work its way in from the south.
